Obama to be given the right to shut down the internet with 'kill switch'

Barack Obama will be given a 'kill switch' in times of national emergency

President Obama will be given the power to shut down the Internet with a 'kill switch' in a new law being proposed in the US.

He would be able to order popular search engines such a Google and Yahoo to suspend access to their websites in times of national emergency.

Other US based Internet service providers as well as broadband providers would also come under his control in times of a 'cybersecurity emergency.' Any company that failed to comply would be subject to huge fines.

Critics of the new law, which has been proposed by former presidential candidate Joe Liebermann, said it would be an abuse of power to let the White House control the internet.

TechAmerica, one of the largest U.S. technology lobby groups, said the new law had the 'potential for absolute power.'.

The proposed legislation, introduced into the US Senate by Lieberman who is chairman of the US Homeland Security committee, seeks to grant the President broad emergency powers over the internet in times of national emergency.
A sustained terror attack on multiple cities would be considered a national emergency as would a cyber attack by 'hackers' on the US financial system.

The director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair warned earlier this year that the US is 'severely threatened' by malicious cyber attacks.

The number of attacks on Government departments has increased by 400 per cent in the last three years.

Under the proposed bill, which has been dubbed an Internet 'kill switch', the US Government would effectively seize control of access to the internet.
Lieberman argued the bill was necessary to 'preserve those networks and assets and our country and protect our people'.

He said: 'For all of its 'user-friendly' allure, the Internet can also be a dangerous place with electronic pipelines that run directly into everything from our personal bank accounts to key infrastructure to government and industrial secrets.

'Our economic security, national security and public safety are now all at risk from new kinds of enemies--cyber-warriors, cyber-spies, cyber-terrorists and cyber-criminals.'

His bill is formally titled the Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, or PCNAA.

While the US Government would not be able to control the internet in other countries access to the most popular sites would be cut off.

Google, Yahoo and YouTube, the top three most visited sites, are all based in the US.

Google logs an estimated two billion hits a day from 300 million users.

Under the cyber law any company on a list created by Homeland Security that also 'relies on' the Internet, the telephone system, or any other component of the U.S. 'information infrastructure' would be subject to command by a new National Centre for Cybersecurity and Communications (NCCC) that would be created inside Homeland Security.

Google, the world's most popular search engine, refused to comment. A spokesman said the law was not yet Government policy.

Joe Liebermann was behind this? No surprise. That guy has some fascistic tendencies.

This surprises anyone?

I mean, how many of our noble Senators and Representatives objected to the Patriot Act?

Some days it's easier to understand the crazies of Idaho and Waco than others. Some days its easier to contemplate being like the Gene Hackman character in An Enemy of the State.

I don't see this as a good thing. It's essentially the same as if 50 years ago they proposed to shut down all radio and tv stations in the event of a national emergency. What good would that do? It would kill a major form of mass communication and could only make the situation worse. How stupid. Yes, let's take away everyone's ability to communicate in the midst of a crisis.

What next... them being able to shut down the cell phone grid as well in a state of emergency... lets blind the people from seeing what is going on.

Monitoring it is invasive enough.. but taking the right away seems unconstitutional.

Funny how the left is always screaming fascism about the right.....but who wants to silence their media critics, have authority over the use of the internet, and impose speech codes on people? In Psych 101...this is called projection.

My initial reaction to this is it's a breach of our First Amendment.

digsthepack, remember that Lieberman is ostensibly a right-leaning centrist politician. He left the Democratic Partly, flirted briefly with the Republicans (there was talk of making him McCain's running mate), and now has declared himself an independent.

It's only fair to point out that, contrary to the deliberately controversial headline, this bill is sponsored by Lieberman, not Obama. That's why I phrased the thread title as I did (though I see I forgot the word "President").

I understand your desire to be precise and applaud it.

However:

A president never "sponsors" a bill. A president may support it (just like you or I may), but only a congresscritter gets to be a sponsor.

All that said, if anyone thinks Obama is going to protect them against this sort of nonsense, they're deluded. Badly.

The fascist tendency is not a question of right or left. It's a question of the degree of belief in the wisdom of the state. That's why a Lieberman can find a place in either major party if he wants it: they're all into state power first.

TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Looks like we signed Clayton Tune as QB3

TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : As a Canadian and a follower of Canadian University football. I am rooting for him

dfosterf (27-Aug) : Clayton Tune cut by the Cards? Don't know if that's the guy, we shall see
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Per Bill Huber, the Packers will not be bringing back Taylor Elgersma or Sean Clifford on the practice squad, so a new third quarterback

dfosterf (27-Aug) : Hopefully Jerry reaches under the seat cushions and ashtrays of his jet and scrapes up the 45 million apr and spares us further nonsense
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Have to admit the PO'd Cowboy fan videos would be fun to watch. Problem with draft picks is half their fanbase barely knows what that is
beast (27-Aug) : I think Cowboys fans are ready to get their pitch forks and burning sticks if Jerry were to trade Micah
dfosterf (27-Aug) : If Jerry traded Micah to GB, here in northern Va. they would have to quick build yet another data center to handle the internet hate traffic
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : its signing and trades that you don't hear about, other then announced
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : If you hear rumors about Packers sign or trade, won't happen. Not how they work
dfosterf (27-Aug) : 19 players in a contract year. Jones called loss to us worst loss in Cowboy history. Forget Parsons trade. Not happenin' Cap'n
packerfanoutwest (27-Aug) : The Packers, meanwhile, are the youngest team in the league for the third consecutive year.
dfosterf (27-Aug) : That it was darkest before the dawn in Bengals and Commanders before they got deals done
