As things stand we have 9 OLinemen on the books, the same number we had through last season.

If we draft 2 more (which seems likely) that will put us at 11, not to mention any Undrafted Free Agents, like EDS, we pick up.

If we don't trade some we're going to be cutting some good players on cut down day. I'd rather get something for them now if at all possible.

People seem to like EDS but can we really carry a 3rd string C? Barbre is most likely gone but McCarthy said he'll be given a chance.
Breno may get the chop if he doesn't win the starting RT job but after so much investment in his development it would be a waste to lose the chance of any return.

I love the depth we have on the OL (bar LT) but if we could get a 2nd or 3rd for Colledge or Spitz (who I both like) I'd be thrilled.

JSO:

It leaves the Packers very crowded along the offensive line where the starters are already set at four positions - left tackle (Chad Clifton), center (Scott Wells), right guard (Josh Sitton) and Tauscher. Jason Spitz and Daryn Colledge are expected to compete for the left guard spot.

Lang proved worthy of more playing time in an impressive rookie season. Giacomini has occupied a roster spot for two years (active for three out of 32 games) and, unless he suddenly changes position, is headed for the same fate again.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy recently said there was still hope for Barbre, whose horrid play set the stage for Tauscher's return.

That's nine offensive lineman, the same number of the Packers kept at the final roster cutdown. Center Evan Dietrich-Smith is still on the roster, and it's possible Thompson will also draft a tackle or two in April and add even more competition on the offensive line.

After how pathetic the line looked at the beginning of last season, who thought we would have this problem this year?

D-Smith is in a precarious spot. If Spitz goes back to LG over Colledge and Lang, than he has a spot. If Spitz again beats Wells out, then I would guess he is gone.

For the others it is going to come down to who is the most flexible. Looking forward to seeing the battles.

I would hardly at this point call it a log jam as some of the members right now have proven they aren't ready for Sunday's and may be in jeopardy of not having a roster spot come September on the Packers.

I expect a couple of players that had roster spots in 09 to be looking for a new home in late August...

Breno, Barbre, Colledge, Smith all fall into that category... I wrote a post on Saturday I think speaking about Ted being able to have freedom in this deep draft to build up the core of the bottom 50% of the roster without being held to the fire on having to find an immediate starter.. that targets guys like this in groups that need to be improved whether it is because of their play or their "availability".

I think if they try and draft 2 LT prospects then 1 will be back up LT and the other gets moved to guard and they try to move via trade either Spitz or Colledge depending on who wins the LG spot. I think Spitz will end up with the starting LG spot. My O-Line roster prediction is

Clifton - Spitz - Wells - Sitton - Tauscher

and for backups
Rookie 1 - Rookie 2/Lang - EDS - Rookie 2/EDS - Lang

I think they really like EDS and want to keep him on the roster but I don't see Breno or Barbre getting more than this offseason to prove themselves before they get the boot. If they do draft 2 rookie lineman I expect them to keep both pretty much no matter what instead of risking another Jamon Merideth and trying to sneak one onto the practice squad.

With Clifton and Tauscher back, I would be real surprised if Ted drafted any O-linemen in the first 3 rounds, Ted has proven he will give his guys as much time as possible to prove they can compete at a high level on Sunday.

Wells is going to be the center, he solidified his starting position last year.

Suddenly the weakest part of the offense last year is looking pretty solid.

I said it in the other thread, the starters should be set going into Ota's, let the backups fight for the other spots left.

I read the article on JSonline. I don't get the complaining of resigning the best right tackle on the market. The team was clearly better with Tauscher last year.

Are we really expecting Allen Barbre and Breno G to make the roster this year? If you can't impress in three training camps, you don't deserve a roster spot IMO. That's what Breno G faces this year. Barbre very well could end up released as well because of the logjam, but he had his shot. I hardly look at this as a problem. To me this article is complaining just because.

There is nothing wrong with bringing in a ton of lineman to compete for jobs. Competition brings out the best in everyone as the article on JSOnline implies when talking about Ryan Grant running harder because of Ahman Green.

Right now, I think it's very likely that Daryn Colledge is dealt in a deal that will mirror the Tony Moll trade from a year ago. I think Lang will get his shots at both right tackle and left guard. If he beats out Spitz at left guard, he'll be the left guard and Spitz will be the backup.

I think the Packers are going to draft a LT to develop for the future in the first few rounds. They'll probably take another in rounds four or five.

In the end I guess my point is: Colledge, Barbre, and Breno G are likely casualties of this. Why is that bad?

Most of these guys need to be drafted over or free agent signed over if we are to be an elite team.

Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : sounds like Packers don't get good compensation, Jaire staying
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Nobody coming up with a keep, but at x amount
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Trade, cut or keep
dfosterf (16-Apr) : that from Jaire
dfosterf (16-Apr) : My guess is the Packers floated the concept of a reworked contract via his agent and agent got a f'
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Yes, and that is why I think Rob worded it how he did. Rather than say "agent"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Same laws apply. Agent must present such an offer to Jaire. Cannot accept or reject without presenting it
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : I'm thinking that is why Rob worded it how he did.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The Packers can certainly still make the offer to the agent
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Laws of agency and definition of fiduciary responsibility
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Jaire is open to a reduced contract without Jaire's permission
dfosterf (16-Apr) : The agent would arguably violate the law if he were to tell the Packers
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : That someone ... likely the agent.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : So, Jaire has not been offered nor rejected a pay reduction, but someone says he'd decline.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovksy says t was direct communication with someone familiar with Jaire’s line of thinking at that moment.
Zero2Cool (16-Apr) : Demovsky just replied to me a bit ago. Jaire hasn't said it.
dfosterf (16-Apr) : Of course, that depends on the definition of "we"
dfosterf (16-Apr) : We have been told that they haven't because he wouldn't accept it. I submit we don't know that
dfosterf (16-Apr) : What is the downside in making a calculated reduced offer to Jaire?
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Packers are receiving interest in Jaire Alexander but a trade is not imminent
Zero2Cool (15-Apr) : Jalen Ramsey wants to be traded. He's never happy is he?
