Why let Jackson go? He's cheap and dollar for dollar, he produces. He's good at picking up blocks and when healthy is a decent runner. Not good, but decent.

I like Westbrook. But look at his price tag.

Look, man...I'm not even convinced we should keep Grant let alone Jackson, but to each his own. And as for what Finny said: yeah, I agree. We need to focus on our O-line and secondary and I'm not really worried that we won't. What does worry me though is just sitting on these lukewarm backs we have and hoping for production.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

Grant's stats are ok, so I guess you don't like him for not getting first downs that often.

Could it have something to do with us having to work for 20 yards almost every set of downs because of offensive line penalties?

It is only preliminary talks and it is still early in the process, but the Green Bay Packers have contacted free-agent RB Brian Westbrook.

i dislike him because he's one-dimensional. he's a one-cut, downhill runner--sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. i just don't see "genius" when i watch him. then again, in my lifetime we've really never had anybody just completely sick at RB.

I agree with Twinkiegorilla.

1. Green Bay is not a running offense. This is the truth.

2. Grant is not Barry Sanders. So what - see item 1.

3. Westbrook wouldn't get much in the way of touches - he'd be a 3rd down option and they might mix it up a bit on occasion and have him in the backfield with Grant occasionally.

4. Ahman Green is also a good, older back - the fact that he was a Packer doesn't mean that's the only reason some folks want him back. He's as valid an option as Westbrook, really, other than Westbrook's greater pass-catching abilities.

5. Jackson probably can't get a break in GB at this point, so I'll just hope he gets another, better opportunity somewhere else. Great kid, but his timing was awful in terms of injuries.

6. As long as he checks out physically and is willing to take a drastic cut from the pay he's used to, I'm cool with Westbrook. Seems like a great guy, and is certainly a very skilled back.

7 (final point). What the Packers need to do is invest in a guy like McCluster. Just admit that they're a passing team and pick up a fast kid that will work in that passing offense.

Here's the deal.

The Packers are a passing team, and the only time they'll be a running team is if they finally find a rhythm with it. It won't happen with Grant alone.

Need proof? Just look at last year. Once Ahman Green was added, Grant took his breathers and was undoubtedly more effective.

It also helps that at the time, Green lost a lot of speed, but he was just as determined to gain yardage as anybody else on the field. I don't know about you all, but when I watched Ahman Green last season, he was definitely more than serviceable, because he definitely gave the running game an explosive boost.

Brandon Jackson, on the other hand, didn't do anything in terms of running last year. He picked up blocks. That's about it. But this is sort of a good thing. When he was drafted, he couldn't pick up blocks for crap. Now he can. That will work to his advantage.

If the Packers sign Brian Westbrook, there are two scenarios that are likely to occur, but the bottom line is that he will be the third-down guy.

Scenario 1.
- Ryan Grant remains starter. Brian Westbrook is primary 3rd down back.
- Brandon Jackson is traded/cut before the season begins.
- Packers draft a RB at or after Round 3.

Scenario 2.
- Ryan Grant remains starter. Brian Westbrook is primary 3rd down back.
- Brandon Jackson remains on roster.
- Packers decide not to add anymore RB's on roster. A Westbrook injury would help Jackson has Westbrook would coach him.

As a third-down RB, Westbrook would be extremely effective and his time on the sideline will be spent talking to Grant and whoever the third string RB is. Signing him to a 1-2-year contract won't lead us to cap hell.

Of course, we can also do what we did with Anthony Smith. Have him have an excellent pre-season only to cut him.

my 2 cents:

Keep Grant, let Green and Jackson go, get Westbrook, draft an RB in the 2nd.

Im going to add my input - just got done watching 5 games last season dallas, 2nd viks, 2nd chicago, steelers, 49ers ... and jackson did good in all of those (for the roll he got). Great ball catcher and nice RB ie could often break tackles or plow through people unlike grant whom often gets tripped up by the first defender.

Jackson kicks butt ... westbrook may be good also but not sure the price tag. I wouldnt mind trying him out thou ... I wasnt that impressed with green either last year; not bad. But if westbrook is better rather go with him.

ie this might mean we wouldnt have to draft a earlier RB then and could stick with other needs.

They say the RB position is the easiest to go from college to the pros so we could easily pick up a RB next year after we win the SB šŸ˜‰

Ok guys quit with the smack talk of jackson - btw his stats are similar to westbrook and jackson was out pretty much the 1st 1/2 of the season due to a high ankle sprain.

jackson blocks very well if you noticed and catches the ball very well and runs with it.

ie we need to develope the screen better - we would have less sacks then

Brandon Jackson has one huge negative dogging him.. availability. It has been the death of many a career.. the inability to stay off the trainers table.

Every football player right down to high school has to play beat up at times.. it is the nature of the game.. and those that can't stay on the field get left behind. Plain and simple.

So on Westbrook.. if he has a narrow window of assignments and duty.. I could see him helping this ball club.. but no more than 5 to 10 touches a game.. and a contract that would reflect that contribution.
