Green Bay Packers Offensive tackle: The Packers are trying to wring everything they can out of Chad Clifton(notes) and Mark Tauscher(notes), but the message is clear: If Green Bay's potentially dominant offense is to get the team to a Super Bowl, quarterback protection must be a more consistent element. The good news is that Aaron Rodgers has learned that he can't hold onto the ball forever, which certainly helps. The bad news: As efficient as Ryan Grant(notes) may be, he's no great shakes as a blocking back. If the Pack could score one of the second-level tackles with the 23rd pick USC's Charles Brown and Maryland's Bruce Campbell come to mind it would certainly help.

From the article 10 teams that are 1 pick away from the Super Bowl. Packers are mentioned, so I included us.

Comments?

I personally think we also need some more pressure on the opposing QB, so we're two people away. Watching clips from the Cardinals game though, Warner torched our backfield as well, but I'm still not decided if that's a personnel issue or a coaching issue.

What really bothered me in '09 besides our OL sucking was when we lost, we failed to generate much pressure on the opposing QB. Both Favre and Ben R were pretty much untouched by us, and they often had time for longer routes to develop.

You know, we were 4 wins away from the Superbowl.

No NFL rookie alone will bring us an improvement margin of 4 games - that is simply asking too much. Even a rookie of CMIII's caliber is not going to result in a 4 win improvement. Maybe another player like Woodson last year gets you that improvement, but no rookie will play close to the level C-Wood played at last year.

We desperately need another pass-rushing OLB and a young talented OT. Put simply: get to the QB. It doesn't mean you have to sack him, but rough him up! Kampy could at least knockdown the QB... with him gone you've got a major need at OLB. Also, with Cliffy's injury history the past couple of years, you know he is going to miss games this year. You need to fill fill the position sooner than later because relying on Lang to bail you out will only get you so far - especially if he wins the LG or RT spot.

Then we need depth at DE - when your two top DEs play 75-80 percent of the snaps on D.... you've got a problem. Raji's growth should ease things, but with Jolly facing the trial, and Harrell being Harrell, the Packers desperately need some depth that can come in and give you some quality snaps.

Furthermore, there is Safety. Behind Collins and Bigby, you've got... no one. If you think Derrik Martin is a viable option as the third safety, then you really need to go back and watch game tape of when Martin played. Ted needs to go out there and get a young rookie on draft day because we may be in a world of hurt if injuries hit that position.

My point is simple: no one player is going to simultaneously fill our needs on Defense and Offense. Maybe a stud OLB can help you cover up your lack of depth at safety, and reduce the snaps your entire D (including the DEs) are on the field. But you've still got to deal with the fact that you need someone because you know Cliffy is going to break down.

I trust Ted's strategy, and think he could draft at any position (except QB, WR, and ILB) in the first couple of days and fill a position of need. That surely says a lot about how much we need to become a Superbowl contender: we need more than one pick. Add Ted's reluctance to dip into Free Agent waters, and he's basically got one way to fix the problem areas on this team. It may mean relying an awful lot on getting in a good draft class, but that's what happens when you have a philosophy like Ted's.

one ot will get us to the super bowl? serious, that's bs. a rookie ot can't be that much of an upgrade over clif to go to the super bowl. we need a passrushing olb, a safety and a cornerback essentially more ... by far.

Last years team could have made the superbowl. It isn't as simple as add a few players and that = so many more wins. All that matters is getting the right guys in the right spots and having them execute at the right times. We don't NEED to fill S, OLB, OT, RB, etc... to get to the superbowl, those spots may help but this is still a good team.

I get what you are saying, and to some extent I agree. But you can't ignore us needing to fill the S / OLB spots (for example) because those are areas that we are lacking quality talent.

Our starters may be good enough - that I'd agree with. But in a 16 week season, starters often get hurt. That's when your depth gets tested. Our depth, quite frankly, could use an infusion of talent at the above mentioned positions of S and OLB especially.

In the NFL, if you're not improving, then you're going backwards. I understand some of the burden of that improvement has to be on our 1st and 2nd year players, but you have to bring in some talent to replace those players that simply aren't good enough.

IMO the pack could of been SB champs last year - we just need to do the best we can is all.

that and cut penalties and limit those sacks and we are gtg IMO.

It's not possible for 10 teams to be 1 pick away from the Super Bowl, obviously, so it only makes sense that we're on this list, as we're one of the most ready teams.

I personally think that we're 3 picks away from being an as good as flawless team. That's a good OT, a good S and a good OLB.

That said, you don't need a flawless team. Just look at the final 4 last year. The Jets had a very mediocre passing game. The Saints don't have an elite front 7 on the defense. The Colts D-line and LBers are undersized against the run, their CBs are pretty mediocre and they don't really have a running game. The Vikings secondary is, well, pretty damn bad.

With a bit of luck, we ARE one pick away from the Super Bowl. It's not an OT, though.

Having a good pass rush makes up for your flaws on defense. Bigby won't need the speed and range in coverage if we can get to the QB pretty fast. He proved that in 2007, when we have an elite pass rushing D-line. QBs will lead their guys into dangerous areas, just getting the ball off, where Bigby can make the hit. They'll throw ill-advised balls. Or just get sacked.

If we can find an OLB who can contribute on a high level right away, our problems at S will suddenly not seem to be as big as they where this year.

That leaves the O-line and that's where the luck part comes in. If we luck out and everyone (especially Clifton) stays healthy, our O-line will be good. Not just servicable, but good. And that might be even more than you can say about the '96 Packers.

I think the Packers need future OTs as the starters are older and may not be able to be 100% for a whole season and the depth there has yet to step up...

Also another Safety... the Packers have Collins but Bigby doesn't have a lot of speed to lose so a minor injury to his legs could stop him and Martin is good at least as a STer but they need someone else who can start if Bigby or Collins gets banged up...

A 3rd down RB and a return in case Blackmon can't stay healthy would be nice too...

I do think if you're not improving, you're going backwards in this league. Every team does have weaknesses. The Saints allowed a lot of points last year and still managed to win, simply because in the 4th Q, they somehow pulled off games one way or another. How many times last year did they go into half time losing and came back with a victory? Even the SB, I knew they'd win when they entered the half losing.

They also had fire and aggression to make up for a mediocre D. Yes, they had a mediocre D. They were #20 in the NFL out of 32 teams in Points Allowed. Yet they found ways to win games.

So yes, you don't need a complete team. You will have weaknesses. You just have to be able to compensate for the weaknesses with your strengths.

We allow too many points in big games. Our run D is superb, but against elite QBs, we get smoked. 51 points against the Cardinals. Warner threw 5 TDs and we only sacked him once.

I think we need OL for depth, but to increase our odds of winning the big one, we need to pressure the opposing QBs. 1 sack against Warner. 51 points allowed. 0 sacks against Brett Favre. 68 points allowed in 2 games. What was really weird is looking back against the Steelers, we got Big Ben 5 times, but he still threw 3 TDs and 500+ yards. Yes, 500+. That's not a misprint.

So 2 things on D - our secondary needs to be improved and our pass rush needs to be improved. And yes, it's partly due to the coaching (or maybe just inexperience in the scheme as it's a new scheme) as we'd see people out of place and experienced QBs knew how to exploit that.

On O - We're solid in QB, WR, TE, and RB. Well, maybe bring in another RB for depth. We may seen Green back. Hopefully Jackson is 100% this year. We gotta have more depth on our OL though.

And yes, good point Beast. We could use a returner if Blackmon's not healthy. Returners are always that wild card that sometimes are the backbreaker in games.

beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.

beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
