Former Packer hopes for Jahvid Best

By Brian Carriveau

I was talking to former Green Bay Packers running back and running backs coach Harry Sydney today for a totally unrelated article for Maple Street Press, but we were talking about the draft, and I wanted to pass along this little bit he shared.

"I think what the Packers need this year, Id love to see them get a third down back," said Sydney. "Brandon Jacksons not the guy. Nobodys the guy. They need to have a third down back. Id love to see Jahvid Best fall in their lap. Hed become their third down back and their kick and punt returner, because thats where theyre short at."

Interesting to see his thoughts on Jackson. And also about his feelings on Best.

It seems to be a good bet that Best would be around at No. 23 in the first round, but that might be a stretch to select him at that point in the draft. If he were to fall into the Packers' lap, it would seem more likely that it would happen in the second round.

I kind off agree with him. I think that Jackson has the tools to be our 3rd down back, but he's banged up all the time. He isn't exactly a speedster either.

Best would be an absolute steal in the 2nd. It seems very unlikely to me that he'll drop that far. Like the article states, he'd be a reach in the 1st. I'd love to get him on our team. His speed, his hands, the explosiveness he brings to an offense, he'd be a great addition for our 3rd down offense.

I realize Brandon isn't the fastest guy, but he does have some things going for him that you want in a 3rd-down RB.

1) He has become exceptional in picking up blitzes. Latter half of the season, when B-Jack got playing time he did a solid, solid job blocking blitzers, which I think often gets overlooked because our line turned up their play a few notches. But Jackson is definitely the best pass-pro back on this team.

2) He is pretty good out of the backfield. He's got some shiftiness to him that is a plus, but add that to some good hands and you have a nice option on screens / check downs.

I wouldn't mind a RB early ... but I don't think it is a major need. Mix up B-Jack's skill set, and I think he provides you with options on third and short situations - either run or pass; he allows you to be versatile. Maybe not to the extent a CJ Spiller would, but still some non-the-less. That said, Jackson needs to show he can stay healthy... that is a concern.

A RB in the late rounds wouldn't be all that bad. I wouldn't mind Best at all - especially in the second round - but I'd look at him more of a returner than a 3rd down back with return abilities. He'd like alongside Grant as a 1/2 punch... but I think RB early isn't necessarily the best way to proceed to make this team better.

Couldn't agree more with what you just said. We have ourselves a great 3rd down guy in Jackson. If he can stay healthy, that is.

There's just one "RB" who I'd really like and that's Dexter McCluster. He fits the Percy Harvin mold. Take a carry or 2 per game as an outside guy. Line up as a receiver most of the time. Returning kicks, as well.

He is projected to go off the board somewhere in the 2nd or early 3rd. He might just be available to us at the 56th pick.

Didn't Best also have an injury history? I think the Packers could use another RB, but I worry about them picking up another player with an injury history.
