Hadn't heard anything on here for a while. Friend at the scrimmage thought Bryan looked pretty good. Kinda pulling for him myself after watching a few videos. Anyone else have any thoughts?

I'm pulling for the Aussie as well.
He can do some crazy things with a football that I would like to see translate into an improved punting game if he can be consistant with distance and hang time.

No prizes as to guessing who I'm going for.

I'd love to see Bryan win it out, but only of course if he deserves it.

Neither is really pulling away. They're both getting about the same hangtime and distance. Both are somewhat inconsistent, as well.

I'm pulling for the lefty.

Two reasons I like the Aussie.

1. He may not have as strong a leg as Masthay, but his leg still looked better than what we have seen in years. But what I like more is he is a far better directional kicker.

2. I like that he is a lefty and the ball is spinning a different direction which will make it tougher for the returners to catch cleanly, I think that can't be understated.

I like the Aussie as well.

I bet it's Masthay that wins the job, though.

Not enough time in American football, the American is supposedly a better holder, and our organization sucks at picking the better of the two. semi-lol

I remember that lefty thing with B.J. Sander. He punted for the Packers for a full year, but I can't recall ever seeing a returner mishandling one of his kicks, and I was watching for it.

Like most people, I'm more intrigued by Bryan. Both have been okay in practice, but we won't know what we have until they punt in game situations, and sadly, we won't REALLY know until one of them has an entire regular season under his belt, cold weather and all. Typically the distance of the kicks gets shorter and shorter as the pressure increases.

I think this race for the punting job is seriously tied or extremely close to it.

Usually when coaches say two players are tied (like MM said with these 2 punters) I think BS, they're just trying to avoid answering the question for now. But in this case I think it's seriously turn.

Masthay has a slight edge in distances, hang time and holding but Bryan isn't bad at any of those and isn't far behind.

Bryan has a slight edge in the control and get off time but Masthay isn't bad at any of those and isn't far behind.

The only place I've seen a real edge of one over the other is kickoff where Masthay has shown he could take over kickoffs with out a problem if needed to. But that's the kickers job not the punters but still Masthay is showing his versatility which may give him the overall edge.

Bryan of course has the better story, but I'm not sure that will factor in other than fan support.

I'm rooting for Bryan being from Australia... it would be awesome to have an Aussie on the team.

I think Masthay will win out though.

I'm pulling for Bryan too but Masthay kicked better during the preseason game. There's still time though!

I am thinking an over the hill hillbilly from Wisconsin with a robotic leg should get a look first before making the choice.. heard he likes to knock people around as well.. lol.

Seriously though.. I thought the Aussie through week one looked better.. 3 more to go.. and then probably neither.. as the last day they will take a flyer on someone they haven't worked out. 😉

Garry Don "Donny" Anderson (born May 16, 1943, in Borger, Texas) is a former professional American football player who played nine years in the National Football League. A halfback and punter from Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University), Anderson was the first round draft pick of the Green Bay Packers in the 1965 NFL Draft, the seventh overall selection in the draft that included future hall-of-famers Dick Butkus, Gale Sayers, Joe Namath and Fred Biletnikoff.
During his time at Texas Tech, Donny Anderson earned the nickname the "Golden Palomino". Anderson received All-American honors twice in 1964 and 1965 and was a three-time all-Southwest Conference halfback 1963-65. Anderson held many of Texas Tech's football records as his legendary career ended with the 1965 season. He finished fourth in the 1965 Heisman Trophy race. Anderson is part of the Texas Tech Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.
Anderson began his career a year later in 1966, as #44 for the Packers. Anderson was drafted in the 1st Round as the 7th Pick for $600,000, the highest in NFL history to that date.
In 1972 he moved to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he played his final three seasons.
While with the Packers, Anderson originated the concept of hang time in punting. Until Anderson, punters typically strived for maximum distance, with the NFL's leaders usually averaging 45 or more yards a punt. Punt returns varied, with an average of perhaps 5 yards per return. In 1967, Anderson worked instead at punting the ball higher, shortening the distance traveled but increasing the ball's time in the air, allowing better coverage by his team on the punt return. Green Bay punted 66 times that year, 63 of them by Anderson; opponents were able to return only 13 of them, for a total of 22 yards or about 1/3 yard per punt. It was Anderson's coach, Vince Lombardi, who explained the concept to sportswriters who questioned why Lombardi didn't try to find a better punter than Anderson, who averaged only 36.6 yards per punt that year. Lombardi pointed out the lack of return yardage. Other punters soon followed Anderson, working for greater hang time. Eventually the NFL changed its rules governing punt coverage, to restore the ability to return punts.
Anderson graduated in 1961 from Stinnett High School, located in Stinnett, the seat of Hutchinson County.

I want Bryan.
I think he had a better net average then the other guy.
Plus, as was said, he's a good directional kicker.

I remember reading somewhere that Bryan could put different "spins" on the ball because of his time in the Aussie league. One of which makes the ball bounce forward instead of rolling into the end zone. However, I don't know if this is true.

EDIT

Bryan can hit an end-over-end punt that will hit the ground without taking a big forward bounce, which is ideal for punting inside the 20-yard line.

Yeah, that's how Australian Rules players kick the ball. A lot more accurate (if kicked right the ball will usually bounce either forward or backwards rather then to the side).
