Nice vid, IronMan.
The sad thing is not everyone who went into debt is like this couple. To make this clear, I don't have any sympathy whatsoever for the yuppie couple who has the his and her SUV, the 2500 sq foot house on a lot the size of a postage stamp, the TV that is as large as a whale, and is broke.
But a lot of us who have gone through financial hell were doing ok until we got laid off, and it took months before we found something else. In my case, it wasn't until 2009 when I finally made what I made in 2002. My career went to India and pretty much never recovered.
A lot of the manufacturing jobs went overseas in the 70s and 80s. Most of these folks don't have college degrees and it took them years to make what they did at those jobs, which were decent jobs. In that time, they ended up going into debt.
Then in the 90s and 00s, they started outsourcing white collar jobs. A lot of us white collar workers are former blue collar workers who got into the white collar world specifically to avoid this trap.
Sure, a lot of it was greed. But a lot of good, hard-working folk are responsible and had bad luck. I'm not even including the people who did everything right, then had a serious health issue.
As economically conservative as I claim I am, I do feel horrible for those who are unfortunate, and realize that a big part of life is dumb luck and being in the right or wrong place at the right or wrong time.
