If the U.S. government didn't fear the wrath of an armed an angry society, I guarantee you that it could happen. The federal government is massive, they might not have the right to shut down the internet at this point in time, but when the national guard comes knocking on the door and wants to shut you down, what are you gonna do?

Call my son and hand the phone to the guys at the door. I'll bet it is men he served with for the last 6 years. I'll bet I still know at least half of the men in his unit myself.

If the government thew the kill switch no major corporation could function. It would be the collapse of business globally.
I can not do an auto quote or submit a loss to some of the companies I represent without the internet.
GM Detroit can not communicate with their plants. Look at all the companies that have international offices. They could not communicate. Once that happens there would be mass hysteria on a global scale. The dollar, Euro and Yen would plummet. Gold and oil would sky rocket.
The countries that have thrown the switch don't have a sound economy to begin with so if they throw the switch and mess up the financial base they don't have far to fall and they were going into that hole anyway.

Didn't we see this movie about ten years ago with Y2K? The generator salesmen were pretty happy, but other than that I think that was blown way out of proportion. A lot of computer boys had some good work for a while.
