While any story written in late June should be taken with a grain of salt, we couldnt help but notice this article from the Buffalo News about offensive tackle Jamon Meredith. You remember him, dont you? He was last years fifth-round pick from South Carolina whose conditioning was so poor that he was released by the Packers on Sept. 5. He was later re-signed to the practice squad, where he lasted until the Bills plucked him away on Sept. 23. The 24-year-old started four games for Buffalo, and while he allowed only 2 sacks in 264 snaps, few members of Green Bays front office were lamenting the loss. That might be about to change. Meredith, who resembled a tight end more than an offensive tackle as a rookie, is now carrying 311 pounds on his chiseled frame. And while hell never look huge, he now looks like a player who might stand a fighting chance against some of the leagues bigger and stronger right defensive ends.

The Packers, of course, re-signed Chad Clifton and drafted Bryan Bulaga in the past six months, so both the present and the future at left tackle looks very promising. Still, you never want to let a good young prospect get away especially one who plays such an important position. Considering how few mistakes GM Ted Thompson has made when it comes to evaluating the personnel on his own roster, well give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to Meredith. Still, the thought of allowing him to walk away while Breno Giacomini was kept around will be irksome until either Meredith plays his way out of the league and/or Giacomini plays his way into it. We find the latter very unlikely. The former? It could happen, but were just not as confident as we were before reading the Buffalo News.

I never did understand why we just released him like that...I thought it was a bad decision.

I wasn't all that surprised he was let go. I was surprised that he was let go and Breno was kept. The combination felt -- still feels -- weird.

But when you decide most OL roster spots based on potential -- as, IMO, Ted Thompson has -- it really shouldn't be surprising.

I just want to see what the hell Breno could do. I blame Breno for the loss of Sutton and Meredith, both PS players that got stolen away by other teams. What the hell do they see in him? Why are we so invested in him? I don't get it.

I remember being frustrated by Breno last year here on the site. I still dont understand wth he is consuming a roster spot for. It gets even more frustrating when you have two guys(Bulaga and Lang) who have come AFTER Breno, but already pass him at either tackle spot on the depth chart.

I hope he's on the practice squad at the very most this season. Either that or he'd better prove to be a serviceable lineman some time very soon.

Jamon Meredith was extremely raw at camp last season, so I guess they felt he wasn't worthy of being a gameday backup. And once a player is on the practice squad, he can be easily poached for the offer of a 53 man roster spot.

I didn't like seeing Meredith go to another team so early in his tenure as a Packer, and I agree with the author that this is one that could come back to bite Ted. It's not likely, but it is possible.

There's not much to go on in this article, though. Allowing two sacks in 264 snaps is pretty good, but not great. I think that's only about four games. And it doesn't say anything about how many pressures he gave up or how well he run blocked. And having a chiseled 311 pound frame is nice, but what did he used to weigh, and more to the point, is this going to make him better?

I don't know OL, but I could have sworn the Packers made some kind of an offer to Meridith (sp) to stay with us and he took the other offer instead.

I agree with the comment on Breno, what??

Scouting reports varied, but he weighed anywhere from 290 to 300 before being drafted.

We don't know how Jamon would have turned out in our OL system. He may flourish where he is and stank it up with us. I'm still not sold on a power O coach teaching a blend of ZBS.

beast (5h) : Wow, 95% drop in investment revenue? Would be interesting to hear the details of why...
dfosterf (25-Jul) : It's my one day deal complaint dept. on shareholder meeting day
dfosterf (25-Jul) : Probably a homer access credential intimidation kinda thing
dfosterf (25-Jul) : Meathead "journalists" skip this, concentrating on operational revenue when convenient. They switch when net revenue is more favorable.
dfosterf (25-Jul) : Resulting in an actual drop of net revenue of 12.5%. She is from Minnesota. Just sayin'
dfosterf (25-Jul) : Any plans to hold Maureen Smith (CFO) accountable for a 95% drop in investment revenue?

Zero2Cool (23-Jul) : Suppose if locker room is main issue, we sitting pretty
wpr (23-Jul) : I thought so Mucky. In those useless player polls GB always rates high overall. Locker is a part of it.
