I received and e-mail yesterday from the son of a friend of mine. I sincerely hope all of you don't end up like this, but please read on. This is one of my rare serious moments.
John and I knew each other from our teaching days back in Wisconsin. I am 9 years older than John, and we met during the second to last year I was in Wisconsin. John was the ultimate Dallas Cowboy fan. Everything in his life revolved around the Cowboys.....to the extent that it cost him his marriage and family.
His garage door was Dallas Blue and Silver with a Texas star on it.
His license plates said CwBys.
He constantly wore a Tom Landry Fedora hat.
They were "his" team, even though he didn't know Jerry Jones from George Bush.
He never saw a Cowboys game in person. In fact, had never been to Texas.
He had all the answers to the Cowboys recent woes. Get rid of this guy and that guy...etc.
John was watching the Cowboys-Texans game this past Saturday evening with his son, who had come over just to talk with him and see how he was doing.
The Texans scored a TD and went up pretty big. John stood up, muttered
"Oh Shit", and fell on the floor.
He was dead before he hit the floor.
John's life revolved around the Cowboys, to the extent it killed him. I'm not saying it was the Cowboys themselves, but folks, sometimes we take "our" teams and sports way too seriously. He had high blood pressure way back when, and would get so worked up over a Cowboys lose that he would get migraines and miss work. Every conversation with him turned to Cowboy stuff. I am a Packer fan through and through, but long ago I learned that this is just a game....even though it is a business.....and life goes on even if your team loses this week.
Sit back and take a moment to reflect. We can be diehard fans, but out there is something far more important than the wins and losses that the Packers, or any other team for that matter, has in a season.
It's life and love and living. We only go around once....enjoy it, treasure it, and don't become so obsessed that your last words on earth are "oh shit", like John.
May he rest in peace.
Bob
