Seasono is like a broken record. Fix the Oline, Reduce sacks, Get to the Opponent QB...

Thanks for the good article, porky. As usual, I agree with most of your points. One exception is that I did not think the O-line played any better in the Lions game than they did in the previous four games. I don't feel any better about blown assignments than I do about guys getting beaten one-on-one. Also, there were at least five penalties on the O-line. Four on Clifton and one on Sitton. Plus there were several plays where Rodgers had to make exceptional effort to avoid sacks.

Then you have to consider that the Lions' D-line, which was not very good to begin with, was severely depleted by injuries. I guess what I'd like to see is a game where the O-line gives up two sacks or less and opens up some good holes for Grant--something that they didn't do until the fourth quarter against the Lions.

Lang should be a significantly better run blocker than Cliffy. Hopefully, he will be at least serviceable as a pass protector.

Well I am going with Pittsburgh this week. They are a little like us in that they haven't played that great yet but they have shown an ability to rise up and have a great coach.

At 4-2 and in a dogfight with Cincy in the division the Steelers NEED this game much more than the Vikes who come in on the road, on grass, and not in a dome.

The Vikes can tell themselves over and over how important it is to keep on a roll but the bottom line is they have eaked out three of their wins and Pittsburgh cannot afford a third loss this early.

I think a little seam came loose for the Vikes there in the second half last week when they looked awful giving up 28 points and no doubt should have lost the game at the end. Baltimore did that to them both running it and passing and the Steelers are very capable at both.

I actually think the Vikes get slapped around pretty good and while we have had our reality check it will be interesting to see how they respond. After all they know they are a hail mary and chip shot field goal away from being 4-2 right now. That's about as fine line from being really good and decent as it gets.

It is also unusual to see an undefeated team getting as much as 4 to 6 points. This tells me the books are begging the bettors to get on the Vikings side of this game and they are not biting. I wouldn't either.

Vikes D should get lit up without Antoine Winfield. Maybe James Harrison will hit Favre hard a few times.

Mental mistakes vs. Physical mistakes

The difference or a big one is that mental mistakes can be corrected. Penalties and blown assignments are mental mistakes.

Getting beat one on one is a physical mistake and you really can't correct that as easy. You either get better or you don't have it. That's why the offensive line looked better. It was mental mistakes. Really they gave up just one sack in terms of physicality against Detroit.

Porky is correct on almost all fronts. I would argue that the running game IS a talent issue. In the NFL, if you have a 7th round talent/ability RB you NEED to have a big mean dominant OLine. If you have a 1st round elite talent RB, you can still have a good attack with smaller quicker passblocking Linemen.

The Packers have both a 7th round talent RB AND a small agile passblocking Line. Bottom of the league rushing game year in and year out.

If you ask me, Spitz and Lang and maybe Dietrich-Smith are the only real players of the young bunch. Colledge, Giacomini, Barbre, and Wells are fringe NFL talent, and are guys who may not get an NFL job after there time with Green Bay.

It is possible to have success with Grant, but we have to be more deceptive with the rushing game. The passing formations need to be the same formations you run form. Our runs are very poorly designed and the Defense picks up on them quite easily before the snap., and that is on McCarthy. A little more creativity from the run wouldn't hurt.

But good post by Porky, and alot of people quickly forget the basis of the NFL is to get your team in full order late in the season. Look at the story of the Super Bowl teams of the last 4-5 years. They were all teams that had very rocky starts/middle of seasons. They were middle of the pack type teams and then picked it up when it counts, in December/January.

I think the Packers are a team that can make a run in the Playoffs. The passing game is Top 5 in the NFL, and the Defense is coming along and could become a force late in the season. It all falls on McCarthy and the staff to have the players ready to go and to be calling the right plays. Should be fun to watch....
