Green Bay Packers place-kicker Mason Crosby missed two more field goals Monday, sinking his training camp accuracy rate to an abysmal 6-for-11.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy was quick to defend his kicker following practice. Im not concerned with Mason Crosby, McCarthy said sternly.

On that count McCarthy is right. Crosby isnt the problem.

Instead, the blame rests squarely on the shoulders of McCarthy and special teams coach Shawn Slocum, who insist on saddling Crosby with a pair of inexperienced holders during camp punters Chris Bryan and Tim Masthay.

At a time when Crosby should be building confidence coming off a so-so 2009 season, he instead has to break in not one but two new holders.

The Packers revolving door holder policy is not doing their kicker any favors. Crosby has kicked with four different holders in his first three NFL seasons and is now working on a fifth.

Although McCarthy could employ backup quarterback Matt Flynn, who was a holder for four years at Louisiana State University and spent parts of the 2008 and 2009 seasons as Crosbys holder, the head coach seems hell-bent on filling the job with an inexperienced punter.

The ideal, as I stated yesterday, is for the punter to be the holder, said McCarthy on Monday. Its a relationship that best serves the kicker. I think that has been evident throughout this league just from a time commitment standpoint, but we feel fortunate to have Matt Flynn there if we need him.

The Packers and Crosby need Flynn, the sooner the better.

Bryan has no prior holding experience, and considering he hails from Australia where they like to drop-kick the ball, it makes little sense to put him in that role. Besides, Bryan and Masthay should focus all their attention on what they do best. Its a half-baked idea to have them split holding and punting duties when someone with Flynns experience is on the roster.

Its Crosby who must suffer the consequences of that decision.

In theory, McCarthys desire to use a punter to hold makes sense, since punters and kickers can spend more time working together in practice. But important decisions like this shouldnt be made out of convenience or some pie-in-the-sky philosophy. Flynn is the best holder on the roster and the job should be his.

Now is not the time to be mixing and matching holders and toying with Crosbys confidence. Hes a talented kicker with a big leg, but theres no telling how much his performance has been negatively impacted by the team changing holders so often.

Crosby has not complained or pointed fingers at anyone. Unlike former Packers kicker Ryan Longwell, who didnt hesitate to throw his holder under the bus after missed kicks, Crosby has taken the high road. He is determined to work hard with his holders, regardless of who or how many.

Were working out some kinks, Crosby said. We havent worked together a ton, so its one of those, were still trying to find that rhythm with one another.

Essentially, Crosby has no choice in the matter. It was a coachs decision to switch from Flynn to punter Jeremy Kapinos late last season.

Flynn said he had no problem holding and would gladly resume those duties if asked. Crosby said he had no problem with Flynn as his holder.

He did a good job, Crosby said. We didnt get a ton of reps together. Its tough with his other duties as quarterback. Sometimes it just didnt feel like we were working as much together. But coaches made the decision. Were going to work with these punters. Theyre young guys. Weve got to make them feel comfortable.

Thats part of the problem. The last thing Crosby should consider is making his fledgling holders comfortable. The less Crosby must think about, the better chance he has of kicking the football through the uprights.

Kind of funny. Longwell used to whine about his holder, but did well. Crosby doesn't complain and appears he has a right to.

Edit, okay, just read the article. Flynn was holding for the first half of the season and Kapinos the second half? That's not enough evidence that Flynn should be holding? Crosby was pretty solid under 49 and less early on in the season.

I think they should have Flynn holding and allow Crosby to work on his 50 yard bangers instead of breaking in a new kicker AND working on making ANY kick through the uprights.

I seem to remember Flynn botching a snap at one point during last season, and this led (a week or two later) to him being replaced by Kapinos.

I appreciate the 'advantage' of having a punter hold, in that the punter can work more exclusively in practice with Crosby. However, with neither Bryan or Masthay having any experience holding (though I'm not sure about Masthay's college career), I'd much rather go with Flynn. Moreover, I've always loved the options having the back-up QB hold gives to a team in case there's a botched snap, or the team want to execute a fake.

I hate to say it but I'm fearful our field goal kicking is not going to be that great. Let's hope they can get it corrected. Good/great fied goal kicking vs poor kicking is worth 2-3 games IMO.

I certainly hope they can get this worked out. Field goal kicking can be crucial in a game.

I've always been a fan of having the backup QB be the holder. It makes fakes a lot easier to execute.

Having Jon Ryan was a luxury because of how athletic he was. He gained all sorts of fans after his 18 yard run on a punt fake.

The problem with what Slocum/McCarthy is doing now with Crosby is that he's having two separate people compete for a position that doesn't even involve holding the ball in the first place.

Why not have someone hold who's actually a lock to make the team? Have Harrell do it for all I care.

I disagree with this. Now IS the time to be experimenting. It's the first week of training camp, why not see if you can't get a punter that can hold well too? It also gives Flynn more time to work on his quarterbacking. If it ends up failing terribly they can always switch to Flynn next week.

I'd also rather see Flynn spending more time working with the offense instead of special teams. He is our sole backup to Rodgers (no way Harrell passes him) and if Rodgers goes down we need him to be as prepared as possible.

Masthay was the holder on all kicks.

I'm with McCarthy on this one and not Vandermouse.

He can get a few hours practice with Flynn later.

This is training camp and Flynn has to concentrate on his QB duties as the best use of his time now.

And he misses the "gamewinner" from 39 yards out...

And then makes it on the re-do without the defense on the field.

How hard is it to be a holder?

Honestly I don't know... I'm thinking not that hard, but I wasn't a holder so I don't know... what do other think?

Is it really that hard?

I agree there needs to be a good holder but is it that hard to find a good one?

Maybe it's a lot harder than I think...
