Maybe they're trying to con Al Davis or similar out of a high draft choice:

Packer brain trust: "This is the time when other teams are looking at us to improve their roster. If we play Barbre as if he's our step-in for LT, some schmo elsewhere will say "wow, gotta have him."

Two days later:

Al Davis: "Hey, Cable, quit complaining. I picked up our new LT. Name's Barbre. Got a real Raider attitude. Only cost me a 2nd."

I'm not sure Barbre or Newhouse will be able to make this roster with out injuries or trades.

Barbre might be able to if he's better than Breno and Breno get's cut....

The back-up at LT will be Bulaga, Colledge or Lang.

I believe many are missing the point.

On the 45 player game day roster allows for 2 or 3 substitutes. If there are needs elsewhere there may be only 2 active replacements.

Bulaga has to be able to play multiple positions if he expects to be on the game day roster. He has to get some experience at LG. Additionally the experience at LG will also help him understand what his teammates duties are when he is a LT.

He will be a better player in the long run because of this experience. It also gives him an extra challenge to keep him from becoming complacent.

It also works on the psychology of Clifton respecting him as the veteran starter and the psychology of Colledge giving him another competitor.

It is all for the good.

The starting offensive line is the same as it has been LT Chad Clifton, LG Daryn Colledge, C Scott Wells, RG Josh Sitton and RT Mark Tauscher. It gets a little interesting after that. Bryan Bulaga is the backup at LT and LG. Rookie Marshall Newhouse is the No. 3 LT. Allen Barbre only appears as the No. 3 LG, which shows that his future isnt bright here. Jason Spitz is the backup center, T.J. Lang is the backup RG, and Breno Giacomini is the backup RT ahead of Chris Campbell.

Also very interesting, probaby better for the other thread:

Brandon Chillar isnt even listed at ILB anymore; hes the starting ROLB.

I think it's interesting that Andrew Quarless is listed not as the third TE but as the fifth, behind Tom Crabtree. I wonder if that means he'll have a hard time making roster or if they just haven't seen enough of him yet to move him up the depth chart.

EDIT: In his video, Bedard is rather critical of Quarless (saying he shows "laziness" and is dropping passes he should catch), while he says that Crabtree is "well on his way to making this team." Interesting that a player we've heard virtually nothing about may well be one of our TEs this year. Dude's huge.

One thing is for sure, a lot of the players the Packers cut will make other rosters. Just at TE, Finley is an obvious lock. Lee is doing his darnedest to hang on, Havner may be too good to be cut, and Crabtree looks like a real talent. That's 4 already, then Quarless, too? 5TEs?? Then at RB, there's a log jam after Grant and Jackson (and I think Jackson is poised to have a break out year). Even the 5th WR will be a tough call, I'd say Swain has the inside track, but that's no given, either. If part of the roster cuts comes down to keeping Havner or 3 FBs, I say keep Havner ahead of Hall. Heck, Havner might make a great FB, he's got better hands than Hall and Johnson, maybe even better than Kuhn and is probably faster.

First depth chart releases are mostly for motivation by the coaches.. pushing the underachieving in camp by sending a message.

Additionally.. by burying a young player on the depth charts, I believe teams hope that they can pass guys through waivers a bit easier.

Now on the TE situation overall for this team.. I think this might be a season, with the ability of Finley alone that the Packers carry one less receiver on the 53 and carry 4 TE's with protecting Quarless yet retaining Havner ... some of that will be very dependent upon Shield, Porter or Starks stepping up in the return game giving the Pack options past Blackmon and Williams as a return man.

Bulaga gets a shot at left guard
By Greg A. Bedard of the Journal Sentinel
Aug. 9, 2010

Green Bay - After changing things up on defense last week by moving Brandon Chillar to right outside linebacker and Clay Matthews to the left, the Packers through some intrigue into the offense when first-round pick Bryan Bulaga got his first reps at left guard on Monday.

"We just felt to this point he's earned an opportunity to compete for a starting position," coach Mike McCarthy said. "Our intent throughout the spring and going into training camp was to work him exclusively at left tackle. Have been very impressed with his body of work to this point and we're going to give him an opportunity to compete with Daryn Colledge and Allen Barbre at the left guard position."

McCarthy said he began to think about the move during the middle of last week, talked about it with line coaches James Campen and Jerry Fontenot on Friday and Sunday night.

"Its a testament to Bryan," McCarthy said. "Bryan has come in here, I mean, hes talented, hes tough, hes doing things the right way. Hes got a lot of football in front of him. Hes got a lot to learn. We feel from an offensive line depth standpoint, this is the deepest group that weve had in our time here, and were continuing to try to train the younger players at one position, which is tough, not really realistic, because you start looking at that depth chart and youre trying to get some clarity to it, and we feel by making this move it may add some clarity to it. Once again, not to be redundant, he has earned this right. Hes been impressive. I like what Ive seen from the individual drills through the group drills all the way through the team drills, and I saw it again Saturday night. So were going to give him a shot."

Bulaga, who will likely be back at left tackle on Tuesday morning when Chad Clifton gets the practice off, said he's ready.

"I'm excited about it," Bulaga said. "I don't know who wouldn't be excited about getting in there and having this opportunity so I'm excited about it and try to take advantage of it."

Colledge said he didn't take Bulaga's move as a slight to him.

"I just think they want to get the best five on the field and they're giving him an opportunity to show off he can play both positions," Colledge said. "Obviously he's proved he can play a little bit of left tackle and he can play a little bit of left guard I think it makes him even more valuable to the Packers.

"I thought I played well, thought I had a good week. I had my up and down days but I think for the most part it's been an aggressive climb uphill. Feel positive. Had a good scrimmage, I graded out well and I'm hearing positive things from the coaches."

I honestly like this move a lot because I am all about fielding the best players.
At the moment, Bulaga will obviously be the best back-up at left tackle and guard. The kid has been outstanding during camp and deserves a shot at another position.
Personally, I'd rather see him take the field at left guard than Colledge. Problem is we don't know what we will get from Bulaga come actual gametime experience. If I had to put money on it, I think he would be a better starter than Colledge.
Bulaga practicing at left guard makes sense.
