Dez Bryant won't carry Roy Williams' pads

NFL rookies are often required to carry veterans' pads as a sort of training camp hazing ritual. But Cowboys rookie Dez Bryant wants no part of it.

Tim MacMahon of ESPNDallas.com reports that Roy Williams gave his pads to Bryant today, and Bryant refused to carry them.

"I'm not doing it," Bryant said. "I feel like I was drafted to play football, not carry another player's pads."

Bryant says this isn't a case of a first-round pick thinking he's above an NFL tradition. Instead, it's about a player who says he won't tolerate being treated badly.

"If I was a free agent, it would still be the same thing," Bryant said. "I just feel like I'm here to play football. I'm here to try to help win a championship, not carry someone's pads. I'm saying that out of no disrespect to [anyone]."

But Williams says Bryant was wrong to refuse his request.

"Everybody has to go through it," Williams said. "I had to go through it. No matter if you're a No. 1 pick or the 7,000th pick, you've still got to do something when you're a rookie. I carried pads. I paid for dinners. I paid for lunches. I did everything I was supposed to do, because I didn't want to be that guy."

Although the Cowboys' decision to draft Bryant was widely viewed as a sign that the team is less than thrilled with Williams' performance, both Bryant and Williams have steadfastly insisted that there's no bad blood between them. That stance of unity between Bryant and Williams lasted through all of two days of training camp.

UPDATE: After seeing this item, Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman weighed in on Twitter about what Williams' next step should be.

I kind of like it that he didn't do it. I bet if it was an OL's pads he'd have gladly carried them.

Wow, WHAT A PRIMADONNA!

I like Dez. I wouldn't carry my #1 rival's pads either.

That's kind of how I thought too. I like Bryant, but don't hold it against him for not carrying the pads of someone he's eventually going to replace.

If it was Barbers, or Wittens or even Romo's pads, I bet he carries their pads.

It's not like they're being asked to do nasty or degrading stuff. Like Williams said, he did it, everyone does it, so suck it up and pick up the pads.

It really seems to me that he is putting himself ahead of the team. Off to a great start, rookie.

But he's a teammate first and a #1 rival second. That's why they have these little rituals. It's a team-building thing. So this doesn't strike me as a good way for Dez Bryant to get started in the NFL. On the other hand, I don't think it's a huge deal, and we'll see how it turns out.

I've never quite understood this "treat the rookies like shit so they bond to us" shit.

This isn't summer camp with 10 or 15-year olds or whatever. This is adults. If I can't bond with my teammates on a better basis than "well, we all survived rookie hazing," I'm not sure they're worth bonding with.

I find it mildly hilarious that the one acting more like an adult here seems to be the guy who has been talked about as having "maturity issues".

Good for Dez. Fuck you, Williams. Fuck you, Merriman.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Hey, YOU rookie, be mature, act like an adult, set a good impression for the kids who will look up to you ... and btw carry my pads and let me duct tape you to the locker room. Why you ask? Because I'm a mature veteran in the NFL, that's why, KID!

Or maybe the media just reported a story that was of interest to fans. This was the first time I'd heard of a rookie refusing to do something like that, so it was interesting to me, and a lot of other fans as well. Was it a big deal? No. But it was noteworthy. And the fact that Bryant has completely backpedaled from his original position shows that he realizes he screwed up. Good for him.

Martha Careful (22-Jan) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (22-Jan) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (22-Jan) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
