Mike Vandermause column: Green Bay Packers winners, losers after NFL draft

by Mike Vandermause

If the NFL draft was nerve-wracking for the players coming out of college, how must the veterans on current rosters feel?

Draft picks show up with the sole focus of taking someones job, and its no different in Green Bay. There were clear winners and losers on the Packers' roster in light of the draft.

Winners

Brad Jones has to be the happiest player on the team. The starting outside linebacker job is his to lose after Aaron Kampman departed in free agency and General Manager Ted Thompson ignored that position in the draft. Jones chief competition will be a few undrafted free agents, who in most cases are lucky to make the team let alone contend for a starting role. Jones no doubt is pleased by the Packers loud, ringing endorsement.

Kicker Mason Crosby struggled last season with field-goal accuracy but it appears he will have no competition. Crosby hasnt reached his potential, but the Packers are giving him every opportunity to work out his kicking kinks.

Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Brett Swain can sleep easier these days. The Packers found no compelling reason to draft a receiver and seem satisfied with their backups behind starters Greg Jennings and Donald Driver.

The Packers are holding a table for Pat Lee and Will Blackmon, the oft-injured cornerbacks who have spent more time in the training room than on the field. But in a draft loaded with cornerbacks, Thompson chose to look the other way and put his faith in the potential of Lee and Blackmon. Second-year player Brandon Underwood also comes away from this draft with a smile on his face and a spot on the roster that is his for the taking.

Aaron Rodgers can close his eyes, take a deep breath and relax. No longer will the Packers quarterback have to look over his shoulder as oncoming pass rushers move in for the kill. No longer will Rodgers have his neck on a swivel and wonder when the next boom will be lowered. No longer will he fear for his life and well being if tackles Chad Clifton or Mark Tauscher cant play. The Packers have brought in line reinforcements and for the first time in a while have quality tackle depth.

Losers

Like a Donald Trump TV show, someone is going to get fired after the Packers drafted Penn State tight end Andrew Quarless in the fifth round, and it will likely come down to Donald Lee or Spencer Havner. Lee presumably makes too much money ($2 million salary) to serve as the third-string tight end behind starter Jermichael Finley and Quarless, so unless he is clearly better than the rookie, his days in Green Bay are numbered. Havner has his own issues after injuring himself in an offseason motorcycle accident.

Theres only so much room along the offensive line, and a couple of 300-plus pound veterans Allen Barbre and Breno Giacomini will be hard-pressed to make the final roster. Someone must go with the drafting of Bryan Bulaga and Marshall Newhouse.

Ahman Green returned in the middle of last season to back up Ryan Grant and in the process broke the Packers' all-time record for rushing yards. It was a nice going-away present for Green, an unrestricted free agent who still lives in the area and was hoping to receive a call from the Packers. His cell phone most likely wont ring after Thompson drafted running back James Starks.

The gig is up for 2007 first-round bust Justin Harrell after the Packers drafted not one but two defensive ends. Next year, Cullen Jenkins, who will become an unrestricted free agent, might be packing his bags as well. With the addition of defensive end Mike Neal in the second round, the Packers wont feel compelled to shell out big money to keep Jenkins.

Perhaps no player receives more criticism from fans than Jarrett Bush, who has been around since 2006. Its not entirely fair because Bushs strength is playing special teams, yet injuries have forced him to moonlight too often as a defensive back. The Packers traded up to draft safety Morgan Burnett in the third round, which could make Bush unneeded for secondary duty. Unless the Packers choose to keep him strictly for special teams, Bush is expendable.

I liked this article. Nothing earth-shattering, but still fun to look to the season ahead.

Bozz - Agreed. Nicely written.

Green should though get a call, a thank you for his many years of service with the Green Bay Packers and for it, possibly a job with the organization down the road if he's not happy teaching.

It's about time we replaced Harrell. As someone else said in another thread about a month ago, I don't hate the guy. I hate his injuries. Bad luck, but time to do what's right for the organization.

I loved Lee in '07 but he's been disappointing ever since. He would probably do better on another team.

Jones has stepped up nicely.

Rodgers is probably the biggest winner of all. His sack total should drop in half in '10 and that will also give us time to develop more down field passes, which is what Rodgers really likes to do.

