Are the Packers at that stage where we're just a player or two from being a legitimate Super Bowl contender?

If yes, does Ted feel that way and with that feeling make him go get that guy or guys?

If you think so, who do you think we should get and how?

What player or players would put us over the top, how do we acquire said players considering how Ted does things.

I do think we are one player or two away, but unfortunately I think Ted Thompson thinks that we are going to be that good with what we have...I hope not though.

The biggest gamble will be with our O-line. Do you go and try to get an OT fast, or do you reckon that the way they played in the second half of the season will carry over to next year and that Clifton and Tauscher will stay healthy.

if not, you go OT pretty early. Most likely the first round if one of the top 5 tackles is on the board. In that case, I don't know if we will become a SB contender right away. You're going to miss something. If you trade for Merriman, you won't get a starting caliber safety. If you go Kindle in the 2nd, you still won't have a safety. If you don't go DE/OLB in the 2nd, you'll have little pass rush.

If you do, we could trade for Shawne Merriman, trade up in the first to get a top flight safety like Earl Thomas and take a fast, coverage ILB later on. He can be onesided, but he should be able to play somewhat of a tampa 2 role. Drop back in the middle and stop the pass. Finaly, you go OT again on day 3 and hope you find a gem like Tauscher and (maybe) Lang again.

We haven't seen any gutsy trades so far, but this would be the time. You have an 11-5 team with some glaring needs. This is not about small upgrades, this is about shooting up at some positions. If you fix those holes, we're an instant contender.

I think the team is close or at that point. Tough thing is, how is Ted going to finish the team. The uncapped year is going to make that tough. FA is going to suck ass with the 6 year UFA requirement and the additional tags.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

I think the uncapped year has pros and cons. what you say is true, but it also means that it will be much easier to keep some of the guys that we might lose off this past year's team. Like you said, free agency probably won't be real exciting this year, and the quality players will get snatched up quickly. I see there being more trades and bigger trades happening this year throughout the league. If the Packers make a splash, that's where it will happen.

Nice topic. I'll take a shot at an answer.

Are the Packers a player or two away from being contenders? Maybe closer to 3 or 4, but without nit-picking I'd say yes:

-We saw what the offense accomplished with a pretty sub-standard OL. They're arguably one decent LT away from being almost 180 degrees the other way, o-line wise. And a good OL with the rest of that squad? Fuggeddaboutit.

-The defense picked up some crucial pieces in Matthews and Raji last year, and both panned out positively. There's questionable depth in the secondary (especially @ the safety position), but one can argue (and several have) that had Kampy stayed healthy and continued his transition to 3-4 OLB, the QB pressure that he and Matthews could have provided would have shielded the secondary a bit. So is it Kampy's return, someone new at OLB, or added quality and depth in the secondary that'll shore up the defense? You can argue for all of those possibilities, really.

-Ryan Grant is for real. But man, a change of pace would be nice. Not necessary, but that extra weapon could make the offense just unstoppable.

So yeah, they could add a couple-few pieces on the O-line, along the defensive front, in the secondary and in the offensive backfield, and that could put them over the top, easily.

Does Ted feel that way/will he go get those pieces? Man, I don't know. I will say that he sure did something to address the defense last year. Changing the scheme and coordinator, being aggressive in the draft to pick up Matthews, we all know the record. On the other hand, we've all been wringing our hands about the o-line for years and we're still worried about it now. I just don't know - but I do think there's hope - we did get Woodson, we did get Picket and Chillar and other pieces to the puzzle. He was aggressive last off-season. So it could definitely happen.

Now for the WHO. Here's my list, and I'll admit that it's not informed by, say, Rockmolder's excellent research or dfosterf's ridiculous financial acumen; it's purely my own ham-fisted attempt to patch the holes.

O-line - Realistically, I don't see any FA adds or some blue-chip draft pick, here. There just isn't much available in FA, and the crop in the draft isn't nearly as good as it has been in years past. BUT, there are guys like Gabe Carimi who'll be around in later rounds and could turn into another Clifton or Tauscher. Not the best outlook, but adding the right guy could straighten this line out.

Defensive front seven - FA-wise, the get here (if there is one) is Shawne Merriman. The knee should be in better shape the second season after surgery, and he's got a stake in rebuilding his image - we're also talking about attracting FAs to a clearly up-and-coming team, so it's not like he'd necessarily laugh at the idea. Draft-wise, there look to be several good possibilities, many that wouldn't require reaching to get. This can be fixed, and I think it will be. There will be more pressure brought to bear on opposing QBs next season.

