If he pushes it too hard I imagine the risk of another injury increases significantly. However, if they slowly work him back in while he gets his feet under him, he could very well stay healthy for a period of time.

It's a very tough decision. If you baby him the problem could rear it's ugly head during the season or he could keep healing and strengthening his back and contribute the wholed season. If you push him, you could find out now if his back holds up or you may again injure him unnecessarily or cause a problem that does not show up until after the season starts. My inclination would be to start him slow, get him in shape, and then play him a good amount during the preseason.
