http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/09/08/silvas-super-bowl-pick/

My Super Bowl XLV pick has been Baltimore-Green Bay since May, and the ensuing months have provided few reasons to waver.

The Packers' offense has the look of an indefensible juggernaut. 23-year-old Jermichael Finley, who led Green Bay in receiving yards, touchdowns, and pass targets in the final eight games of last season, will be the most productive tight end in football if he stays healthy. Aaron Rodgers doesn't miss, and his protection is improved with the return to health of tackles Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher, complemented by the first-round selection of 2009 Big Ten Offensive Lineman of the Year Bryan Bulaga. With Rodgers given more time to throw, Greg Jennings will dominate deep as Finley, Donald Driver, and James Jones control the seams and underneath game.

The defense has question marks in the secondary, but reinforcements are on the way in the form of stalwart cornerback Al Harris and hard-hitting safety Atari Bigby, both eligible for return from the PUP list in Week Seven. Back-four shortcomings will be made less apparent by an improved pass rush. Outside linebackers Clay Matthews and Brad Jones are bound for advancement in their second years. New nose tackle B.J. Raji can also collapse the pocket, and Green Bay already has the run-stopping part down, having led the league in rush defense last season.

An underrated development to Green Bay's preseason was the emergence of No. 2 tailback Brandon Jackson. Jackson, predictably slow to develop after starting for just a half-season at Nebraska, piled up 89 yards and a score on 12 touches against Indianapolis' first-team defense in the third exhibition game after Ryan Grant's concussion. If Grant goes down in the regular season, Mike McCarthy's team can use the Next Man Up philosophy, and they'll be just fine.

Perhaps the most well-run franchise in football, the Baltimore Ravens have worked the trade and free agency markets to precision. G.M. Ozzie Newsome added new dimensions to coordinator Cam Cameron's offense by bringing aboard powerful run-after-catch receiver Anquan Boldin, whose skillful blocking fits perfectly the Baltimore mentality. Late-camp pickup T.J. Houshmandzadeh is quality insurance for 36-year-old wideout Derrick Mason at the very least. Houshmandzadeh, 33, has plenty left in the tank, coming off a 79-catch season for the passing-inept Seahawks.

It all adds up to a potential breakout season for quarterback Joe Flacco. The focal point of the offense, however, remains versatile tailback Ray Rice. Still just 23, Rice topped 2,000 all-purpose yards last season, and will only get better. Like the Packers, the Ravens have a more-than-viable running back replacement in Willis McGahee, who would start for at least 10 other teams.

Baltimore annually fields a top-five defense, and this year will be no different. While Newsome upgraded the offense via trades and signings, he dedicated the first day of draft weekend to defensive youth injections. If venerable nose tackle Kelly Gregg gets hurt, the Ravens can smoothly transition to mammoth second-round pick Terrence Cody. Sergio Kindle's fractured skull was unfortunate, but he'll add pass rush off the edge once healthy.

Middle linebacker Ray Lewis still fills hard against the run, Terrell Suggs looked revitalized in the preseason after a disappointing campaign, and the August 31 swindle of playmaking cornerback Josh Wilson helps to bolster a secondary that's received good news with the quick recoveries of Fabian Washington and Lardarius Webb from ACL surgery. Tom Zbikowski will ably hold down the fort until All-Pro free safety Ed Reed (hip) comes off the PUP list.

Ultimately, though, the Packers are the strongest, deepest, most talented team in football. If these two ball clubs do battle in February, look for Green Bay to take home the Vince Lombardi trophy by a score of 31-23.

I kind of went 'huh' reading that last part.

I'm not sure what to make of the fact that the national media are more optimistic about the Packers than Packer fans are. Did you read the chat in the Press Gazette yesterday? Nothing but bitching from the fans:

http://packersnews.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20100908/PKR01/309070154/Read-the-transcript-Mike-Vandermause-talks-Packers

I think it is safe to say that the Packers are in the mix this year, along with the Saints, Cowboys, and Vikings in the NFC, and that's the best you can hope for going into the season. There are no dominant teams anymore.

This writer does lose some credibility when he writes that Ryan Grant suffered a concussion in the Indy game. The concussion happened two weeks before that, against the Browns.

