I don't see why this decision is being embraced.

Whenever I see Jolly play, he makes a key deflection. He has a nose for that, you can't teach that, and I see nobody else on our defensive line that does that.

Losing Jolly means we lost much needed depth. Gloat on Neal and Wilson all you want, but we don't know what they offer.

I can only speak for me, but I also happen to know that many of our fellow members on this site feel pretty much the same as I do.

My fandom does not include rooting for players that evidence serious character flaws. From what I have read, Mr. Jolly was rather heavily involved with the whole sizzurp/purple drank culture...
Some might say his whole deal was an accepted way to roll from whence he came in Texas.
You do the crime, you do the time- period. I don't care if it's Jolly, Aaron- whoEVER. If I want to root for thugs and assholes, I'll become a Vikings fan.

It is not that it is being embraced.. it is that it is what is right. Personally, give these juices or drug offenders a full year rip for foul one.. they are illegal.. and not just in the sports world.

Would I rather have a "clean" Jolly than no Jolly at all.. of course.. it hurts our team... but just because it hurts our team doesn't mean that it shouldn't be done.

Kid needs a wake up.. size 16 in ass should provide it.

I felt this way when Favre sought out addiction help.. he should have gotten a rip.. but the NFL and Packer brass protected their valuable asset... just like they did with the Pats a couple years ago. And in a way.. what they did for Big Ben this year.

That would be my only complaint in all this.. a equal playing field for the stars of the league vs the lower tiered role players.

It seems like the legal system is trying to make an example out of Jolly, and the NFL is following suit. Prosecutors have been building their case against him for two years now. If he broke the law, he should be punished, but the response by the legal system (and now the NFL) seems all out of proportion to the alleged crime. I'll be angry if it turns out that they don't have a solid case against him.

Losing Jolly is going to hurt the defense. He started at DE last year and did a very good job. I don't think Pickett would've been moved to starting DE this summer if Jolly had been expected to play. It's good that the Packers have taken steps to minimize the impact of losing Jolly, but this is a significant loss.

Well what did you expect from Jolly this season?

and Jolly does make plays but he also gives them up... he gets out of his gap at times like the Cardinals very long run play Jolly went to the inside instead of keeping the edge and Jones also failed run blocking and they got the long run.

"beast" wrote:

That may be true - his gap discipline leaves a lot to be desired at times - but frankly this is a pretty serious blow to the depth of our d-line.

Right now, our most experienced back-up is Justin Harrell. That is downright scary, considering the excessive snaps our starting D-linemen were forced to play last year. Speaking of which, Jolly himself played close to 80% of our defensive snaps, which goes to show you the depth he could've provided behind Pickett.

Wynn / Talley / Neal / Wilson each become more important going forward, but man this is a pretty serious blow at our depth. God forbid Pickett or Raji get injured ... we're looking at a team that will be looking towards a rookie (Neal or Wilson) or a project player (Wynn or Talley) who have next to zero NFL game experience. I shutter to think of relying on Justin Harrell who, outside of being injured, when last time on the field in a game was playing in pass-rushing packages when his forte was billed as a run-stopping Defensive linemen.

Not the ideal situation to be in for a team being looked to seriously contend for the Superbowl. That said, maybe a rookie or two surprise, or Wynn or Talley take a huge step forward and help solidify the depth. But right now, losing Jolly is a pretty bad hit to our D-line depth.

that explains the Pickett to DE and us picking two DL in the draft... my guess is this was known for some time.

When healthy in college Harrell could do it all and not be stopped... he's not a run stopper. He's a do it all kind of guy when healthy... just he hasn't and may never be able to remain healthy.

But I remember one play where he just flat out ripped his way around the Bears LG as soon as the ball was snapped. He was still out of shape after getting back on the field for the first time since an injury so he could catch the QB though  If he would of got the sack there then him ripping past that LG in less than a second would of been youtubed and most people would of seen it by now.

If Harrell would come back and stay healthy that would be some good Karma. One guy gets a "kick in the a$$" for being an idiot and the other guy gets to play for hanging in there.

I can't see how they could not've seen this coming. It was obvious that he was going to be out one way or another. Add to that that Jolly would be up for a contract extension next year, anyway, and you really have to add some D-linemen.

Anyway, back to Jolly, maybe an entire season is a bit much, especially since he hasn't actually been punished in court just yet, but his actions were more than stupid. A suspension is well deserved.

Johnny who? He's gone, no time to worry about what might have been.

I bet there is not one guy on the team worrying about Johhny Jolly as it pertains to the upcoming season.

Get the young guys ready, hope Harrel can stay healthy and head into the pre-season not looking back.

The worst scenario is that A.R. and his gang of quality recievers and rb's will just have to put up more points to win some games.

I don't have a problem with that.

You guys are not making me feel any better about this by conjuring up the ghost of Justin Harrell. It stinks to lose Jolly, but there are other guys besides Harrell who can back up our starting three. Anything we get from Harrell will be a bonus at this point.
