Potential IR change could have helped Crable

Posted by Mike Reiss, Globe Staff May 19, 2009 07:00 AM

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla -- One of the hot topics of discussion at the NFL's spring meeting will be the possibility of playing a 17- or 18-game regular season in the future. In speaking with Houston Texans owner Bob McNair for a piece in Tuesday's Boston Globe, he brought up the point that the league's rules for injured reserve could potentially be changed if the regular season is expanded.

Instead of having players who are on injured reserve lost for the season, would the NFL consider a baseball-like disabled list?

It is an intriguing thought.

The possibility had me thinking about an example from the Patriots' 2008 season that might apply, and outside linebacker Shawn Crable fit the bill.

Crable had a shin injury and was placed on season-ending IR on Nov. 5, a move made to create space on a different part of the roster. But if the Patriots had the option of placing Crable on a four-game disabled list, it is possible that he could have returned in December when the Patriots were ravaged by injuries at the position and had to summon Junior Seau off his surfboard and Rosevelt Colvin off his couch.

In the past, I think part of the reason the NFL hasn't had a disabled list is that it could be used as a way to stash players.

But if owners could find a way to regulate that -- perhaps a team can only have one or two players on a disabled list at one time -- it might change some opinions on the possibility of a longer regular season.

Under the current NFL system, a player must clear waivers to be placed on the Reserve/Injured list, and subsequently he is lost for the season. Under a system such as that outlined above, players might not have to clear waivers, and they could be held off the 53-man roster for less than a full season.

It is my contention that if the NFL extends its season further, it needs to increase the active roster size in some way. At the very least, the league needs to discard the 45-man active list and allow teams to activate all their players on gameday. I am convinced this will become a point of dispute with the players association when the owners do finally open negotiations for an extended season.

More on this topic:

Alterations may suit them
Owners mull some changes

By Mike Reiss
Globe Staff / May 19, 2009

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - If the NFL regular season is increased to 17 or 18 games - a hot topic to be discussed at the league's spring meetings starting today - owners are considering alterations in two areas that could complement that change.

Roster sizes might be expanded from 53 players and injured-reserve rules could be changed, according to Houston Texans owner Bob McNair.

"We're trying to look at all the information and ask ourselves the question: Do we need bigger roster size if we're going to do this? We also need to see if we need to do something about injured reserve," McNair said. "We have plenty of time, and we want to make sure the decision we make will be a good decision."

McNair said discussions on how much rosters could expand have not started in earnest, although they could today when the meetings officially begin at the Ritz-Carlton.

As for the injured-reserve rules, when a player is currently placed on IR, he is lost for the season. Teams that experience a run of injuries sometimes place players on IR to create roster room, even though the injured player has a chance to return by the end of the season.

With a longer regular season, the decision to end a player's season could have a deeper impact, which explains why owners are considering alternatives.

McNair did not detail what injured-reserve changes owners might consider, although the possibilities are plentiful. For example, the NFL could adopt a system like baseball's, in which a player is shelved for a specific number of days.

The discussions on roster size and injured-reserve rules indicate that momentum for a longer regular season continues to build.

In recent months, the issue has created a mini-firestorm of sorts, sparking passionate debate among players across the league. Close to home, Patriots linebacker Adalius Thomas has said that any additional games should be accompanied by extra pay, and he also expressed concern about the health of players if the season had more than 16 games.

First-year NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith is scheduled to be in attendance here today, and he is expected to address the owners as a group.

McNair is among those who believe a 17- or 18-game regular season, which would create more revenue, would be good for the league.

"I think it makes sense for us to do that, but we need to determine what all the implications are," he said. "From an injury standpoint, it doesn't appear there is anything significant in that regard, but we're still studying that. We don't want to do anything that harms our players."

Owners don't need the players' approval to expand the season, although McNair said, "I don't think we'd do anything without talking to the players and making sure everybody is on board."

The issue is likely to be one of the key points of the upcoming collective bargaining agreement, and any additional games wouldn't be added for 2009.

If the owners opt for a 17-game season, the preseason would be reduced from four games to three. If it's an 18-game season, the reduction would be to two exhibitions. So, in any scenario, it would still be a 20-game package.

Another topic expected to be discussed among owners at the two-day gathering is the league's television agreements with Fox and CBS, which are on the verge of being extended through 2013. Owners were buoyed by the news, feeling that the extensions - in a tough economy - are a reflection of the NFL's strength. The league also is near an agreement with Comcast to move NFL Network to a different tier, which will increase distribution by 10 million.

Owners are also expected to discuss an anti-tampering period, when teams would be allowed to speak with agents before free agency, although contracts couldn't be signed during that time.

"I don't see it as a big issue, but if that facilitates people being able to get deals done, and it works better that way, then I'm certainly not opposed to it," McNair said.

The effect of the economy on the NFL is also on the agenda.

"We're going to have some reports on what is going on with sponsors, with the media, and with the economic situation being what it is, everyone is very interested in determining what the future might be, because our revenues are threatened, there is no doubt about it," McNair said.

"We have a tremendous brand, and it's very strong, but we're not immune. We really have to stay on top of our business, just as everyone does."

An NFL DL is a great idea. They also need to cut the pre-season down from 4 games to 2 if they want to extend the season.

The only problem with a 17 game season is that some teams would have an extra home game each year. That could be un unfair advantage if one team plays 9 home games and their opponent for a playoff spot plays 8.

If they do it they would need to divide the 9-8 home game splits between AFC & NFC.

Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.

Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."

beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.

dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