I think Packer fans are cautiously optimistic. We look at the team under a deafening microscope where as the media touches base on 32 teams and not too thoroughly. That is evidenced by the "writer" who said Charlie Peprah was a "signification addition" to the roster.

Mucky Tundra (2h) : Getting help would have been nice, but helping ourselves should always be the plan
beast (3h) : Too bad Seahawks couldn't beat Vikings
bboystyle (3h) : We just need to win Monday night and were in

Mucky Tundra (6h) : Other scenario was Falcons+Rams losses
Mucky Tundra (6h) : Needed a Falcons loss for a Seahawk loss to clinch
buckeyepackfan (6h) : Am I wring in saying if Tge Vikings beat The Seahawks, The Packers clinch?

beast (21-Dec) : So far the college playoffs have sucked... One team absolutely dominates the other
beast (21-Dec) : Well even if you weren't positive towards a guy, you wouldn't nessarily want to tell the media that (if they don't know about it)
Martha Careful (21-Dec) : I think MLF want Love to look past the end half issues, and feel good about his play. Our coaches generally keep a very positive tone.
beast (21-Dec) : I think a great running game will do that for most QBs
packerfanoutwest (21-Dec) : Coach Matt LaFleur has said quarterback Jordan Love is playing the best football of his career.
beast (21-Dec) : Oh, that's how you keep beating buckeye, with cheating
Zero2Cool (20-Dec) : There is a rule that if your name starts with 'b' you lose 15 points. Hey, I don't make the rules, I just enforce them!
wpr (20-Dec) : and then there is Beast. Running away with it all.
beast (20-Dec) : As of tonight, 3 way tie for 2nd in Pick'em, that battle is interesting!
beast (20-Dec) : Lions vs Vikings could be the main last game as it could determine division winners or #1 vs #2 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Or if KC needs to win for the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : Right now it looks like the only prime worthy games are Det-Minny and KC-Denver (if Denver can clinch a wild card spot)
Mucky Tundra (20-Dec) : The entirety of week 18 being listed as flex is weird
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Matt LaFleur today says unequivocally "Ted Thompson had nothing to do with the drafting of Jordan Love."
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Apparently, the editing is what pieces comments together. That Ted thing ... fake news.
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : LaFleur "opportunity that Ted Thompson thought was too good to pass up"
Zero2Cool (19-Dec) : Jordan Love pick was Ted Thompson's idea.
Mucky Tundra (19-Dec) : Kyle Shanahan on signing De'Vondre Campbell as a FA last offseason: “We obviously made a mistake.”
packerfanoutwest (19-Dec) : Alexander’s last season with GB
Martha Careful (18-Dec) : if I were a professional athlete, I would probably look to see who the agent is for Kirk Cousins and then use him
beast (18-Dec) : $100 million fully guaranteed Kirk Cousins gets benched for rookie
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : a lower case b
Mucky Tundra (18-Dec) : The real lie is how beast capitalized his name in his message while it's normally spelled with
packerfanoutwest (18-Dec) : haha that's a lie
beast (17-Dec) : Despite what lies other might tell, Beast didn't hate the Winter Warnings, it felt refreshing to Beast for some reason.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : whiteout uniforms in general are pretty lame and weak. NFL greed at it's worst
Martha Careful (17-Dec) : The Viking uniforms, the whiteout uniforms specifically absolutely suck
beast (17-Dec) : Thanks Zero2Cool, looks a lot better now
beast (17-Dec) : Seems like someone has a crush on me, can't stop talking about me
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : Should be gooder now. The forum default theme went to goofy land.
Zero2Cool (17-Dec) : What the hell
packerfanoutwest (17-Dec) : yeah beast hates the Winter Warning Unies
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Okay I'm glad to know it's not just something happening to me lol
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Zero, did you copy the Packers uniforms from last night and white out the board?
beast (16-Dec) : Oh crap, is the board going to the Winter Warning Uniforms too?!? It's all white on white right now!
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : WR Odell Beckham Jr is officially a free agent after clearing waivers.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : Packers are 6th in sacks.
Zero2Cool (16-Dec) : RB David Montgomery will undergo season-ending knee surgery.
Mucky Tundra (16-Dec) : Dan Campbell on onside kick with 12 minutes left: In hindsight, wish I didn’t do that
