This can be argued all day, but the posters that are bringing up the dreaded Ahmad Carrol analogy are correct, imo.

That may or may not be a fair comparison, but it was pretty obvious to me that Ahmad had an established PI reputation, and Tramon is establishing himself in much the same way, rightly or wrongly.

It is my speculation that ref crews "scout" for certain proclivities in teams/players, as do opposing teams. Further, if I were on the coaching staff of an opponent's team, I would make it my business to ensure that the ref crew was made fully aware of a Tramon Williams and his PI tendencies.

I say he is a target of both opposing teams and refs going forward.

I worry about this even more because we have a HC that doesn't see what I see, at least in many of his public pronouncements on the issue. It isn't like he has a choice, because I don't have any idea what he could possibly do about it personnel-wise, but it would be nice if we (the fans) got a loud and clear message that he (Mike McCarthy) is going to try and fix it.

Instead, historically what we have got is a sort of "boys will be boys" speech from him. That might be the effect of our style of defense, and the equity of all those calls is debatable, but the reality is that this league has tilted towards the offense to an unfortunate (imo) degree, and those calls are going to be made.

One positive outcome of last night's horrific number of penalties was the commentary by the announcers that this shit is getting relatively ridiculous. HOPEFULLY, someone from the league took note of that sentiment, and they (hopefully) will "cut back on the ticky tack".

I don't think we can plan for that. We are lucky the Ravens are as stupid as us. :thumbleft:

The problem is every one of those PI penalties looked correct. They are going to, and frankly should, call a defender every single time he arm bars the receiver. That's textbook PI, and I guarantee you if it had been just the Ravens doing this most of the people saying "Let them play" would have been screaming about the penalties not being called.

The worst part about defensive pass interference is the spot of the foul. It's the only infraction that can mean a forty or fifty yard change in field position.

I don't mind them calling it tight (so long as they're consistent), but i dont understand why it has to be a 50 yard penalty.

If it's defensive pass interference, the offense gets the ball at the spot of the foul.

Let's even the field.

If it's offensive pass interference, mark the ball BACK the amount of yards from the line of scrimmage to the spot of the ball.

(I'd prefer to just let them play and forget flags. Let men be men)

Because it'd be pretty easy to do what happend at the start of the game. Can't remember who, but one players just held a receiver's arm for a yard or 10. If he hadn't, that'd been a long TD. Now, he gets a 'better' call in PI, but still gives up 30 yards.

If you give a 5 yard penalty on those, defenses are going to abuse receivers all day long when they run the risk of giving up a big play.

Or, at least, I would.

A couple of years ago I thought I read where they were discussing the possibility of it being a static yardage penalty and loss of down.. that would even it out some more.

Exactly right, and that's what happened on one of the early throws to Jennings. The Ravens CB was in single coverage with no deep safety on his side, and rather than give up the long TD he just grabbed Jennings and took the penalty. Lousy coverage, but a smart play.

In my opinion, if teams turn to just chucking the ball downfield hoping for a 45 yard penalty, then that is the refs' fault for turning the game into that kind of a joke. They have to manage the game better, simple as that. Kudos to the Packers for not taking as much advantage of it as the Ravens did. You could see Baltimore just decide at one point that when they needed yards, they were going to fling the ball on a high arcing bomb and wait for the yellow laundry. I thought 2 calls against Baltimore were garbage and I thought the two against Williams in the endzone were garbage.

My main issue with it is this. If you call DPI too tightly, you start punishing players for good aggressive play.

If Tramon goes for the ball on those defenses and doesn't grab the receiver's arm every time, he doesn't get flagged. Grabbing the arm is going to draw the flag every single time, and it should. How can you blame the officials when the defenders knowing the game is being called that way keep doing it? Both teams' DBs have to take some responsibility here.

Here didn't grab the arm every time.. but a defender going looking back for the ball can have a hand upon the receiver.. not pass interference.

Some were no doubters. Some were boardline tacky.. but the called the game consistently (minus one blatant missed on on Williams).. so we should have made the adjustment.

Yet we never do. (Make the adjustment.)

That might be unfair to say, but that is how it seems.

I readily admit it would be hard to show evidence of something that does not happen...

It is just that we have ample evidence that we continue with our "style" of defending, damn the consequences.
