Nothing shocking.. but damn it is slow anyway, news wise.

http://www.profootballweekly.com/2010/05/30/packers-could-release-number-of-veterans

Our sources in Green Bay would not be shocked if the team released a sizable number of familiar veterans this offseason. Included on the list of potential casualties is eighth-year TE Donald Lee, who is now looking up at Jermichael Finley on the depth chart; sixth-year LB Brady Poppinga, whose pass-rush shortcomings could prove to be his undoing; fifth-year CB-S Jarrett Bush; and fourth-year OT Allen Barbre. We also hear it's almost a given that one of the team's three fullbacks (John Kuhn, Korey Hall or Quinn Johnson) will be sent packing.

We hear one undrafted Packers rookie who figures to have a good shot at making the final roster is CB Sam Shields, a University of Miami (Fla.) product with more speed than anybody currently on the roster. Shields, who ran two 40-yard dashes in 4.30 and 4.33 seconds on grass surfaces at his pro day in Coral Gables, Fla., excelled in kick-return coverage at "the U," an area in which the Packers could use a major boost.

I would love for Shields to make the team. We could use a speed boost.

Yeah, with a TE drafted, if he turns out to be any good, Donald Lee may be gone. We'll lose a FB fo shizzle.

I would hope Poppinga doesn't get cut. I understand he is being over payed, but he is decent depth, and beyond him I'm not so sure. I would love to have someone better then him to take over, but I'm just not seeing it yet.

Maybe one of the RFA's will emerge during training camp.

For Poppinga to be cut, someone will have to beat him out. He provides good depth. For the record though, he is our 3rd highest paid LB and makes more money than Pro Bowler Clay Matthews. That may be a strike against him.

Yeah, the numbers certainly don't seem to line up very well for him. I wonder if we could work out some kind of re-structured deal with him?

Poppinga's salary isn't much different than Chillar's.

Yes, but Poppinga's supposed to get more sacks than Chillar. He didn't and Poppinga makes more money.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't we send in OLBs more than ILBs in our system? Plus, Poppinga gets more money than Matthews and Poppinga is Matthew's backup.

Interesting, so you think a rookie should make more than a veteran?

Clay is on a rookie contract.
Brady is on a veteran contract.

There's a big difference there. I don't know the specifics for either on their numbers for 2010, but I do believe that veteran's should be making more than those on a rookie contract. Hence, why the commissioner is liking the idea of capping the rookies salaries.

I think Poppinga's forte is special teams. And Poppinga had 1 sack, Chillar had 2.

Clay will make more than Brady because he produces, Brady hasn't. Why? I'm not sure. Maybe not enough opportunities? Not talented enough? I dunno.

I can't say I've ever been a fan of his, but I do like his intensity. And I think he's over paid... what made us give him that contract anyhow?

In my opinion there are multiple strikes working against Poppinga.

1. As mentioned ineffective blitzer.

2. He has proven that coverage isn't a strength either.

3. Last year, in the transition of a 3-4 backer.. he gave away the edge to easily.. our first responsibility in most 3-4 schemes on a running play is to establish the edge and pinch the running into the interior backers.. the teeth.. pull some film.. he got pinned in too frequently IMO.

4. His engage point is too tall in my opinion and he is very stiff in the hips... which effects the above.. he is not fluid in his breaks or transition.. which IMO, has a great deal of impact on issue 1 and 2.

5. He has to bring a tangible to the table that lesser priced backers bring.. without a cap this season.. that is even more true. His salary is working against him.. Chillar might make the same amount of coin.. but Chillar is a more versatile player than Pop.

Poppinga's real value IMO, is on special teams.. and unless he is noticeably better than Obi or a couple of the developmental rookies brought in.. I think his time in GB has run its course.

He is also a team moral booster. Players are always quoted as saying Poppinga is one of the funniest guys on the team.

But you are right, he is really "just a guy" out there on the field.
