2010 NFL Team Needs: NFC North

By: Roshan Bhagat

Green Bay Packers: LT, CB, S, DL, 3-4 OLB depth, RB

Over the second half of the season, the Packers have developed into a balanced team as the numbers on both sides of the ball show. Offensively, the line is still showing some struggles to protect Aaron Rodgers for as long as he likes to hold onto the ball. An aging Clifton is protecting his blind side and finding a future replacement for Clifton should be the teams biggest priority. Rookie TJ Lang should be the LG or RT of the future in Green Bay. Outside of that that, the offense seems pretty set due to the emergence of the ground over the second half of the season. A speedy back in the mold of Darren Sproles may be a possibility, though back-up Brandon Jackson has come on in recent weeks. A back capable of returning kicks would be ideal. Defensively, starters Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly are set to become free agents. If they cant resign one, or both, the team will be depleted up front and need to invest more into what has become one of the strengths of this defense. Though the team has found a pair of starting outside linebackers from last years draft class, some depth at the position could help keep them fresh, that is assuming Aaron Kampman moves on. In the secondary, the injury to Al Harris and two other cornerbacks, all on injured reserve, has hit the team worse than expected. This seems like the right time to begin the search for the future replacements to Harris and Charles Woodson. Tramon Williams should be one, but the other doesnt appear to be on the team. Both starting safeties will be free agents at the end of the year and if they cant re-sign both, who have played well, theyll need to look to add a starter this offseason because their back-ups are just that.

I think with a complete offseason in Green Bay to build healthy muscle mass to his frame.. Underwood will develop into a solid to above average CB for the Packers. Lee is another candidate, if he can find some health.

Safety.. sorry.. but I don't see the answers on the Packers.. if they choose to extend Collins out long term.. they are going to have to find a running mate that is very football smart on the field.. Collins is a great athlete with outstanding range.. just makes enough mental miscues to cost us.

I think the column has it pegged.. they have to establish a better rotation at outside backer than Poppinga.. is that answer Obiozor? If you listen to Greene and respect his judgment upon players.. he might be. Does that mean if there is a guy on the draft board that you rate highly that you pass him up.. nope.. but again I think we have more pressing needs than spending a high pick on a OLB.

Offensive line being one of those pressing needs... we can't be facing the amount of rotation along the line again for another season and expect the offense to continue to put up impressive numbers.. sooner or later Rodgers will take one to many hits. Also...a line that can consistently open up running lanes of at least college caliber would be a major help in controlling the ball in games facing against prolific offenses.

I would rate Oline, Safety, then CB in our list of highest needs.. in that order.. then depth on the dline and backers.. that is if we can retain Pickett and Jolly.

The thing with Collins, in my opinion, is that he has football smarts. OI nkow he has a low wonderlic but I really I don't see a lot of negative plays by him that make me question his football intelligence.

He's a ball hawk, so if you want the big interceptions (and the big returns!) you have to live with a couple big completions here and there. The way the NFL is now, offenses have the big advantage. That's why it is impossible to expect your secondary to never give up big plays now and then.

Pretty good assement by the article. I don't think Brad Jones is the answer at the OLB position. He held his own but I think in the 3-4 you need a playmaker. Someone a little more special. Because it doesn't seem like alot of pressure or sacks are coming from the front three.
I think Collins a very good player and he is a keeper. Honestly, how many FS in the NFL are better than him? He is in the top 5. We do need a SS.
I am really thinking we need another huge gaurd like Sitton. I seen him knock Dockett flat on his ass by himself in the Cardinal playoff game. I am now thinking it is worth a 1st round pick if Iupati is available. If Detroit drafts Suh or McCoy and we have the Williams wall to block then we need more mass in the middle. I read somewhere that most of the sacks we took were from the middle. I then think Wells is good at center if we have big bodies next to him. I was very happy when the Pack drafted Colledge but I now don't think he is the answer at guard and definetly OT. I would not be suprised if he does not come back.
Yes LT is a big need. Can we squeeze another year or two out of Clifton? Tauscher does not get enough credit and he is good for a couple more years.
Just my opinion. I am not an expert. I think Ted is a very good GM but he needs to and is learning from some of his past mistakes and philosophies. It's time to invest in the OL. And please Ted Thompson lovers. Let's not blindly think he is perfect and get on the "bash anyone who says Ted Thompson is not a god and perfect" bandwagon.

