GREEN BAY — No one has, at any point, used the word benched. Certainly not coach Mike McCarthy, who worked awfully hard to avoid it on Tuesday.

But whatever the Green Bay Packers did with veteran cornerback Sam Shields on Monday night after he struggled in coverage against Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones, it's officially in the past.

Shields said Wednesday he fully expects to be back in his every-down role for Sunday's game at Buffalo, and whatever lingering effects there might have been from his Nov. 30 concussion are gone, he said.

When asked about Shields being replaced by Davon House in the fourth quarter against the Falcons, McCarthy said it was part of the coaches' "rotation" plan. Except, a rotation would imply that players rotate in and out of the game, and when Shields came out, he never went back in. House ended up playing the final 21 defensive snaps.

Asked why he was told he was taken out of the game, Shields kept saying that the Packers were just being "cautious" with him.

"I talked to my certain coaches, we talked about it and moved on. But they weren't like, 'You're benched, you suck.' It wasn't like that," Shields said at his locker Wednesday. "They felt it was time for House to get in there. They were being cautious about my head."

House broke up what would have been a touchdown to Jones with 7 minutes 20 seconds left in the game. Although he stayed on the field, House was unable to practice Wednesday because of a shoulder injury he suffered on the play. His status for Sunday against the Bills is unclear.

Shields acknowledged being off his game and said not practicing during the week — he said he wasn't cleared by doctors until "Friday or Saturday," and he did next to nothing in practice on Sunday — was a factor in his performance

"Man, it's very tough, just going in without practice," Shields said. "I needed a couple reps. That probably would've helped out. It happens. I was in there, I got back on the field (and) that was the most important part. I'm getting reps this week and I'll be ready for Buffalo."

Pro Football Focus charged Shields with four completions on eight targets for 75 yards and a touchdown, an opposing passer rating of 122.4.

"Me watching the film, I don't think I played bad," Shields said. "One deep ball that [Jones] caught out of bounds that could've been a touchdown, I was supposed to be on top. That was my fault. But other than that, I think the game went well."

Whatever the case, Shields expects Sunday, when the Packers must deal with rookie standout Sammy Watkins, to go better.

"We talked about it. We moved forward," Shields said. "But that week without preparation, it does take its toll on you."

The title just made me laugh. Glad House was able to go in and play in Shield's place.

I've stated it elsewhere, but House was a much better physical matchup for Julio Jones. Dude is big and tall, albeit not as fast as Shields.

But Shields also hadn't practiced all week. Dude came up under Woody, he'll be fine. He probably still wasn't quite right from the concussion either.

Going forward - do we give Tramon another 3 year deal & sign House for the future - or do we just lock up House and let Williams walk? Keep in mind, we still have Hayward to battle with House for 2nd and 3rd DB too. That's a tough call for Uncle Ted this off season.

Maybe this decision will have to wait until the Cobb numbers are settle on!

When the off season gets here(hopefully in February [grin1] ), I see a much larger turnover in personal than in the past.

The dominoes will start falling when Ted decides what to do with Cobb then Bulaga.

Four veterans that will probably not be back are Kuhn, Hawk, Bush and Williams.

With the developement of Lacy and R. Rodgers, IMO Kuhn will become expendable, until this year, he was A. Rodgers best protector.

I don't see a true FB being on the roster in 2015.

Hey Let's talk about AJ Hawk!!!!! 😆
He is gone, unless Ted brings him back at a reduced price to help develop Barrington and any draft pick.

Jarret Bush, has carved himself out a pretty good 9 year career, but as with Kuhn, younger guys, with more talent at the DB position will take over for him as Gunner.

Tramon Williams's fate will be decided by watching what Ted does with Sean Richardson and Davon House.

There is probably a team out there that will be willing to pay Tramon more money then Ted would, so he is probably gone.

Then there is still questions on what Ted will do with Raji, Guion, Tolzien, Barclay, and Lattimore.

I could see 3 of the 5, maybe 4 ot the 5 leaving after this year.

I was addicted to The Hokey Pokey, but I turned myself around!

Hayward is a good slot CB and House is pretty good on the outside. Williams isn't what he was 2 or 3 years ago. Only thing with Williams has gotten better is his tackling.

And at the end of last year when he stated the team needed more leadership. He sort of rubbed me the wrong way. Tramon was that veteran, he should have been the one doing the leading, not looking for somebody else.

Tramon gets two years from me. Maybe like low risk Julius Peppers type "aging veteran" deal.

Hayward needs more playing time than he's getting, especially since he's trying to get back up to speed after basically missing an entire year. I still put him ahead of House.

Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
Martha Careful (6-May) : Happy 93rd Birthday to the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time...Willie Mays
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Walter Stanely's son
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : and released CB Anthony Johnson and DL Deandre Johnson and waived/injured WR Thyrick Pitts (thigh-rick).
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
