World Sauna Championships Finalist Vladimir Ladyzhensky DIES At Event

A Russian finalist at the World Sauna Championships in Finland died Saturday and the event was suspended, according to the organizers, the AP reported.

Both of the events finalists -- Russia's Vladimir Ladyzhensky and Finland's Timo Kaukonen -- were rushed to the hospital after collapsing during the competition, in which contestants are made to endure temperatures of 230 degrees Fahrenheit (110 degrees Celsius) for as long as they can. Ladyzhensky later died.

The event, which has been held since 1999, was taking place in Heinola, Finland, which is 86 miles north of Helsinki.

While police have launched an investigation, the organizer of the event, Ossi Arvela, said in a statement: "All the rules were followed and there was enough first aid personnel. All the competitors needed to sign in to the competition with a doctor's certificate."

The Finnish news agency STT reported that both men suffered burns on their body and that the competition was cut short after six minutes, according to AFP.

Kaukonen had won the competition 5 times.

How could anything possibly go wrong here? I bet that half the contestants enter the wallpaper paste eating contest, as well.

They endured temperatures of 110 degrees Celsius? Incredible. Considering 60-degree water can cause third-degree burns in as little as 5 seconds (according to the American Red Cross), 110-degree temperatures are nothing short of mind boggling. I wonder what the proximate cause of the burns was, though: were they throwing water on the rocks? were the contestants leaning against the walls of the saunas? I don't think the superheated air alone should have caused the burns.

Old news. The winner, the finnish guy is still hospitalized too. Yup, the finns are the world's greatest saunamen. With a lifelong tradition of going to the sauna a couple of times a week, I don't see how a 110-degree sauna is too mind boggling. I mean, too hot for me, but if you train for it, I don't see how that's impossible.

That's why I'm wondering what went wrong. The thermal energy in the air shouldn't have been enough to cause such injury.

The shit that people will find to create a competition.

Speaking of doo-doo, if they can have "World Sauna Championships", they can have anything...

I am going to start a "World stew in a vat of human excrement while servicing your boss" league.

I will not be competing, but will get a good case of beer or two and write the rules and code of conduct for the new league.

Off the top of my head, I have already decided the appropriate venue for the world championship tournament.

Minneapolis.

But dfosterf, you do know that sauna is extremely relaxing if the heat is right.

Oh, I'm with you on that--- I would definitely have a tough decision on my hands if given the option of competing in the World Sauna Championships in Finland vs. watching the World stew in a vat of excrement while servicing your boss championships in Minneapolis...especially if I'm league commish making the rules.

There is just so much to work with as regards my proposal.

For example, I can easily see the human wave rolling through the metrodump while the chant goes up....

(PA system anoounces)

"Brad Childress is your next competitor, with Brett Favre as anchorman!"

"YOU SUCK!!"

They seem so uniquely qualified to -

"host" the event, lol They will be "packing 'em in" in Minnesota

(Man, there's a lot to work with, here :tongue3: )

beast (8-Jan) : Though if they're legitimately trying to re-sign MM, then it makes sense.
beast (8-Jan) : Jerry Jones still hasn't put Jimmy Johnson in the Ring of Honor, but he's in the NFL's Hall of Fame, Jones is petty
Mucky Tundra (8-Jan) : Unless the Cowboys are planning an extension, seems kinda petty
