The whole notion of "musical chairs" on the offensive line has never set well with me. It always seemed like an excuse by the coaches to cover up the fact that we just didn't have very many talented players on the o-line and the fans bought into it. Maybe the reason Colledge is so inconsistent isn't because he's switched positions a lot but because he just isn't very good. In fact, Colledge seems to be the only player who suffers from being moved around. Spitz plays consistently despite the fact that he's constantly shuffled around. Lang played LG, LT and RT last year and I didn't hear anyone complaining.

If Bulaga is as talented and smart as he's supposed to be then playing him at LG isn't going to hurt his development. If he's as talented and smart as he's supposed to be then he needs be starting somewhere on the line.

Good post. Don't agree with the love for Spitz, but the rest is spot on. +1.

If Colledge had been playing the way we should want a LG to play, Bulaga wouldn't have "earned" the switch.

Count me among the few who like the move. I said back in April when this "we're working Bulaga exclusively at LT" that it only made sense if Colledge or Spitz decisively took OG job. If your only reason for keeping one of your best 5 OL on the bench is because you expect one of the other 5 to go down to injury sometime in the future, your plans (and your roster) are skewed.

McCarthy may indeed be working Bulaga at RG because "he's been impressive." But he's also doing it because he's been at least as impressive, if not more impressive, than the alternatives at OG.

Conditional: If Bulaga has to switch to LT because of a Clifton injury, and has split his reps between guard and tackle, that might mean a weakness on the line.

Certain: When Colledge proves his usual inconsistent/sometimes-servicable-and-sometimes-not self, that will mean a weakness on the line.

IMO the only reason not to switch some, or even all, of Bulaga's reps to guard is if you think he has a shot at beating out Clifton for the starting spot early in the season.

I completely agree that whoever will protect him the best is who we should have on the firled. BUT I do thin kthat we need to figure that out early on so we can keep those guys on the field in the same position. As a past Tackle myself, I know that when you have different people playing next to you, you have to know EXACTLY what they are going to do and what they are capable of. And this was in high school. Professional football is exactly that, it is extremely precise, and we need to give these guys reps in the position that they will remain.

Good comments fella's.

I'd rather Bulaga be LT because we have someone emerge with excellence at the LG position. That seems to be unlikely, so whatever makes it easier for us to win this up coming Super Bowl, I'm in favor for.

Way to put yourself out there Kevin. Bulaga is not playing LT this year, or next as long as Clifton is around. He's too good to sit on the bench. A lot of us hate Colledge, seems like a win win.

Since Giacomini finally is able to tie his shoes, Lang should be moved to backup LT, Colledge traded, and Spitz can backup both guard positions. With Bulaga at LG, that's the biggest line we have fielded, maybe ever.

I agree. Bulaga will progress much quicker being on the field than sitting behind Clifton as insurance. I think they feel they know what Colledge gives them and if he continues to be up and down they want the best viable alternative to move the OL in a positive direction. More than like they see Bulaga as that guy and are not about to waste him.

This doesn't surprise me. There was a lot of talk about Bulaga PROBABLY becoming a solid LT but ABSOLUTELY being an awesome NFL Guard. Until he's needed over there on the outside let him play.

If Bulaga is one of the 5 best linemen fine.

Otherwise, I don't like it. I would get Bulaga as many reps at LT as possible, at practice, in the preseason, and when the game is in hand during regular season. Keep Cliffy as healthy and fresh as possible and have Bulaga as ready as possible if Cliffy does get dinged, which based on history will most likey happen.

Color me as someone that hopes that Wells is challenged greatly this camp.. and if that means they play Bulaga at guard this season because he is too talented not to play.. great that leaves more competition to challenge Wells inside.

It is not that I don't like Wells or that I don't think he can play the position, rather that I think he is a guy that doesn't get a great push when he plays more physical interior tackles.. I want a mauler type anchoring the center of this line.. but we are fine with Wells.. but could stand improvement.. A Spitz/Lang/Newhouse/Smith would be nice to step in and push Wells as a more physical option.

IMO.. Colledge's career as a Packers should be concluded this camp.. too talented not to move for something.. but too inconsistent to be counted on as a major cog of this unit. Maybe another coach, you know an NFL caliber offensive line coach, can get some consistency from him. Seattle/Gibbs needs some athletic lineman.. swing a deal with them maybe.

Now back to Bulaga.. talented well coached kid in college.. so I have confidence in his ability not to be spoiled by the move.. albeit I would be a ton more confident if we would have replaced our line coaches here in Green Bay prior to this season.

Bulaga's still playing LG, even with Clifton out. Barbre's taking snaps at LT with Newhouse playing 2nd team LT.

All I can say is that playing time at a sub-optimal position for a player is better than no playing time at their optimal position. You don't get better not being on the field. If Bulaga earns a spot to start other than LT, than great, put the best 5 out there no matter what their optimal position is.
