Don't rule T.J. Lang out at LG so quickly. That's probably what most teams viewed him at as a prospect last year.

Let T.J. Lang watch, learn and develope instead of throwing him into a starting role he may or may not be able to handle.

Fot the first time since Ted Thompson became GM Tha Packers can actually start a season with the same 5 guys, at least 4 of 5 with the expectation that Spitz will replace College, that ended the previous season.

I don't care how old Clifton and Tauscher are, they are offensive Tackles, that is where you want your experience.

I said it in two other threads, these guys need to know they are the starters, there should be NO COMPETITION at anytime, they need to know that, barring injury, the same guy is going to be lining up beside them every week.

Let Lang and the other young guys fight it out for the backup spots, this is not the year to be playing musical chairs, or experimenting along the O-line.

What's the old saying "if you have 2 starting qb's, you have no starting qb's"
Well if you have 8 or 9 starting lineman, you have complete chaos.

Whatever Tausch got for his contract, I would say he earned it. I would sooner see us overpay him a little than alot of other UFA's or rookies. He saved our butt last year. Also, remember he was coming off injury last year and likey will be better this year despite age.

What the Packers do in the draft will put a big telling on what they're plans for Lang actually are. If Green Bay takes two tackles within their first four picks, that tells me they're looking at Lang as a potential option at left guard. If they grab a guard and a tackle or just a tackle, I think they're looking at Lang as an option at tackle then.

Weren't you the same fella who blasted Colledge for the same thing? I believe you said to buck up and deal with it. Maybe it was someone else.

Either, I agree. Put a player in a position, don't mess with them.

Tauscher was a Packer before Bedard left Miami to write about the Packers instead of the Dolphins.

Tauscher went years without ever getting a penalty. He is a good locerroom guy and has never caused a bit of trouble.

He came in and played cold right after rehab last season. With a full offseason program he will be more like his old self.

Tauscher has always been profesional and gets penalized far less than Clifton who is good for one false start a half.

Tauscher missed out on big money for his previous long contract after hurting his knee in New Orleans. I don't think he is overpaid but if you think he is consider that he was under paid for many more years. This makes up for some of the past underpay.

The Milwaukee paper is on a pendulum. Players and staff are great or they terrible and the same writer will say both within 2 weeks. The worst guy to suffer from it other than Ted Thompson is Darren Colledge. He is great gifted player, then he should be cut, then he is a great player.

In an uncapped year when there is plenty of money Tauscher is a good reliable loyal player and a good investment.

If Breno looks good in camp this whole things sorts itself out.

If they think Breno will be ready to start at RT one day (maybe 2011) then Tauscher starts at RT with Breno his backup.

Then Lang beats out Spitz and Colledge at LG.

That gives us a line of Clifton, Lang, Wells, Sitton, Tauscher.

Breno is backup RT, a rookie draft pick is backup LT. Spitz, Colledge and EDS back up the interior line with possibly one of Colledge and Spitz traded to make room for 2nd draft pick.

But if Breno looks garbage we'll probably need Lang to be at backup/future RT and everything's up in the air.

More from Greg Bedard on the subject:

JSOnline blog

I blogged on Monday afternoon about why I disagree with the re-signing of Mark Tauscher IF he's handed the starting right tackle job. (We're not going to know for sure until August -- despite what anybody says in the interim -- and I wasn't going to wait for then to discuss it)

If he's here as a veteran backup? Awesome. Smart move. Packers have protected themselves. But it's time for somebody else to start at right tackle.

Breno Giacomini is entering his third season. If he can't play, why is he here? T.J. Lang proved worthy of getting a shot. If those guys aren't given the opportunity to compete, the Packers will go another year of not knowing what they have on the roster. The Packers have to move on at some point.

Former Packers vice-president of player finance Andrew Brandt has his take on the Packers shelling out big money to Ryan Pickett, Nick Collins and Tauscher.

Brandt makes a lot of good points, chiefly that other players are going to wonder "where's mine?"

There are still a few players whose contracts have not been addressed and who are now asking, What about me? as they form a line at the door. The low rumble of discontent may pick up a notch soon in Green Bay.

I made this point on Twitter after CB Tramon Williams was tendered at the first- and third-round pick level, which basically paid him the same as Collins before he was extended: for every contract action, there is an equal and opposite reaction in the locker room. Of course, that got me a bunch of angry Tweets about how I was putting discontent in the heads of players and I didn't know what I'm talking about.

You guys have NO IDEA how much players compare their deals to other players on the team, down to workout bonuses. I once had a Dolphins player, after congratulating his teammate on a new contract, two seconds later turn his back and whisper to me, "That guy is getting double what I get for a workout bonus. That's B.S. I'm calling my agent. I'm right, right? I'm much better than him, right?" I don't have enough fingers to count how many times I've had similar discussions with players.

And when players aren't thinking about where they rank contract-wise in the locker room, they pay their agents a lot of money to think about it.
Don't think players aren't going to wonder about how Pickett is getting $7 million a year to play less than 50% of the defensive snaps. And don't try using the, 'That's the market for a 3-4 nose tackle' rationale. Players don't care about that stuff.

Disagree, however, with Brandt's assessment that having Clifton and Tauscher back in the fold "allows the Packers to look elsewhere at the top of the upcoming draft since they did not want to use a high pick to draft a tackle."

Maybe the Packers think that way -- and I've heard that as well -- but their tackle situation is still a mess and it would not be prudent for them to eliminate OT from their early draft board. Not looking for tackles early in the draft is why the Packers were forced to overpay this year for tackles in the first place.

Having Clifton around, as I said when he was re-signed, allows the Packers to target a specific second-tier tackle that they really feel can play the left side with development. But they must find a future left tackle. The Packers still have no one capable behind Clifton. Even remotely.

Here is the NFP article that Brandt wrote that Bedard is referencing:

I would rather a player be a G/T on one side than a LT/RT. It is much harder IMO to adjust to making that successful drop step that a Tackle needs with the left foot and then switch to the other side and do it with the Right.

I say pick a position, then once there, keep him on that side. Don't switch side unless it is a emergency after multiple injuries.

Don't disagree... personally.. if we have a left tackle prospect on the roster.. leave him at right tackle.. but I don't think we have to reach on a left tackle just to put one on the roster... IMO, Lang with a camp under him will be just fine at the left tackle.. yes I think he has that much potential despite Foster he is too small jabber.

Watching tape on the kid last spring.. as much as I could find and was overly impressed with the kid.. thought it was an outright steal where we drafted him... so I really want the kid to be dropped into a role and allowed to blossom... none of this nonsense of trying to get him to learn the different footwork and reads each position on the line requires and have it slow down or hamper his development.
