The owners have proposed expanding the regular season by two games, to 18 and shortening the pre-season from four to two.

I don't like this at all. The NFL already has a shortage of talent and we want to expand the season two more games? We'll have to expand the rosters too.

I'd like to see two more games count, however, then you can throw out a lot of the stats from the last 20 or years of the 16 game season. Suddenly rushing for 2k is the 90's version of 1k. Passing for 5k is diluted as well.

What do you think about going to 18 games?

No. I don't get the reasoning. College players play 12 (not including any bowl or conference championship games), the jump from 12-14 to 18 is a big one.. They already have a rookie wall as it is.

Still, a preseason game isn't a regular season game. You play half of it at most.

18 regular season games, the team with the least injuries will have a huge leg up on everyone else. In a 16 game season, the injury count is already unreal.

Heck, look at how many key players we had injured for us last year. Imagine 18 games.

I don't like it.

As a fan, I'd like 2 more regular season games.

I used to like preseason games a lot more before the damn announcers ruined them for me. I liked the opportunity to see the second- and third-stringers. To get enthusiastic about the no-names. To debate who had what skills and who was just a guy about to be cut. I've never been able to attend training camp, and so that was really cool.

Preseason was also a fun time to watch games between other teams, and think about who might be cut (and then picked up by the packers).

But of course the networks and their "storylines" babble about this or that star, their damned booth conversations, their missing of several plays in a row and virtually ignoring the action for quarters at a time, ruined the preseason games for me.

So, I'd rather see two more regular season games than two preseason games.

But if they go that direction, they'll have to change the roster rules. Get rid of the inactive list, for a start. Change the PUP/IR rules. Increase the roster size.

On the other hand, if I were a player, I'd hate the idea. Two more games means two more weeks of pounding on the body.

And if I were a player, and the owners went ahead with it, I'd be more interested than ever in getting a pit bull/asshole agent, holding out for higher salaries, and all the rest. Because two more games of wear and tear on the body means an even shorter career and/or even more accumulating medical problems for life-after-football.

Expanding to 18 games, means by year five, you'd have 90 games under your belt, where as with 16 games, you'll have 80. That's a lot more wear and tear.

The new dead 'age' for running backs will be 28/29.

True about RBs.

One more thing in favor of 16 game seasons - money for people who aren't rich (or would rather not spend that much money on games). Preseason games are cheaper. I've only seen one regular season game but seen a bunch of preseason games.

I'm greedy I want 18.

16 games is way too short for me.

More football fix is what I need.

Honestly an 18 game season is smart for everyone in the beginning - but it will come to bite the NFL in the butt later. As we have now seen these past NFL players are comming out and blasting the NFL for their lack of consideration of the player. Adding two more games will not only increase the injury chances but will add to a growing cause.

But besides this every other reason is good. The regular season games will go down in price and more people will be able to get in. My question is who will the teams play for these two games? Can it be maybe we add two more out-of-conference games? Honestly I'd love to see that. This could change the whole scheduling in the NFL, actually...

tbh, i'd rather see 2 more real games and 2 less fake games. a guy gets hurt in preseason and it's just such a waste.

what i'd really rather see though, is just shortening preseason by 2 games and leaving the rest as is.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

Personally.. I know this sounds anti logical for a football nut like myself.. but I don't think I would like an additional two regular season games.

Why?

I think it will water down the importance of a single game.. more games equal less importance on any single game.

My opinion.. stay at 16 weeks.. cut the preseason down to 2 or 3 at the most and launch a developmental league for rookies and guys with say less than 3 years experience.

That would raise the talent level, allow football to be more of an annual sport and still accomplish raking in the coin for the owners. A 6 to 8 week summer league in the same venues with assistants coaching the teams

I agree with Shawn. Maybe have the other league start after the Super Bowl for a 'summer' league type of deal.

Cut preseason by a game or two.
Stay at 16 regular season games.
Start a "minor" league.

Speaking of the length of season.... in the interest of completeness...

any votes for the old 14-game season? Or (and this is before my time), the 12-game season?

Or what about the variable-length season, Wade? Look at some of the Packers' old season records some time. It's very interesting.

I have mixed emotions about this. On one hand I like the idea of 2 more games that mean something. Players don't need the time to get into shape like years ago when many had to take off season jobs to make ends meet. Traing camp was to get them into enough shape to play and then they still "played their way into shape." Rookies are much better prepared because of better strength and conditioning in college.

On the other hand, the extra games water down the meaning of each game. I enjoy watching players trying to make the team.

I like it the way it is. However, I fear we'll have an 18 game schedule for one reason...greed.

Could that proposal be some kind of 'bargaining chip' within the CBA-drama?

"If you forego blabla we cancel the idea of 18 games...." or something like that.

Just a thought.
