Trippster, he was referring to the tune, which IS bad (it's nigh unsingable), not the lyrics, which some have criticized as needlessly complex.

The tune has nothing to do with the lyrics. It's not even an American tune.

For the record, I love the German national anthem. Not only is the tune stirring, the lyrics are delightfully earthy and patriarchal (some would say sexist). It actually expresses sentiments almost anyone can relate to, whereas our national anthem just tells a dramatized story of a single incident in our nation's history.
