Out of curiosity, I wanted to see how important return men were to the past 5 SB winners.

2005 Steelers used their #3 WR for PRs and a specialized returner for KRs.
Results? PR guy got 2 TDs and a 10+ average. KR guy got a 25+ average.

2006 Colts had a specialist for both KRs and PRs. That's all he did. He didn't have a single rush nor reception. Results? 1 PR TD and a 9.2 average and a 24+ average KR.

2007 Giants had a specialist for KRs and their #3 RB for their PRs. Note that their RB depth was so deep that they let us get Ryan Grant that year. Results - No TDs in either and 24+ average KR, 7+ average PR.

2008 Steelers used their #2 WR for PRs and split the duties between five guys for KRs. Results? No TDs, mediocre averages for both.

2009 Saints used Reggie Bush for their PR duties and he got 4+ yards average and no TDs. They used a specialist for KR duties and he got 1 TD and a whopping 27.5 average.

Summary - Would be nice to have a specialist. We don't. So we have to do what we have to do to get some results.

I was hoping Blackmon would be our returner for both. If I remember correctly, he's on IR right now.

I'm fine with Williams and Nelson as our returners although I'd prefer to see Shields IF he learned to hold on to the ball. The thing is, he hasn't yet. He's a burner.

But Blackmon is a better PR than Jordy.

KRs:
Jordy in '08 had an 18.9 average and no TDs.
in '09 he had a 25.4 average and no TDs.

Note that I don't include TDs brought back by penalties. That's like saying "we would have won if so and so didn't drop that INT." No could have would haves in football.

Blackmon in '08 had a 21.0 average and 23.3 average in '09. No TDs either year.

You are correct. Jordy is slightly better. I forgot that Blackmon's 3 return TDs all came on PRs.

So I'll correct what I said and will say "it would be nice to have Blackmon as our PR guy and Jordy as our KR guy."

I am Mikey... and I don't like this at all.

How can we not have identified a 5th WR or a 5th or 6th corner that has enough return skills to warrant a roster spot.. especially when special teams was an emphasis this offseason.

Now we are offering up our front line players that aren't proven exceptional returners themselves?

It is a risk.. one that seems a bit pathetic on the surface.. and they can blow smoke all they want.. a week ago they were desperately hoping Chery would become that guy.

Seriously.. we can't find a better option on the market?

Did McCarthy learn nothing from the Woodson experiement in '07 where he got banged up and missed the game against the Cowboys?

"RainX" wrote:

Woodson missed that game because of a toe injury that he was fighting all season. Did he injure the toe while returning a punt? I don't remember.

Anyway, I'm surprised how many people think it would be fine to have our punt returner make a fair catch every time. This move alone means that you would be giving up about 6-10 yards of field position every time the ball is exchanged on punts. Sure, we should have one of the best offenses in the league, but you can't afford to just give away yards like that.

A lot of people talk about the risk of having a starting player return punts, but nobody mentions the risk of giving up yardage by not putting your best returner back there and picking up yards that are there for the taking. Over the course of a game, it can add up, and there are a lot of close games in the NFL.
