How hard is it to be a holder?

Honestly I don't know... I'm thinking not that hard, but I wasn't a holder so I don't know... what do other think?

Is it really that hard?

I agree there needs to be a good holder but is it that hard to find a good one?

Maybe it's a lot harder than I think...

This is from limited experience kicking and holding over 10 years ago.

As a holder, if your kicker wants it tilted back and towards the kicker, it can be tricky. If the kicker simple wants it north/south, that's not too hard. the reason the tilt can be difficult is if you're on a slippery surface. The ball, as you know, is oddly shaped so trying to quickly place the ball down and adjust and hold in 1.2 seconds is sometimes not good. And if the snap is shaky or you do not have soft hands, that also makes it hard.

Also, most kickers like the 'LACES OUT LACES OUT!'. So, you have to spin the ball after you have it placed, then tilt or what have you.

There's surely more to it than what I remember, but that's what I recall.

I'd rather kick than hold. I think kicking is less stressful than holding.

Thanks for the info... I've kicked a bit but I haven't hold... I wanted it straight up (and the coach wanted me to not kick the starting QB (the holder) :thumbleft:

I did hit his finger hard once but he was fine.

Crosby is nowhere near as fussy about the hold as Longwell was.

Longwell once blamed the holder for putting the ball on a yard line and the painted surface was more slippery than grass.

Longwell always blamed the holder and was always making noises about the holder he liked not getting cut.

Crosby doesn't whine and that is getting rarer among kickers.

A bit more confidence and he will be fine.

However, if the offense wants to get into field goal range look for the play to go left and line it up from the left hash mark.

I'm more concerned about the punting game. And if McCarthey wouldn't swallow his playbook and keep putting Mason in bad situations, his average would be better. We'll live through Mason's troubles just like Ahman Green's fumbles and all of Cock'n'Crocs interceptions and for the same reason: they have talent. Mason has a very strong leg.

All true, but the fact remains that Longwell was and is one of the best kickers in the NFL, while Crosby is below average. With the game on the line, I have zero confidence in him.

Because it's likely that Crosby will end up as Ms. Crosby, become a detective and kidnap Rodgers.
