I do not share a great deal of personal stuff here on this great site.

However I feel the need to at this moment. Sometimes a single moment in life just jumps up and bites you. It brings tears to your eyes, and there is no stopping them.

Last night, I called my Brother.

My Brother is an editor for a news paper in British Columbia Canada. He is also a very good writer. We are very close, as is my whole family.

Well.. I called my brother after watching the Canucks come back from a first period 3-0 deficit to beat the Maple Leafs 5-3 on Hockey Night In Canada.

As soon as he answered the phone I knew he was rushed. He told me: "Rick I have to call you back, I just had a moment in my life that I have to capture in words right now, while it is fresh in my mind.

Knowing him, I agreed to call him back. I did. I said what happened, he said Atty just cried his first team tears.

I said: You wrote about it. He said damn right.

Below is what he wrote and will appear in the Editorial Op-Ed next week.

I am sharing this with you all. I know it is not football, but we can all relate....

The proudest moment of any dad is when their children arrive in this world. The feeling upon laying eyes on that little being is beyond
description and truly life-changing.

I just experienced the second-proudest moment of any Canadian dad
for the first time, my boy cried his eyes out after his favourite
hockey team blew a big lead and lost.

My own eyes nearly welled up with pride as he looked at me fat,
juicy, cartoon-like teardrops falling from his cheeks like a winter's
night in Vancouver. All I could do was hug him to my chest, silently welcome him to the fraternity and try to explain why the team
he loves can make him feel like the world has ended.

My son, you see, is a Toronto Maple Leafs fan, and I explained his
particular allegiance will likely mean more tears than cheers.
(My first bout of bawling came on April 12, 1980. I was 11 and the
Buffalo Sabres had just eliminated the Canucks in the preliminary
round.

He's only eight, but my boy knows all about the Maple Laughs, as some
call them. He realizes they last won the Cup the year before I was
born. He understands he is in Canuck country here in Kamloops.
But still he wears the crisp, white and blue Maple Leaf jersey when
the squad hits the TV screen. Still he sleeps in his flannel white and
blue Maple Leaf pyjamas. Still the Maple Leaf logo (painted by his
mom) stares down from the bedroom wall. And, yes, still the flashing
GO LEAFS GO lamp is plugged in and flashing on his dresser.
It wasn't always so. When kids are younger, they gravitate toward
logos they like.

When he was four, my son was a Calgary Flame fan. Well, he was really
a Calgary Flame logo fan. Then he gravitated toward the Oilers. The
Canadiens intrigued him as he turned five, while his sixth birthday
saw him adopt the San Jose Sharks.Hence the impressive roster of
ever-shrinking NHL jerseys in his closet.

However, in the spring of 2008, about two months before his seventh
birthday, I laid down the law: On June 5, you will turn seven, I told my son.

You are becoming a big boy. You have played Peter Puck hockey and are
about to join minor hockey. It's time to pick a team for life.
He agreed and set about making the most important choice a boy will make. He did his research. He started with the logos. He checked the history of the teams online. He pulled out his atlas and globe and saw where each city was located in North America.

He chewed it over. He slept on it.
About a week before his seventh birthday, he had it narrowed down to
three teams. On June 5, 2008, he woke up and declared his allegiance to the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Why? The logo had a lot to do with it, I suspect.
But he really liked their goalie, Vesa Toskala. He also liked how
Alexander Steen played. And he liked that the Leafs were Canadian.
I asked him if he was certain, reminding my boy there was no turning
back, no option to jump on the Canucks' bandwagon when the Leafs fall,
as they tend to do on an annual basis.

He was certain.

And so his love affair with the Maple Leafs began, as it did with hockey.
We don't think about it often, but hockey has given fans our own
language, phrases that mean nothing unless you are versed in the
lexicon of steel on ice.

When I speak with my son and mention a player gunning for a "Darryl
Sittler night," we both know we are referring to that magical game of
Feb. 7, 1976. When my son tells me a player got a "Gordie Howe hat
trick," we both know what was accomplished. When I refer to the
"Original Six," and he mentions the "Cup," (always cap C), there is no
need to elaborate. In the rinks of Kamloops, we all know what the
"Gretzky Rule" means.

And, when your team inexplicably blows a 3-0 lead at home on Hockey
Night In Canada and loses 5-3, we all know tears must be shed.
It's a Canadian rite of passage.

Wow Rick......that's a beautiful piece. Please relay that to your brother for me. VERY touching.
I was 8 when i became a Packer fan. That seems to be an age where sports really starts to make sense.
Someday, he will feel the thrill of watching his team become champions. (I mean, as long as he's not a Minnesota Vikings fan)

Oh....and i was wondering, what IS a "Canuck?" I've heard the term before, but never know what it means.

Very well written, Rick. Enjoyed reading it.

Heh. Try being a Packers fan from '76 to '92. Those were miserable years. It could have been worse though. I could have been 3 years older so my years would be '73 on. Yikes.

That was an awesome article and I can totally relate to the logo picking as a child. When I was younger I liked the Avalanche because of their logo.

Your brother has some serious talent!

Nice!

Since he's not in home territory of the Maple Leafs, I suppose he'll never have to worry about them picking up and leaving town like the North Stars did when I was a young-un. That's worse than your team blowing a 3-0 lead at home, I promise. 🙂

Martha Careful (40m) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (1h) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (17h) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (18h) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (18h) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (18h) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (19h) : 4th
Zero2Cool (19h) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (21h) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
Martha Careful (6-May) : Happy 93rd Birthday to the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time...Willie Mays
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Walter Stanely's son
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : and released CB Anthony Johnson and DL Deandre Johnson and waived/injured WR Thyrick Pitts (thigh-rick).
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
