Can Rodgers make great receivers?

I was amazed by Rodgers level of play this weekend and it got me thinking. When Rodgers took over the roll as starter he inherited a great set of receivers. He has proven himself as a talented QB since.

One of the things that make a great QB is the ability to bring out the talents of his wide receivers. Sorry to bring up the comparison, but I was always amazed at how Favre could do this throughout his career. The Vikings WR corps looked much better than expected partially due to Favre's help last year. As we draft new WR talent, I will be really interested to see how quickly Rodgers can influence and lead new receivers as they join the Green and Gold. I have no doubt that he is up to the challenge.

I definitely think he can. The 2 that he has had the chance to develop from the beginning are Jones and Nelson, also Finley but he's a beast anyway.

He's been a big part of Jennings, too, but he is a great receiver and knows how to get open.

I think that when a QB 'makes a receiver great,' that does not mean that the same receiver can go to any QB and still be great. If the same receiver goes to a crappy QB, then we truly see what kind of a receiver he is, whether he is great or his old QB made him so. This being said, the fact that our wideouts do so well makes me think that it has a lot-- no a TON, to do with the QB. Not only does he have to have the talent to put the ball in the right place, he also has to be the leader of the team. ARod takes the offensive line out to eat and such. The guy is a fantastic teammate. Another piece of evidence is the fact that he has about 6-8 different receivers each game. The guy can get the ball to ANY eligible receiver. I do believe that we have talented receivers, obviously, but a receiver is only as good as the guy starting the play.

Yeah, Rodgers has that ability to throw very accurately with perfect timing. I think he really studies his receivers too and knows their talents. That sideline throw to James Jones, for example, was thrown in exactly the place that allowed Jones to use his best talent, which is to snatch a ball out of the air when it is thrown over his head. Rodgers has a similar chemistry with Jennings and Driver.

What are some examples of receivers who did great with one QB and weren't the same with another? The best example I can think of is Alvin Harper, who was a great deep threat for the Cowboys with Michael Irvin on the other side and Troy Aikman throwing the ball, then he went to the Redskins as a free agent and he was nothing. Bill Schroeder put up some good numbers in Green Bay, with Favre at QB, then did nothing in Detroit, although I never thought Schroeder was very good to begin with. He was a #3 receiver who was a #2 by default for a couple of years.

The two examples that come to me off the top of my head where javon walker in denver and randy moss in oakland.

The receivers have to get open and the QB has to recognize that and deliver the ball. The receivers have to be able to catch that ball. Without each other, the are not going do well on an individual basis. Fin, Jennings, Driver, Jones and Nelson are good at getting open, catching the ball, taking hits, making moves after the catch etc. Rodgers is good at reading the D, recognizing what the receivers and the D are going to do and getting the ball to a point where the receiver will be the only one who can catch it. If he screws up the receivers have shown the ability to take it back or knock it down. I think that the two are inseparable. QBs need the team to allow them to be great, the QB has to step up and deliver.

A QB cannot get make a WR hang onto the ball, can't get them YACs, can't make them get tough, one handed catches with DBs draped all over them. Conversely a WR can't make the throw be there, one time an catchable.

A WR can make a QB better and a QB can make his WRs better. To be Great, they both need to work together to make each other better.

If you have 5 talented receivers and a talented QB. Take out one reciever and the Unit should compensate. Replace them all, like taking a well performing QB out of NE and moving to say, KC and if there is no talent to throw too, the QB will appear to suck. Take a poor performing QB from tampa and put him on a championship team in SF and he becomes the greatest QB ever. (Hyperbole)

Moss and Walker have been mentioned as examples for WR. I would also add TO in Buffalo.

Neither can perform alone. The Receiving corps needs something to catch and the QB needs some one to throw to. Which is more important on a bicycle, the front wheel or the back? It is only the synergy of the two that makes crashing into mailboxes on AFV possible.

Dexter hit the nail on the head.
If you don't have a decent QB that can get the ball to the WR's, it doesn't matter how good the WR is. If you have both a good WR and good QB, they both will flourish.

I think a great QB can make a so-so WR look better.
But a great WR won't make a so-so QB look better, if said QB can't get the ball to him.