I hope he's wrong about Jenkins.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

My gut tells me that re-signing Jenkins will be one of the top priorities this season.

Any player or players that are performing well for us, I do not want to see them on the "losers" column after a draft.

I'm one of those weird people who likes to have the best players, play. Call it crazy, but looking forward the future at the cost of good players is not smart. That's not to say we shouldn't be prepared and I'm thinking that's what you're saying. Have Tackles in the wings who develop better than our current tackles so we are solid at those positions for years to come.

This mentality just boggles my mind.

It reminds of how some teams give a QB a longer look because he can throw it through the rain without it getting wet. Crosby can boot the ball far and I think that's one of the few reasons they keep him on board.

Were any Kickers drafted? If not, that might be a sign that there's not too many out there to pick from.

Zero2Cool (2h) : Clifford hasn't been the same since losing 8
dfosterf (3h) : Sean Clifford would probably disagree
dfosterf (3h) : Canuck Cannon. Got a very good feeling about this

bboystyle (4h) : The Green Bay Packers on Monday signed Taylor Elgersma, the Canadian-born quarterback who tried out at the team’s rookie camp last weekend
beast (5h) : There were reports four days ago that the Packers were signing QB Taylor Elgersma, but no official action since
Zero2Cool (7h) : And for Ian Rapoport to announce Saints send 1st and 2nd rounder to Packers for Malik Willis.
dfosterf (7h) : *Elgersma*
dfosterf (7h) : Today would be a good day to discover the Pack signed Taylor Engersma, the Canadian QB
Zero2Cool (11-May) : It wasn't. He simply wanted his money back. They refused. Cops came. They gave him his money in end.
dfosterf (11-May) : Fortunately it doesn't sound like a big deal
Zero2Cool (10-May) : Elgton Jenkins Involved In Strip Club Dispute ... Cops Called To Mitigate

Martha Careful (8-May) : Chicago produces a pope before it produces a 4000 yard passing quarterback
wpr (8-May) : HAHAHA Mucky Comment of the day.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : According to reports, Mel Kiper is furious that Sanders wasn't selected as the new Pope
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Time taken to get picked:
Zero2Cool (8-May) : New Pope: 2 days | Shedeur Sanders: 3 days
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Collin Whitchurch @cowhitchurch · 1h Chicago got a pope before it got a QB to throw for 4,000 yards in a season.

Zero2Cool (5-May) : Ravens release Justin Tucker, err D. Watson Jr?
Zero2Cool (5-May) : Cardinals have signed TE Josiah Deguara.
Zero2Cool (5-May) : If I were to "Google" it, then I wouldn't read it in your words.
Martha Careful (5-May) : Yes, in the military S2’s work on IPB, PERCEC, PHYSEC and IO
dfosterf (4-May) : FYI civilian companies swipe the S2 designation from the military. S2 is the intelligence branch up to brigade level. G2 is division level.
dfosterf (4-May) : Google it. Make sure to tack NFL on it or you will get the military meaning
Zero2Cool (4-May) : S2?
beast (4-May) : Seems like the S2 has a love/hate relationship with professional scouts.
beast (4-May) : In theory, the S2 test how quickly a QBs brain can solve game like issues and how quickly they can do it.
dfosterf (4-May) : Are you gentlemen and at least one lady familiar with the S2 cognition
Zero2Cool (4-May) : Maybe there isn't an issue.
beast (4-May) : NFL really needs to fix their position labeling issue, but I don't think they care
Zero2Cool (1-May) : Packers did not activate the fifth-year options for linebacker Quay Walker, with the goal of signing him to a contract extension.
Zero2Cool (1-May) : Matthew Golden spoke with Randall Cobb before draft. Looked like chance encounter.
packerfanoutwest (1-May) : from a head left turn?
packerfanoutwest (1-May) : someone drunk?
Zero2Cool (1-May) : Unlikely.
dfosterf (30-Apr) : How long until Jeff Sperbeck's family sues John Elway ?
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : Packers are exercising the fifth-year option on DT Devonte Wyatt, locking in a guaranteed $12.9M for the 2026 season.
beast (30-Apr) : Sounds like P Luke Elzinga has a rookie try out opportunity from the Titans
