One trait of the new defense that became apparent is that nearly every nickel or dime package involves just two down linemen who put their hand on the ground.
In most cases with the No. 1 defense, those two were rookie B.J. Raji and veteran Johnny Jolly, with nose tackle Ryan Pickett coming off the field and being replaced by a defensive back.
In effect, it becomes a 2-4-5 defense, with two of the four linebackers and maybe a third linebacker or a defensive back also likely to rush. The question the offense has to answer is Which two?
What it gives you is more flexibility, McCarthy said. When you identify that, (it becomes) Is the guy rushing or is he dropping. So its the uncertainty of that position as far as the alignment. It gives that particular individual the defensive end if its a four-man line, or the outside linebacker the opportunity to play with more vision as far as what the offense is giving you with formations and motions and things like that.
So it basically plays into the base concept of the defense youre not really sure who the fourth rusher is.

If I have this straight, in the base we will have 3 down linemen, 4 LB's and 4 in the secondary.
In the nickel and dime we swap out one of the down linemen for a secondary player?

This defense is coming off as pretty damn exotic and unpredictable.

Exactly what Capers promised it would be. If only we could find a Reggie White caliber player to anchor this new defense.

I think caper's new D will help bring out the best in same guys. Our current starting ROLB thompson may bring some light to our D. If clay gets better he may be in there also.

I havn't heard alot of talk about harrell; wondering how he's doing in OTAs. And can jenkins play fully yet or is his ankle still a problem?

I don't know where we'd put Reggie, though. Putting him at DE would be a waste of his rushing skills in my eyes and he was too big of a guy for an OLB spot.

Anyway, I like this formation. Big thing is, though, that I can imagine that this formation can make stopping the run quite a bit harder if your LBs aren't that aggresive. Like we saw last year.

In essence it's the same formation, though. I asume that in most cases, Kampman and Thompson will be the OLBs, who would play DE normally.

Makes you wonder though, we wouldn't be in our base formation (3-4) for 50-60% of the time, but stuff like this doesn't count as the base formation either. Maybe that's why Kampman was slightly annoyed?

I don't a 2-4-5 works against a powerful running football team like Chicago or Minnesota unless it's third and very long.

This.

I would rather us go 4 down lineman and 2 LB's in most cases.

They are talking about this scheme coming out of the nickel or dime which means it's in a passing situation. This is obviously not how they will line up on first down, or, in a second down situation where they may run the ball, like 2nd and five.

What they are talking about here with two down lineman is that is one scheme in which they plan to use the quickness of LB's and DB's in order to get pressure on the QB in passing situations.

This is not what they will be using on first down or run downs.

The first time Raji busts through a double team and sacks the QB in a 2-4-5 D, I'm going to shatter my vocal chords screaming "Victory!" Johnny Drama style.

This will only be seen in obvious passing situations, so don't worry too much about us getting caught in it against runs.

The counter to it is a double tight end set, and picking up a big gainer on a deep draw.

In a close game, I don't like. If you want to pin your ears back because you have the luxury of a lead, then it would be an interesting formation.
