The coaches can talk all they want, but I see this as a demotion for Blackmon. I think that because of his injury history, they no longer have confidence in his ability to develop into a serviceable CB, so they're moving him to safety, where there is less need for speed and quick-cutting ability.

All the talk about the safety position being a way to utilize Blackmon's "ball skills" is pure BS, because a CB needs ball skills a lot more than a safety does. If the injuries are behind this move, it does not bode well for Blackmon's prospects for being an effective punt returner again.

Another bad sign that I see with this move is that Jarrett Bush just moved one step ahead in the CB rotation. I was hoping that Bush, not Blackmon, would be moved to safety. They toyed with that idea a bit last year but never really followed through with it, for whatever reason.

Bush is still listed as a CB/S on Packers.com. Blackmon is listed as a S, for what it's worth.

I think Bush was Safety, but with the injuries filled in as Nickel.

Al Harris has virtually no ball hawking skills at all and he's a very effective CB.

I have a hard time understanding how a CB needs ball hawking skills more than a Safety. CB is usually locked onto one guy or one side of the field. A Safety has a lot more field to protect than a CB and that makes me think a Safety has a tad more need for ball hawking than a CB.

I think we're talking about two different things. It's not a clearly defined idea, so I'll just tell you what I'm thinking of when I refer to "ball skills." I think of it as the ability to locate the ball when it is in the air and to react to it. It's difficult for CB's because they are the primary cover guys and often their back is to the play. It is a hard thing to teach; Ahmad Carroll, for example, just didn't have it. Jarrett Bush doesn't have it either.

Safeties do not need this skill as much because they generally cover slower receivers (TE's or RB's) or provide help coverage with the faster guys. They are usually facing the QB so they can see the ball earlier, giving them more time to react.

Ahh I see what you're saying. CB's have to have a quicker location of the ball than a Safety does.

I wonder if switching him back to WR was ever considered.

Blackmon is a great athlete and from the statements made also very bright. This will take awhile for him to do but he has value on the roster contributing on ST's so it's not a wasted move.

It would appear both Lee and Underwood are ahead of him at CB and he is too good of a football player to not try him at Safety and see how he does.

With this move I doubt we see him on the field much this year but he wasn't going to get much PT at corner anyhow so why not try it?

Unfortunately, I don't think he's a pro-level WR. He "took one for the team" when he played WR his last year at BC, because they needed weapons there. His strengths lie in his vision plus his defensive and ballhawking abilities, which is why safety may be a very good fit for him.

He actually had some good production when he switched to WR he had 51 catches for 763 yards and 4 TDs. That is pretty good production for somebody playing WR for the first time on an offense with no other weapons. If he had more than 1 year at WR I'm sure he would have made a decent prospect.

Oh yeah, I'm not saying he wasn't productive. I just don't know if he could hack it at the NFL level. Maybe if they designed some plays for him where he had a chance to catch it and then make something happen after (WR screens, etc.) but as an honest to goodness WR, I have my doubts. I'm probably his biggest fan too, so I'm not trying to insult the guy. I just don't think we would be playing him to his strengths.

I was really happy when the Packers drafted Blackmon and had high hopes for him. Too bad for his unjury bug. Hope he can stay healthy this year as I believe this is a very critical year for him.

I'm also hoping Shields is good enough to make the team as I believe he has a tremendous upside. I don't think he can be hidden on the p squad, somebody will sign him.
