I understand your desire to be precise and applaud it.

However:

A president never "sponsors" a bill. A president may support it (just like you or I may), but only a congresscritter gets to be a sponsor.

All that said, if anyone thinks Obama is going to protect them against this sort of nonsense, they're deluded. Badly.

The fascist tendency is not a question of right or left. It's a question of the degree of belief in the wisdom of the state. That's why a Lieberman can find a place in either major party if he wants it: they're all into state power first.

I think there are plenty of cases of fascistic tendencies on both sides of the aisle. The Patriot Act came from primarily the Republicans with the Democrats rolling over and playing dead.

Gun control (yes, gun control is fascistic) comes primarily from the Democrats.

The War on Drugs and the War on Terror, both with fascistic tendencies, both come primarily from the Republican party.

Tipper Gore is a Democrat and she knows how to run your life and how to raise your kids better than you do.

If one truly hates fascism, keep a close eye on both major parties. I personally can't stand either of them because one of them wants to ban these freedoms, the other one wants to ban those freedoms.

I don't see this as a good thing. It's essentially the same as if 50 years ago they proposed to shit down all radio and tv stations in the event of a national emergency. What good would that do? It would kill a major form of mass communication and could only make the situation worse. How stupid. Yes, let's take away everyone's ability to communicate in the midst of a crisis.

You are correct...it comes from both sides. But the Ds are in office, and they elevate this shit to levels not really imagined.

I hope in this election a whole lot of incumbent blood spills into the streets..Repub, Dem....does not matter. The problem lies in career politicians, the influence that buys them over time, and the deepening acrimony that comes from such protracted philosophical battles over many years.

Two terms and done..cleans much of this shit up. But then again, who would have to vote that in? Oh, yeah...the same assholes that are the problem.

I like the idea of fresh blood, but at the same time what you often do when you replace the incumbents is get rid of the people who know how to do the dirty work that makes the gears turn in this country. New people with fresh ideas is great... just not so great when they have absolutely no clue how to take an idea and make it into something productive.

I'm curious, digsthepack... What are these "levels not really imagined"?

The hyperbole in this thread is starting to annoy me. In point of fact, from a constitutional perspective, President Obama has been a much better president than his predecessor, in that he has remained deferential to the prerogatives of Congress. Our constitution gave us a relatively weak chief executive, and while Obama may be no model of constitutionality, he has made some effort to scale back the abuses.

Furthermore, he has been one of the most pro-gun (or at least not anti-gun) presidents we've had in decades. Gun control provisions around the country on both the federal and state level have been scaled back at a rate perhaps never seen since the advent of gun control.

Of course President Obama didn't sponsor this bill; it is impossible for a president to do so. That's why all the rhetoric flying around about how this is an obvious fascist power grab by Obama is preposterous. I don't see this bill passing in the first place, but even if it does in some neutered form, I frankly don't see Obama signing it. The backlash against it would be severe.

And just to reiterate, Lieberman was in the running to be the REPUBLICAN RUNNING MATE. If anything, this is a naked power grab by the neo-conservative camp, not the left.

WIth all due respect, the fact that he is an improvement over his predecessor is *not* sufficient. A dead ardvark with fleas carrying bubonic plague would have been better than his predecessor.

In my hyperbolic opinion, the country would have been better with the Oval Office empty than occupied by either Obama or his predecessor.

The reason America is so fucked up politically is that we have become a nation willing to settle for "the lesser of two evils".

I'm not sure anyone said this was a fascist power grab by Obama. People said Obama is a fascist. That's a very different thing. Hyperbolic, perhaps. But still a different thing.

I am no Obama advocate. I am merely protesting the ravings on the right that he's somehow worse than Bush, which he patently and demonstrably is not. If nothing else, all one has to do is cruise a few leftist websites to see that they are more dissatisfied with President Obama than right wingers are.

I dunno about that. I know that there are some lefties that are unhappy with Obama, but I don't think they're unsatisfication is greater than the right wingers/Tea Party (is there that much of a difference?).
