This suspension had nothing to due with the pending legal case.

Reports are he failed drug tests.

Players aren't suspended until the 2nd time they fail. Which is four games. Right?

Yeah, this seems very odd. First suspension is a whole year, plus maybe more? This has GOTTA be more than just a failed drug test.

Johnny Jolly didn't sign his tender offer, last I read.

Edit, he's not listed on the Packers roster either.

Defensive lineman Johnny Jolly signed his restricted free agent tender before the Monday night deadline.

Jolly will be paid $2.521 million this season, although the money is not guaranteed and he can be cut by the Packers at any time without a penalty to the team.

June 15th. It does say "He will be paid $2.5 million this season although it is not guaranteed, and he only receives weekly installments once the season starts. Jolly can be released at any time with no financial hit to the team." So, other than talent, this isn't really a loss. And if Justin comes on and provides anything positive, we'll be okay. I think.

So this makes no sense?

From PFT posted by me:

Jolly's suspension is for substance abuse

Posted by Evan Silva on July 16, 2010 4:59 PM ET

When news of Packers defensive end Johnny Jolly's indefinite suspension broke Friday, we assumed the ban was related to Jolly's pending drug trial. Jolly is accused of numerous offenses that essentially paint him as a drug kingpin in the Houston area. So it seemed likely that Jolly had violated the NFL's Personal Conduct Policy.

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora, however, reports that Jolly was suspended not for a conduct code violation, but for breaking the league's rules against substance abuse. La Canfora's report leaves the door open for Jolly's suspension to stem from something unrelated to his court case. Like one or more failed drug tests.

Therefore, the indefinite ban figures to be continued beyond this season if, in addition to violating the NFL's Substance Abuse Policy, Jolly is convicted of what Texas prosecutors have alleged and is thus found to be in violation of the Personal Conduct Policy.

La Canfora wondered aloud on Twitter whether "this is the end for Jolly in the NFL."

ESPN's Michael Smith reported Friday afternoon on NFL Live that Jolly will have the opportunity to appeal his suspension following Super Bowl XLV.

Wow, I'm confused. I don't know the drug policy suspension thing well, but I thought first offense was a warning or something or other. Second offense, 4 games. I don't know much beyond that.

I wonder if he wasted four times in a month and failed each?

I am going to go out on a limb of sorts and say that I believe an federal drug charges will be coming for Jolly.. that smoke that he is a dealer might have more to it.. I have nothing but a guess based on the fact that the NFL will want to get out in front of this before it breaks..

well apparently Jolly was raised in a pretty rough section of Houston, the same place where he was arrested with the codine.

its just sad, even with all the perks ($$$) of being an NFL player he just couldnt give up that lifestyle.

He is suspended without pay.. we move him to the suspended designation yet we still retain his rights til Free agency next season.. if this situation resolves itself.. we can bring him back.. if not.. we have bought a year of his rights for basically nothing.
