Color me as someone that hopes that Wells is challenged greatly this camp.. and if that means they play Bulaga at guard this season because he is too talented not to play.. great that leaves more competition to challenge Wells inside.

It is not that I don't like Wells or that I don't think he can play the position, rather that I think he is a guy that doesn't get a great push when he plays more physical interior tackles.. I want a mauler type anchoring the center of this line.. but we are fine with Wells.. but could stand improvement.. A Spitz/Lang/Newhouse/Smith would be nice to step in and push Wells as a more physical option.

I completely agree. I actually brought something like this up before. I feel like GB is content with Wells because he's an average assignment sound player. I rather see Spitz in there because I feel like he's a nastier player. He's more more physical and to me that's what GB needs more. Don't let the average get in way of the good. That's how I look at it.

First depth chart releases are mostly for motivation by the coaches.. pushing the underachieving in camp by sending a message.

Additionally.. by burying a young player on the depth charts, I believe teams hope that they can pass guys through waivers a bit easier.

Now on the TE situation overall for this team.. I think this might be a season, with the ability of Finley alone that the Packers carry one less receiver on the 53 and carry 4 TE's with protecting Quarless yet retaining Havner ... some of that will be very dependent upon Shield, Porter or Starks stepping up in the return game giving the Pack options past Blackmon and Williams as a return man.

"pack93z" wrote:

I was thinking that too, i could easily see only 4 WRs and 4 TEs, cause honestly, if one of the top 4 WRs go down we're going more to our TE's, not our 5th WR. Stash a WR on the PS and you're set.

I'm not saying to cut Wells, but you start the better player, which is Spitz IMO. If he can't go, you have Wells to fall back on. Spitz has been here long enough that a poor camp doesn't make me worry. But saying an offensive lineman is having a poor camp is a stretch. You can't judge these guys until the pads start making noise, which can only be done in games.

I still don''t understand the love affair people have with Spitz. He's shown a bit more than Colledge and a lot more than the other OL guy GB drafted that year, but has he really done enough in his career that another poor camp doesn't cause people to worry?

Not bashing you in particular, porky, since my sense is that you generally know far more about this sort of thing than I do, but I just don't understand the attraction of Spitz.

Has he really shown more than that he is a serviceable journeyman at this point?

I think he's shown more than Colledge. Actually, after watching games from last year, I think the coaches' patience is running out. I like Spitz more than Colledge or Wells because I see a nasty streak in him and he finishes his blocks better.

I also think he's better built than Scott Wells, who again is going to get handled by some of the better tackles. My memory might be fuzzy, but I recall Jay Ratliff taking care of Wells pretty well. I worry about matchups like that. I think Spitz can handle himself better in those situations. Don't get me wrong, he needs to develop particularly as a pass blocker, but I see the potential for him to be good. I think Wells has maxed out as a player.

Trade Spitz and Wells plus a pick for Nick Mangold and pay the guy. That will solve our problem ;)

This will never happen though.

Barbre at LT. . . now that'a the scariest thing I've heard in decades!!!!

"Wade" wrote:

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Barbre at LT should never be attempted or even mentioned--not even as a joke. Makes me wonder about our coaches.

"Greg C." wrote:

Maybe they're trying to con Al Davis or similar out of a high draft choice:

Packer brain trust: "This is the time when other teams are looking at us to improve their roster. If we play Barbre as if he's our step-in for LT, some schmo elsewhere will say "wow, gotta have him."

Two days later:

Al Davis: "Hey, Cable, quit complaining. I picked up our new LT. Name's Barbre. Got a real Raider attitude. Only cost me a 2nd."

I like it!

Seriously, though, I wonder if this is the beginning of the end for Barbre as a Packer. Coming into training camp, I thought his best chance to make the team was at guard. We all saw how awkward he was protecting the edge on pass plays, but he can get after people on running plays. The sportswriters are always saying how "athletic" he is, so I thought maybe he had a chance to be like another "athletic" lineman we once had--Mike Wahle, who was a disaster at left tackle in 1999 but was then switched to guard and gave us five very good years at that position.

But with Bulaga now thrown into the mix at guard, I just don't see a spot for Barbre on the roster. It's hard to believe that the coaches think there is much of a chance for Barbre to do well at left tackle.

And what I'm saying is that Spitz hasn't proven that he can get back to where he used to be as of yet after coming off a serious injury. He may or may not ever get back to 100% of what he was, but right now it sounds like he's still pretty far from it.

beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.

beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
