After Bush, I'm not sure how some can be against Obama.

Ignorance ... gotta love it.

Are you calling the viewers of Fox racist rednecks? I like to watch the Factor and then immediately go watch Bill Maher on HBO and get totally different perspectives on the same issue. I poke fun of whoever takes either show's idealisms as gospel.

What's the difference between a bottle of vintage port and one of the major networks (Fox, CNN, etc)?

A vintage port is worth waiting for, since you know it's going to be a sublime experience. A news network -- well, you might as well spend your time drinking cheap port in the meantime, since you're never going to get anything of value from the networks no matter how long you wait.

Oh, yes, and, I know I'm weird, but the fact that Obama is not the first to skip out on the Tomb of the Unkonwn says more about the general quality (or lack thereof) of recent American presidents than it does excuse Obama's not going.

Several have asked whether the Arlington appearance is different from the appearance at some other Memorial Day activity. It's not Arlington that's different, it's the Tomb of the Unknown.

IMNSHO, the Tomb of the Unknown is a different kind of memorial. One that highlights a willingness to serve despite one's anonymity to those being served. When I go to a Memorial Day or similar celebration in my home town, the vets marching in the parade are personally connected to me. So are the people in the cemeteries. I may not know them myself, but my parents or my cousins do. Or I may know their widows or their cousins. At the very least, I'm going to recognize most of their names or recall seeing someone with that name on the street.

But those at the Tomb of the Unknown don't have that connection. No one knows who they were. We only know that they served, they protected, and they died. When a public official goes to the Tomb of Unknown, he or she is making a different statement than merely making another meet-and-greet with little plastic flags and limp handshakes.

And when he fails to make an appearance, he's also making a statement.

The wrong kind.

Great post, Wade.

+1 million if it were possible.

I can't wait for the day my wife and I get the honor of going to DC and visiting Arlington and all the other memorials. Will be a very hard but touching experience.

The concern is not whether or not Obama is right or wrong in going home. Would I prefer him there? Sure and for the reasons you state in your post, but I also won't judge him on this either. I don't see it as an issue like I would health care or his actions during the oil spill.

What I want to know is whether not going there makes him less of an American than say Ronald Reagen, who also apparently skipped out? Unfortunately the answer is yes for enough people and I would argue that is a bigger problem than Obama going home.

beast (30-Jan) : College Coaches wouldn't want that publicly, as it would hurt recruiting and they might not get the job.
beast (30-Jan) : I thought they were supposed to publicly announce them, at least the NFL ones. Hafley was from college, so I believe different rules.
Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Who knows who they're interviewing? I mean, nobody knew about Hafley and then out of nowhere he was hired
