Why not Lang at LG which Mike McCarthy said was his best position on the line? I also don't understand why year after year we play musical chairs on OL after camp starts...never works.

I'm not a fan of shifting O-linemen around either. I was happy when they said Bulaga would just play left tackle. I hope Porky is right and that Bulaga can handle this. I do think that this is probably being done because of Bulaga playing well in camp rather than Colledge playing poorly. I haven't heard of any decline in Colledge's play. He has been inconsistent throughout his career, though, so if Bulaga can beat him out and play consistently this season, so much the better.

Kirk Ferentz.

Bulaga is ready to play now because he played under one of the two best coaches in college football. The other being Nick Saban. Ferentz prepares his guys for the NFL. They can handle the shuffling around.

It's apples and oranges with Colledge. Colledge doesn't have the physicality to play tackle. He never did, so moving him around hurt. I also think Colledge has a difficult time playing against stronger opponents. He always loses the leverage battle and ends up on his back. I'm not sure if that's because he lacks strength or if it's a technique problem, but something is wrong there. Yes, Bulaga needs to get a little nastier, but he has the technique to play inside or outside. He knows how to play LT. His biggest thing will be to overcome the mental aspect of the game and his short arms. You also have to remember that Bulaga played at Iowa, which is a pro system. Boise State is where Colledge came out of and that's not a pro system. The learning curve was more difficult for Colledge.

Now don't get me wrong because of course, Bulaga will struggle against Jared Allen, but everyone does. He's the best front four rusher in football. But as far as being able to handle playing inside and then kicking him outside if necessary, I think he's good to go. We'll see though. I still like the idea of Lang there as well and as someone mentioned, that's a possibility.

The whole notion of "musical chairs" on the offensive line has never set well with me. It always seemed like an excuse by the coaches to cover up the fact that we just didn't have very many talented players on the o-line and the fans bought into it. Maybe the reason Colledge is so inconsistent isn't because he's switched positions a lot but because he just isn't very good. In fact, Colledge seems to be the only player who suffers from being moved around. Spitz plays consistently despite the fact that he's constantly shuffled around. Lang played LG, LT and RT last year and I didn't hear anyone complaining.

If Bulaga is as talented and smart as he's supposed to be then playing him at LG isn't going to hurt his development. If he's as talented and smart as he's supposed to be then he needs be starting somewhere on the line.

This. Maybe he (MM) is just trying to push Colledge to work for his spot. If he thinks that he is in the hot seat maybe he will play a little better. I'm always in favor a competition that makes players work harder.

+1 to Porky.

The Packers simply can't afford to not put their best players on the field this season when they have a team in their prime and high expectations to win the Super Bowl.

And I'm tired of all the shuffling... I think it's hurt Colledge, Barbre, Spitz, Moll and all of the others...

"beast" wrote:

Colledge yes

Barbre... publicly admitted he abandoned his teqnique <sp?> in games

Spitz hurt his back and Sitton took his place, since he is unable to reclaim the RG spot hes just been moved around, unable to unseat the starters.

Good point. Note how Josh Sitton took over the right guard spot. He would not be denied, and now that position is his to keep. We need more O-linemen who can do that. Wells and Colledge have had shaky holds on their starting positions these past few years, and Barbe failed utterly when given the chance to start at right tackle.