Defensive backfield - I'm probably an idiot. I'll just go ahead and say it. But I like Mays a lot - I've heard the knocks, that he's another Roy Williams (who, by the way, was one HELL of a strong safety until years of hard play took their toll), etc. Williams didn't have (reportedly) 4.3 speed. I personally think this kid (and he is just a kid; it's not like he's reached his pinnacle of development, here) can be coached into one hell of a rover in the middle of the field. Will Percy want to catch that slant if he knows Mays is waiting to dismantle him? All that speed, all that size - I know people don't like the word 'potential' anymore (thank you, Vernon Gholston), but this kid's got it coming out the ears. Personally, I think he's gone by the 23rd pick, but if he's not and Thompson drafts him, you won't hear me complain - just like you didn't hear me complain about Matthews. Sure, we could have had a Michael Oher (though we wouldn't have the Ravens coaches or scheme, so I don't see that as being comparable), but the guy we got gave us a big bunch of our sacks last year.

RB - Several possibilities here - some are scary to me (these little dudes just seem like they'll end up getting crushed - I don't know that guys like Sproules come along very often), but there are certainly several good change-of-pace options coming out of the college ranks this year. This piece is one of the easier ones to get.

A lot of the above is unlikely - that's okay, it's early and we're still speculating. What's nice is that almost none of it is full-on impossible. It could happen, and considering that if it does we're talking about one loaded football team, that's cause for optimism, at least for now.

My apologies for an over-long response - I just really like the topic.

We're not just one or two players away. I think we overplayed this year. Aaron was spectacular and we can't expect him to be this spectacular every year. Not at all a knock on Aaron, but let's be real - this was a freak year for everyone. I can't imagine having this many QBs ending the season over 100+ rating again.

We need 2 bodies on our OL. Supposedly it's a strong draft for OT. Good. Pick one up there in the first.

We need one more strong pass rusher. Can Kampy be the one? Not so sure. 3-4 doesn't fit well, and if we want to get results with Kampy, we might have to do a 3-4/4-3 hybrid.

We need Safety help. One body there.

So that's 3 or 4 guys.

What is Ted going to do? You might as well ask me when is our next war and with whom. I'll probably be more accurate than trying to figure out what Ted will do.

Gotta disagree with you on this one. Rodgers had a 93.8 rating in '08 as a first year starter. I don't think his jump to 103.2 is a freak year at all. He might not get quite that high again this year, but I'd bet he's in the ballpark, and I think it's fair to say he'll be better than his '08 mark. The guy is very, very good, and still has some room to improve. It wouldn't be a shock to see him lead the NFL in passer rating next year, at least to me.

A young team with a young QB, and I think it's fair to expect big things next year, assuming no critical injuries.

Hmm, I don't know Kevin, barring the key positions everyone has covered (O-line, Safety, Pass rush) I still think a major factor in any potential success has to be depth.

We saw last season when key players in our secondary went down, that our gut was very weak and exploited by the better NFL offenses.

The general notion is that Al Harris and maybe even Charles Woodson (when his physical starts to decline) will move to the safety positions - a domino effect as that leaves a weak corner corps unless we strike gold with a draft pick/free agent or SHOCK HORROR a trade.

I think the front seven is one pass rusher away from being a potentially elite unit. There is depth at the linebacker positions too.

Offensively, as long as the unit stays together, develops and get's that elusive o-line jigsaw piece, they should be capable of ousting anybody. That being said, offensive line and running back depth is still a concern.

I think replacing the deadwood ahemBush from our roster is just as important as those key positions - injuries will happen barring some freak luck.

Green Bay is very close in my view. If you look up and down the Packers' roster, it's hard to find something that is just down right terrible. Even the offensive line, with Clifton and Tauscher isn't terrible. It is with Colledge and Barbre lining up at tackle, but I think that ship has sailed and now GB can look to correct that.

I think the Packers need to grab a young LT in the draft to compete for the starting job with Chad Clifton, and I think they need to add a pass rusher via trade or free agency. If that fails, then maybe bring back Kampman and see if he can complete the transition.

The best case for the pass rusher is for him to come via trade or free agency. We already talked about Shawn Merrimen in that other thread. I think he would be a huge get, but I also like Julius Peppers. I know people think he won't work in the 3-4 like Aaron Kampman, but Peppers is one of the best athletes in the NFL. He's tall and lanky, but I heard someone compare him to Demarcus Ware and in away that comparison makes sense. Ware isn't exactly a small guy. A better comparison is Adalius Thomas, when Thomas was in his prime, except Peppers is actually a better athlete. I think Peppers is the type of talent that can work in anything. Plus, he's so versatile. He could play DE in the nickel in this scheme too. A move like one of the two I mentioned would make this team a Super Bowl contender and that's assuming they aren't already.

Not to mention I think the development of younger players is overlooked. I disagree with Zombie about Aaron Rodgers. I think he's going to get better and better. He'll learn to get rid of the ball quicker this off-season and he'll continue to develop better chemistry and timing with his receivers as they all go into the third season as a group. I'm expecting a big year out of him again. No reason not too.

I guess it depends what Ted Thompson wants to do. To add a player the caliber of one of the two I mentioned above, he's going to have to pay. He has in the past with Woodson. Perhaps he's willing to do so again. I don't know. I'm not getting my hopes up.

There is also the route of adding a guy like Tyrone Carter. He's an upgrade over Bigby.
