I'm looking at a Condo today and they said they want a 24 month lease. Why is this? Is this good or bad? It's in a really nice area and its a really nice place, from the pictures I've seen.

But does a place that requires such a lease a good thing or bad?

I don't know. But it's obvious they want someone in there for at least 2 years.
It's good, if you end up loving the place......bad, if you end up with lousy neighbors. Then you are stuck for 2 years.

Yup....it can end up costing you BIG money.
Being as you are in a new situation, you are at the mercy of your employer, being in a new state and all. If things go sour, and you want out, you're stuck.
(I'm not saying it WILL go sour, just that you have to watch out for YOU.)

One good side might be you locking in the rent for two years.

But I wouldn't want to take a 2 year lease when I first move to an area, no matter how excited I was. It would be one thing if I'd already been in the area for a year, but otherwise.

I can get him down to 18 months no problem. I just don't know why such a lengthy term.

I guess it could mean that people in the area are more stable because they can commit for a long period of time. There's a cop that lives across the street.

That may be so.....but 18 months is still a long time to commit in a new area.
In the end, you have to decide if you want to commit for tht long.
That's the hard part.......trying to figure out what to do. It may end up being great.....but the fear of the unknown is the hard part.

Two things:
[ol]🇱🇮18-24 months in a brand new place is a bad deal. I'd only do it if I had already been in the place for a year and knew the lay of the land. You could be getting yourself into a serious problem later on if you sign this deal.

You don't want a cop for a neighbor. Bunch of alcoholics.
