In the nearly 90 years of packer football you would think that just about every jersey number has a history and that some great player had it in the past.

Yet some numbers never seem to do well or have much of a history.

If you are a rookie trying to make it, do you think it would be tough or unlucky to have such a number or would you want to create a history for it?

By the way did you know that only Curly Lambeau ever wore #1 for the Green and Gold? As owner and coach I guess he he could.

Look at some Packer numbers that aren't so famous or lucky:

#6 - No Packer player ever wore it more than one season. It went 78 years without being worn until a punter wore it in 2005 and another punter in 2008. Nobody chose it this season either.

#9 - Specialists Bidwell and Ryan had this number but few have had it long term. One of our tryout punters has it now.

#10 - If Matt Flynn wears it 4 years he will tie the record for having it the longest with Al Del Greco.

#11 - David Beverly and Eddie Garcia. BJ Sander last had it. Although Matt Hasselback had it bring him luck when he was traded in the Jamal Reynolds trajedy. Chasten West has now and he will get cut.

#16 - Good thing Bart Starr wore it only his rookie year. Scott Hunter, Randy Wright, and Craig Nall didn't help #16 become famous. Swain may want to switch numbers.

#18 - Tobin Rote is the most famous and Doug Peterson wore it the longest. Probably for a reason. Patrick Williams will not make it legendary.

#23 - I only remember Travis "Roadrunner" Williams wearing it. No Packer choose it this season either.

#27 - Was Blackmon on injured reserve last season because Buckley gave it bad luck?

#32 - Would Brandon Jackson have had a better career if he had a better number? #32 has not been kind.

#39 - Nobody has it now. How many remember back up Mike Pior on the Super Bowl teams of 96 and 97?

#47 - Good thing Bigby got rid of it. Good luck Frank Zombo.

#49 - Robert Francois has no old timers jealous of him having the number.

#69 - Hasn't helped anyone. Rookie Chris Campbell could use your prayers.

#70 - You would think a famous Packer had this some time. I have hope for Lang.

Note - Please do not say anything that might jinx our current Long Snapper. Also Brian Noble's old number has sure been bad luck since he wore it.

I have nothing against Lang and hope this does not jinx him (knock on wood).

well, part of it is that some numbers just look like crap on a jersey and starters will change to the better looking ones wile leaving the "uglies" to backups and rookies.

It really doesn't matter. I bet you could find similar things on other teams too. It's pure coincidence.

Awesome post. I thanked the topic not because I believe in luck, but because I love history.

On the flip side, a lot of numbers are lucky. Look at 80 for instance. Off the top of my head, I can think of perennial Pro Bowler James Lofton and 3 time Pro Bowler Donald Driver.

34 is a lucky number for a lot of football teams. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more 34s in the Hall of Fame than any other number.

Here's a question. Has anyone on the Packers ever worn 00? I knew there was a WR on the Oilers years ago who was 00 but I don't remember a Packer.

Jim Otto thought it was a play on his name.
Remember players used to not have names on their jerseys.
Jim Otto owns a lot of Burger King franchises in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada out here.
Unfortunately, Jim Otto can barely walk now and uses 2 canes.

I started this thread because every year some free agent rookie get a number that you instintively know means they will not make the team.

Most of the time with Packer players you remember someone else who had the number. Bulaga got a good number because the Packers expect him to be successful. Burnett was given Wynn's number immediately.

Guys like Robert Francois and Frank Zombo get the leftovers.
