I'm looking forward to getting past the first round, because chances are high I'm gonna be unhappy with the pick.

I've decided I won't get mad at the first round pick unless its a WR or QB. I'll reserve any unhappiness until after I see the results of the first three rounds.

(Though I'm sort of expecting I'll be frustrated by then...again.)

Adding to that, what scouts/FO guys aren't lying when they talk about a player pre-draft?

I'm not saying I know Mays will be a good player - but when the opinions are as varied as they seem to be in his case, I trust neither extreme. Also, I have to wonder how he was seen as a top-10, all-world safety last year and this year I'm hearing he can't even play the position.

Make no mistake about it: If a Bulaga or a Williams is there @ 23, or if they move up to get one of them, I'm a happy camper. I don't want Mays over every other possibility, but if the picks go as expected I don't think a LT prospect worth a 1st round pick will be there. So, if that plays out, and Graham is there? Then I want him, not Mays. But again, I'm not expecting him to be there. So now we're down to DEs that'll need to transition to OLB (and I've heard there are concerns and questions about all of them, given that transition) and corners that wouldn't be ranked anywhere near the 1st round in other drafts. If that's what's out there, I'd take Mays in a heartbeat. I'm not all-in for the guy, but depending on how the draft shakes out, he could easily qualify as BPA in an area of need.

I see Mays as an "enforcer" type, not a "cover type" safety. I KNOW he is uniquely large and fast...

This is an excellent article on the evolution of the safety position. I am quoting the section that gets to some of my "concerns" regarding Taylor Mays, but do take the time and trouble to click the link for a good read about the position outside of my "selected/cherry-picked" quote.

Philly is looking for a safety also, prompting them to be looking at them...

Philly.com Safety has become a critical position in the NFL

..."The evolution of NFL offenses has made the [safety] position so important," said Jaworski's MNF boothmate, Jon Gruden. "Look at the tight end. Now the tight ends are lined up as receivers. They're essentially oversized wide receivers. Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates. Just look around the league. Everyone's got one now. So that safety oftentimes has to be able to cover the big, physical tight end.
"And all of those halfbacks are becoming specialty route-runners and receivers. I can't tell you how many balls the tailback position accumulated last year. So, not only does the safety have to potentially cover your third wideout, he's got to be able to cover tight ends and backs, blitz, play zone, and make all the audibles and checks on defense. It's become harder and harder to find the well-rounded safety. But there are a couple in this year's draft that certainly fit my bill."
Gruden is referring to Eric Berry and Earl Thomas, who are the two top-rated safeties in this week's draft. Both are certain first-round picks and could be only the second pair of safeties since 1991 to be top-15 picks in the same draft.
While they aren't quite the jaw-dropping physical specimens as the draft's other potential first-round safety, Taylor Mays, both are playmakers with better cover skills than the 6-3, 231-pound Mays.
"Your safeties now are those hybrid guys, those 'tweener guys," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "You don't have many of those big monsters, those 220-pounders. There's not a lot of them around, and the few that are have a tough time doing what you need your safeties to do in today's game."
If this were 10 years ago, Mays probably would be rated above both the 5-11 1/2, 211-pound Berry and the 5-10 1/4, 208-pound Thomas on most draft boards. But it's not 10 years ago.

You know what the thing is? If you have a good cover safety on one side, you can go and get yourself an in the box, physical guy like Mays. Makes your safety play a little more predictable, but they're great specialists at what they do.

I'm afraid that the Packers organization might think that same way. Bigby has been the starter for quite a while and he doesn't have elite range or great man to man skills.

I'm hoping that we won't go anywhere close to Mays. I'd rather have someone later on. Maybe go after Burnett in the first if you trade down a little.

I should clarify: I don't think Mays is the best safety in the draft. I do think he's the best safety that has a rat's chance in hell of being available at pick 23. Berry would be a dream pick, but he's likely gone in the top 10, and personally I'm not entirely convinced that Thomas is a lot better than Mays - I also think he'll be gone by the time the Pack have a chance.

To be perfectly clear, I'm a fan of picking Mays, assuming the following (none of which could turn out to be the case by the time the Pack are on the clock):

- All the good bets @ LT are gone (meaning that guys like Charles Brown* are what's left).
- Guys who are likely to transition well to OLB (Kindle) are also gone, leaving projects who may or may not do well with the transition.
- The top 2 corners are gone, as well as Berry and Thomas.

I've seen several mocks fall this way - I do realize that means almost nothing as far as how things will actually play out - and if that's what comes to pass, IMO Mays is the guy (though as I've said too many times before, I don't think he'll be there @ 23, either).

*I'm liking Mr. Brown more as time passes - I'm not sure why, though.

I'm hoping the Packers will pass on Mays if he is there at the 23 spot.
I'd rather trade down than take him in the 1st round.

I'm with Rockmolder. I want the Packers to draft Jerry Hughes. We need another pass rusher to pressure the good QBs we face.
