Got nasty letter from Mediacom (cable/internet provider) today. CBS claims I illegally downloaded something called "CIS:Miami" and unless I respond with a counternotification within 24 hours, blah blah blah...

Of course the phone number provided only allows listening to a recorded message.

Of course my "counternotification" must contain various things like consent to service of process, jurisdiction of thus and so court, etc etc.

And, I love this line, "we are providing you with your right under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act."

Oh, yes, just to be clear, I've never downloaded anything to do with CIS:Miami in my life -- frankly, I never liked the show -- i think I watched it twice --- maybe 2 years ago?

Heck, I've never even figured out how to illegally download music. Heck, I buy music from the overpriced iTunes. :)

Outside chance that someone in neighborhood did, since cable company (the same one who wrote the letter) set my internet up "unsecured". (And I was too much of a dolt at the time to know that.)

That's apparently how the DMCA works...guilty til proven innocent.

Don't worry too much about it, you're not going to get sued. If your wireless network is still unsecured, secure it. If you don't know how, call mediacom... they set it up. You need to have your network secured. Otherwise, what'll happen if some pervert downloads kiddie porn off your wireless? Then you'll have problems.

Seriously, just call them and explain that it wasn't you, explain that your wireless is unsecure and it was set up that way by them. Ask them for instructions on how to proceed, if they're not willing to help you, don't be afraid to piss and scream. Trust me, ISPs love to screw you and do anything but make you happy.

I bet that's your answer.....once you said it was unsecured, ANYONE thats close enough to get the signal can use YOUR addy.
Then YOU get stuck.
And sad thing is.....someone may have already used it to download kiddy porn.
If i were you, i'd get it secured, and have copies of all the proof that you have that it was set up that way by your cable provider. Just in CASE the cops come knocking on your door at some time and accusing you of bad things.
