Evening practice report
By Greg A. Bedard of the Journal Sentinel
Green Bay - Some notes after watching back on my evening practice film:
* Ive said this before, but keep an eye on TE Tom Crabtree. Hes solid and the man can block. Just watched him hold his own against Mike Neal, a guy that outweighs him by 50 pounds.
* Kregg Lumpkin has really improved in blitz pickup. He may be getting to Brandon Jacksons level. Would obviously help Lumpkin make the team.
* There was a very spirited blocking drill between the OLBs and TEs. Didnt see all of it, but the TEs felt very good about themselves after the drill.
* Jarrett Bush got faked out by WR Charles Dillon in one-on-ones. Greg Jennings made Josh Bell turn around.
* The second- and third-team offensive lines had a ton of trouble picking up pressures.
* Quinn Porter had a couple nice plays.
* TE Andrew Quarless made nice catch of a Graham Harrell pass thrown late and behind, and took a hit.
* Rodgers tried to throw one pass to Greg Jennings, who had four yes, four defenders around him. To his left, Finley was singled up against Tramon Williams, who had Morgan Burnett over the top. Only three out in the route against pressure.
* Dont know if having Cullen Jenkins drop back into coverage is going to work out, even just as a change of pace.
* Frank Zombo and Robert Francois worked at LOLB and ROLB, respectively, with the second team. Zombo moves very well in coverage.
* McCarthy got on the guys again for penalties. That reminded me that I meant to post his post-penalty glare at Porter from the morning practice. McCarthy is getting after them.
(that's for IronMan!!)
One-on-ones:
* Pickett and Spitz had a draw
* Harrell and Tauscherdraw
* Raji quickly moved past Wells
* Jenkins would have gotten past Colledge if Jenkins didnt slip
* Clifton got a little high on Jarius Wynn
* Lang did OK against Mike Neal. A draw.
* Harrell and Giacomini had a draw. Harrell was praised by McCarthy after practice and he should be. Hes done a nice job. But he needs to finish plays with a little nastiness.
* Dietrich-Smith did a very nice job against Toribio.
* Bulaga got worked by Ron Talley. Bulaga got beat on an inside move when he got his weight moving too much to the outside. It left him with nothing in his punch.
* C.J. Wilson ran through Allen Barbre.
* Giacomini and Neal had a draw.
* Nick McDonald very solid against Harrell.
* Then Raji gave a quick move around McDonald. Really quick.
* Nice job by Marshall Newhose against Wynn (who is having a tough camp)
* Man, Cullen Jenkins gave Chris Campbell the swim move of his life. It was like that scene in Top Gun: Whered he go? Whered who go? What did Jenkins do the next time the two faced off? Did the same thing but to the outside. Wiley vet.
* Lang kept improving as the day went on. Stayed in front of Pickett in two matchups, and Robert Francois. Kept a much better base with calm feet. Starting to look like the Lang of old.
* McDonald did well against Toribio.
* Neal got the best of Giacomini with pure strength. So did Poppinga a few plays later.
* Colledge got smoked by Jenkins.
* Clifton thwarted Matthews.
* Harrell showed a great speed rush around McDonald. Impressive.
* Colledge rebounded showing good strength against Wilson.
