Green Bay Packers

Grade: B

Details: Sitting tight at the No. 23 overall pick, GM Ted Thompson intercepted surprise first-day faller Bryan Bulaga in round one. Though Bulaga's short arms and lack of elite upside ultimately hurt his stock, he was an incredible value and is ready-made for Green Bay's zone-blocking scheme after playing in a similar system under Kirk Ferentz at Iowa.

Second-round pick Mike Neal, a defensive tackle at Purdue, will have to learn to two-gap in Green Bay's 3-4 defense. He was a bit of a reach at No. 56 overall. Third-round safety Morgan Burnett is a ballhawk in the back end and was worth trading up for, particularly with division rival Chicago up one pick later and ready to pounce on the gifted free safety. Andrew Quarless is a rock-solid tight end, fellow fifth-rounder Marshall Newhouse is highly athletic, sixth-round pick James Starks was an explosive all-purpose tailback in Buffalo's spread offense, and seventh-rounder C.J. Wilson has five-technique size.

Thompson never fails to impress on draft day. If not for the relative reach on Neal, this class would flirt with an A grade.

I think this grade is more accurate then the "C's" and "C-'s" I've been seeing, which are usually at the bottom of the league in initial draft impressions. If this Neal kids becomes a force in the next couple years and at least one of the later round picks blossoms into a nice player, this will be a solid draft.

What does it mean, anyway? Whether or not the GM went with the general consensus?

The best example is the 2005 Packers draft. It got graded horribly. Nick Collins and Terrence Murphy where both graded as late 3rd to early 5th round picks by most people. Our front seven was horrible, but we didn't pick a LB untill the 4th round when we got Brady Poppinga. We didn't address an aging O-line untill the 5th, when we drafted Junius Coston.

Now, I'm not saying that this was our best draft ever, but Aaron Rodgers, Nick Collins, Terrence Murphy, Brady Poppinga and Junius Coston where some pretty good players for where they were picked. Aaron Rodgers and Nick Collins are obvious. Terrence Murphy looked like he had a lot of potential before that horrible injury. Poppinga is a solid LB. Not a bad 4th round pick. Junius Coston looked pretty good at LG before he got injured.

I didn't like this draft. I think we made some shitty decisions, most notably the 2nd round pick, coupled with the trade up in the 3rd and the loss of an EXTREMELY VALUABLE 4th round pick in the process. The whole thing felt bass-ackwards. I love the Bulaga pick, so I'm not flipping out.

I didn't like the 2005 draft at the time, either. I didn't like drafting Aaron--more accurately--I saw the value and steal aspect, but didn't think we "needed" him, other than Brett pulling his annual bullshit...

So, I fully recognize I can easily be so very dead wrong about things, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna stop having my very strong opinions.

This draft sucked, imo

I'll get back to that opinion as early as training camp, which may or may not change my mind... I usually do change my mind on these things.

Lol. I don't want to say that people can't have these opinions. It makes for great discussions and all. I just wouldn't take too much from these early grades. They just mean so little.

If all these grades are true, the Ravens should've won the last 10 Super Bowls, since Ozzie always gets an A.

Now, yes, he's a great GM and his picks usually are good, but his picks don't always pan out the way eveyone thinks.

I like this draft. Neal was an underachiever at Purdue, imo. Didn't take full advantage off the chances he got when he wasn't doubled etc. He has the ability to make our pass rush so much better. I could see him pushing Jolly out of the starting line up as soon as next year.

The potential on that guy is absolutely sick.

And I loved that trade up. A deep draft doesn't mean that you have to stock up on picks. It doesn't mean that we should draft a crapload of 3rd round talent in the 4th round. I like that we went up and got, what would last year have been, early 2nd round talent in the early 3rd.

I really believe that Burnett will take over for Bigby. If not by day 1, then somewhere halfway through the season.

I think Neal might have been there in the 4th round.

No sense in even discussing it---It's just what I personally think.

I like the player, I don't like where he was taken... I think it screwed up our draft---

I will be thrilled to bring my own mea culpa yet again, sooner-rather than later---

Just being "Non Packer fan PC"

C-

My grade. The only time I care about the media grades are when they dovetail with mine, like last year--- I was the first to post one, lol

Zero pointed out that Ron Wolf always said, "You want a player, you go get him."

Ron Wolf did an incredibly dumb thing in getting Brett-- The price he paid, etc. AT THE TIME.

This I have not changed my opinion on.

I'm not a Ron Wolf ball hugger. He got lucky, and so did Brett. I don't think he would have survived anywhere but Green Bay-- Just another opinion.

How many times in the past have we seen teams get huge grades for their draft and then when they do a 3 or 5 year review they just didn't pan out because they were either rushed into a starting spot or they just weren't a good fit for the team which selected them? There is no doubt that rankings has an aspect in all drafting, but what is often overlooked is whether or not the players fit the system they are coming to and are given the opportunity to succeed, as much as I hate the Colts I find that Polian does a good job of finding players that match what they want to do. I think Ted tries really hard to balance both as well.

Hmm....

Brent Wilbur said 3 possible starters. I like Wilbur's analysis better, not because he was the most positive, but he went pick by pick and based the picks on the players, not needs.

I understand BPA. You never know who is going to be injured. You just have to make moves before or after if someone goes down. That's the one flaw with BPA. I think Ted Thompson did go a hybrid BPA though, eliminating positions we absolutely don't need - QB, WR, P, K. Yes, I said P because I just hate seeing Punters wasting a draft kick. Punting is not that important and Crosby is a decent Kicker (kicking in GB sucks).

beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating

Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Right now it looks like the only prime worthy games are Det-Minny and KC-Denver (if Denver can clinch a wild card spot)
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : The entirety of week 18 being listed as flex is weird
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Matt LaFleur today says unequivocally "Ted Thompson had nothing to do with the drafting of Jordan Love."
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Apparently, the editing is what pieces comments together. That Ted thing ... fake news.
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : LaFleur "opportunity that Ted Thompson thought was too good to pass up"
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Jordan Love pick was Ted Thompson's idea.
Mucky Tundra (19-Dec) : Kyle Shanahan on signing De'Vondre Campbell as a FA last offseason: “We obviously made a mistake.”
packerfanoutwest (19-Dec) : Alexander’s last season with GB
Martha Careful (18-Dec) : if I were a professional athlete, I would probably look to see who the agent is for Kirk Cousins and then use him
beast (18-Dec) : $100 million fully guaranteed Kirk Cousins gets benched for rookie
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : a lower case b
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : The real lie is how beast capitalized his name in his message while it's normally spelled with
packerfanoutwest (18-Dec) : haha that's a lie
beast (17-Dec) : Despite what lies other might tell, Beast didn't hate the Winter Warnings, it felt refreshing to Beast for some reason.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : whiteout uniforms in general are pretty lame and weak. NFL greed at it's worst
Martha Careful (17-Dec) : The Viking uniforms, the whiteout uniforms specifically absolutely suck
beast (17-Dec) : Thanks Zero2Cool, looks a lot better now
beast (17-Dec) : Seems like someone has a crush on me, can't stop talking about me
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : Should be gooder now. The forum default theme went to goofy land.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : What the hell
packerfanoutwest (17-Dec) : yeah beast hates the Winter Warning Unies
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : WR Odell Beckham Jr is officially a free agent after clearing waivers.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : Packers are 6th in sacks.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : RB David Montgomery will undergo season-ending knee surgery.
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Dan Campbell on onside kick with 12 minutes left: In hindsight, wish I didn’t do that
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : They have that whole 12th man thing so ...
