Authorities Recover Body of Missing Swimmer in Goose Island

STODDARD, WI -- A body has been recovered at Goose Island Campground late Saturday evening, who is believed to be of the swimmer gone missing after a distress call around 5:45 p.m. Saturday.

STODDARD, WI -- Rescuers are searching for a man who went missing underwater after attempting a swim at the Goose Island Campground Saturday.
The La Crosse County Sheriff's Department says two men were canoeing and pulled up to a sandbar. One of the men decided to go swimming and left the sandbar. The swimmer then called out to his friend in distress. The friend saw the swimmer go underwater and did not see him again.
Dispatch says the call for a possible drowning came in just after 5:45 Saturday evening.
A MedLink helicopter was assisting with the rescue efforts soon after the call. Shelby Fire/Rescue, the DNR, Tri-State Ambulance, the La Crosse County Sheriff's Department and the La Crosse County Dive Unit are still at Goose Island searching for the man who went underwater.
The incident happened northwest of the main boat launching area on Goose Island.
Goose Island Campground is a popular attraction during holidays, such as Memorial Day.