Agreed. So Collins misses a few tackles here and there. He's still an Elite S.

The offenses have all the advantages nowadays. The new rules are making it like defenses have to play with a hand behind their backs. To counter it, we need someone to take risks.

I've always said I love aggressiveness. Heck, look at the Saints. Surprise onside kick. Going for fourth downs. I love that. Imagine if that Safety played it safe and went for the tackle instead of the interception. Screw that. Take chances. Be aggressive.

I love Collins style of play. He's like a young Darren Sharper. And yes, that's a compliment, not an insult.

Back to needs, OL = #1. Then someone who can put pressure on the opposing QB. The amount of time the Packers allow opposing QBs back there makes my blood pressure go up.

For depth, I'd say the same things the article says. I'd love a returner. We need a CB but it's not our #2 priority. Al Harris will be back. Williams is developing. Woody is elite still.

Is Willie Parker available? He's a speed type guy. Can he catch the ball? Vikes want to retain Chester Taylor.

I like Chester Taylor, but he's 30 right now which is an evil number for a RB. If we want him, it would probably be best to sign him one-year only and keep looking or developing another second RB who can catch screens.

Taylor is one of the better #2 RBs in the NFL though. He's just at that evil age for RBs.

Agreed. But at the same time, these past few years he hasn't seen a full work load. This would have to lead one to think that his legs are a bit more fresh then an LT who has been the number 1 running back year after year.

No?

Also, I can't imagine him signing a one year deal anywhere in the NFL. He can get much better then that, IMO, and would be worth the risk as long as the money isn't incredibly high. He would make a nice rotational back.

Good point Dodd. His 30 years is younger than a lot of other RBs' 30 years.

The Best Read On This Forum Is Not In Game Day Chat

It is Not The Comments On Monday After A Packers Game During The Season. Monday Mornings During The Season Are Always A hard read, Regardless Of The Final Score.

The Best read On This Forum Is Sure Is Not The Days After The Draft..... When Everyone Is Freaking Out.

The Best Read on This Forum Is Always This Time Of Year. When No One But The Best Of The Best Of Packer Fans Are Posting.

You Know Who You Are.

It Is Just Always A Serious, Educational Read In The Off Season.

As A Student Of The Game. I Very Much Apprciate The Off Season Read.

Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Where Carter falls prey to bad off the field influences (to be clear, not saying he'd clip someone though)
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Had Carter not gone to Philly were they already had a lot of old college friends, he ends up in a similar spot to Aaron Hernandez
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : I think some of his coaches told scouts to stay away
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : the street racing incident+conditioning and motivation problems
beast (10-Feb) : Then Carter was street racing, where the other car crashed and people died... and other teams were scared to pick Carter for some reason
beast (10-Feb) : I think the Saints traded up, giving their next year 1st to the Eagles, and then they sucked and Eagles got the 10th overall pick
packerfanoutwest (10-Feb) : wtf Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : Getting Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round in 2023 was pretty darn good
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : for some reason i'm thinking of a draft where the Eagles where in the mid 20s and a top player fell all the way to them
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : I think so. I would need to look it up. Think it may have been Carolina's pick.
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : i'm not sure who i'm thinking of now
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : oh fuck me i messed that up
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Jordan Davis was 13th overall
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Carter was 9th overall
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles had 15th and 10th selections, moved to 13 and 9 to get Davis and Carter back to back
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (10-Feb) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half
