Are you on Vista or XP?

I'd check my Task Manager and sort running processes.
Find any that are under your user/login name that seem suspicious.
If you don't know which ones are of that nature, jot them all down and post that list here.
If you find a process that is using up your CPU by 3% or more right click that process and end it.

See if that fixes your problem. Before you end that process note the amount of processes you have currently running. (If you have XP you should really only have about 30-35 running.) If you have 33 running, end one and it goes down to 32 and stays, that's good. If it goes back to up 33, that means whatever process you're killing has another one that it is firing t back up. That's fairly common.

But, the good news is, whatever the exe is, there's a solution to fix it.

For example, if everything went to complete hell, I have a brand new, unused Microsoft XP disc that was sent directly from Microsoft. I got it when my ISP wiped out my hard drive. It is fully licensed, legal, etc. (They were amazing good in the customer service department, btw)

If the need arises, you may have it. Sadly, I would imagine you would be contacting me via another computer. Just want you to know that option is out there...I can't imagine it would come to that, but then again, I never thought that an unsolicited "tune up" from my ISP could wipe out my C and D drives...

Who provided that CD and is it Home or Professional and if it's Professional, is it Corp and what Service Pack is it?

Microsoft itself provided it. They do not ship a version past SP2. It is home w/SP2. I screwed up when she asked me...she said, "If you say you had professional, I will send professional" I got all honest by accident and said, "No , it was home." She also asked if I wanted to replace all my Microsoft Office software... I screwed up again and said I had those discs...

(They keep an eye on us, btw--She knew everything I ever got from them)

I never had to use it because when I called them to get the software I was actually in the process of restoration and had become SO frustrated that I was saying "to hell with" trying to "insert" (this is theoretically, lol) my wife's Dell discs into my HP machine...if you catch my drift...lol

ANYWAY, by the time the software arrived I had (theoretically) made her crap work in my machine, so this software is fresh as a daisy, including the license.

Home Edition I believe hast to be phoned in to validate it's legit, unless internet connection is established. I could be wrong, I typically deal with XP Pro and XP Pro Corp editions.

Does this CD say anything about Dell on it? If so, it will not work in any PC other than a Dell.

As per his post, I did not see whether it was Home or Professional or if it was a Corp Pro edition nor did I see the Service Pack. I asked where it was from specifically because if it was from Microsoft for a Dell PC it will not work in any PC other than a Dell.

Good one Vikesrule. LOL I'm still on our computer but whatever it is has wiped out most of our files like restore, etc. My daughter talked us through 90 minutes last night....to no avail.

I've got a call in to a former student of mine who now runs a PC repair business. I remember when he was in 5th grade he had to set up my computer at school and put in SchoolMaster for me so I could do grades.

Anyway, I've made copies of all your ideas so I have something to keep me busy. If this thing pulls a Titanic and sinks, you'll know I either blew it up or fed it to the squirrels.
