Saturday Post-Practice Update
August 01, 2009, 4:46 pm Link To This Post
News & Notes
Attendance for the first practice at the new Ray Nitschke Field was estimated at 2,100. The bleachers, seating approximately 1,500, were full, with several hundred more fans lined up along the fences on either end of the facility.

The center-right guard combination with the No. 1 offensive line began on a rotating system. It started with Scott Wells at C and Jason Spitz at RG, but other snaps with the No. 1 unit had Spitz at C and Josh Sitton at RG, or Wells at C and Sitton at RG.

Just as during OTAs and mini-camp in June, Jeremy Thompson was the starting OLB opposite Aaron Kampman with the No. 1 defense.

With LB Nick Barnett and DE B.J. Raji missing from the No. 1 unit, Brandon Chillar and Johnny Jolly, respectively, worked in those spots instead.

During a punting drill, G Evan Dietrich-Smith worked as a backup long snapper.

Plays of the Day
During team (11-on-11) work, WR James Jones made the offense's biggest play, hauling in a deep ball down the left side from QB Aaron Rodgers. Jones got behind CB Al Harris, and S Nick Collins was a touch late getting over to help.

WR Donald Driver also had a nice grab on a throw from Rodgers between three defenders over the middle, and TE Evan Moore hauled in a nice bootleg-left pass from QB Brian Brohm on a crossing route.

On defense, LB A.J. Hawk tipped and nearly intercepted a ball over the middle intended for Driver, while Kampman got what would have been a clean sack on a play-action pass.

Harris made a nice deflection on a pass for Driver, reaching around the receiver with his left hand to bat the ball away. During one-on-one drills with receivers, CB Joe Porter intercepted a deep ball intended for WR Patrick Williams.

Near the end of practice in the final team drill, CB Tramon Williams snagged an easy interception and potential long runback when WR Brett Swain cut inside and Rodgers threw the out route. The big hit of the day went to Collins, who dropped his shoulder pads on an unsuspecting RB DeShawn Wynn, knocking Wynn off his feet on a downfield run.

Injury/participation update
Barnett (knee) and fellow LB Brad Jones (back) are on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and did not practice.

Rookie first-round draft pick Raji also was absent, having not signed a contract yet.

I hope Spitz/Sitton is the C/RG tandem they go with.

I hope Raji gets that deal done ASAP. It's also interesting they called him a DE in that article.

I wonder why Chillar and not Bishop replaced Barnett in the lineup.

I like how jones had the play of the day - (for all you jones haters or nelson lovers lol)
dont get me wrong I think nelson is a good kid - just not much of a runner after he catches the ball
14 years ago
The weird thing about Nelson was he looked lighter on his feet and faster in college, and I don't think it was just because of the competition. It may have been that weight program that McCarthy had an issue with.

Are there Jones haters? Dude is a beast.

Sunday Morning Post-Practice Update
August 02, 2009, 11:02 am Link To This Post
News & Notes
Four players coming off of surgeries from the offseason -- DE Cullen Jenkins, S Atari Bigby, T Chad Clifton and C Scott Wells -- sat out the morning workout and are expected to be on a one-a-day schedule for practice, returning to the field tonight. Jenkins and Bigby did go through the early jog-through portion of practice, but they weren't dressed in their pads.

In Jenkins' absence, DE Justin Harrell took snaps with the No. 1 defense until dropping out of practice late with leg cramps. DE Michael Montgomery then filled in.

S Anthony Smith took the vast majority of the snaps with the first unit in place of Bigby.

On the offensive line, the No. 1 unit was the same as during OTAs and mini-camp in June, with Tony Moll playing LT for Clifton, Jason Spitz at C, and Josh Sitton at RG. Allen Barbre remained at RT and Daryn Colledge at LG.

The day started out as a rough one for the tight ends, as Donald Lee dropped a pass on the first snap of team practice. Moments later, TE Evan Moore was called for a false start, and then Lee false-started as well.

Attendance was approximately 1,400.

Plays of the Day
What would have been the play of the day was a near-miss, as WR Greg Jennings had a deep ball from QB Aaron Rodgers glance off his fingertips after he had gotten behind CB Tramon Williams.

The offense made its share of solid plays, though, with WR JaRon Harris making a diving catch over the middle on a throw from QB Brian Brohm. Rodgers beat the blitz one time with a quick slant to WR James Jones, and he had a nice connection with WR Donald Driver on a crossing route. Driver also made a nice play by leaping to catch a throw by Brohm over top of LB Clay Matthews, and RB Tyrell Sutton burst into the open field when the offensive line beat the blitz with a running play.

The defense held its own as well. Smith knifed into the backfield for what would have been a clean shot on RB Ryan Grant, while LBs A.J. Hawk and Brandon Chillar blitzed for a sack of Rodgers. LB Brady Poppinga also got into the backfield for what would have been a sack of Brohm.

In the secondary, CB Charles Woodson made a nice read and interception on a ball over the middle from Rodgers to Driver, while S Nick Collins made a good deflection along the sideline on a comeback route to WR Brett Swain, barely getting over there in time.

The big hit of the morning goes to RB DeShawn Wynn, who knocked LB Desmond Bishop's helmet off picking him up on a blitz.

Injury/participation update
LBs Nick Barnett (knee) and Brad Jones (back) remained out, while DE B.J. Raji is not yet under contract. DE Johnny Jolly continued to work with the No. 1 defense in Raji's absence.

I thought it was interesting that Deshawn Wynn laid the wood on Desmond Bishop for a change haha.

Spitz/Sitton is a little bigger, so I would like to see that combo as well.

Raji moved into the starting DE role during minicamps, so they can get him and Pickett on the field at the same time. Raji will also play some NG and will probably move into that position full-time within a couple years.

From what I've been reading, Chillar is the #3 ILB. He may be the one who takes over for either Barnett or Hawk in case of injury. He was arguably our best linebacker last season, and there's even been some talk of him possibly challenging Hawk for a starting job, but I doubt it.

Judging from all the tweets Demovsky has been posting, Chillar is having a very explosive camp.

Holy Cow! -

Lets go over a few things ...

- looks like matthews is actually practicing; first I heard that he\s actually playing and not nursing a hamstring injury

- A smith took the majority of snaps (our pick up from the steelers)

- Did you notive how many times the work blitz was mentioned in this practice? ... and then did you notice they sent both hawk and chillar in on a blitz ie both inside linebackers (if they were a 3-4 setup)

- Sounds like jones is getting into the rythem of things - I'm hoping this guy does well this year. Nothing like giving opposing CBs a headache trying to figure whom to cover.

- I liked wynn in 07 hoping he gets more action this year.

- again I liked that new thing our D is using ... blitz (expecting good things out of dom capers D this year)

Yeah honestly I'm not a fan of Wells. Don't get me wrong he makes VERY little mistakes... but he's not too talented... he just doesn't have much upside and I don't think he'll ever be more than average at best. He's not great in at pass blocking and he's bad at run blocking.

Spitz is an average OG run blocker which is pretty good for C and he's a good pass blocker at both.

Sitton is a GREAT run blocker but last year was bad at pass blocking which he has tons of room to improve.

I hope it's Spitz and Sitton too.

Raji is a 3-4 DE. Heck that is more his natural position anyways. 4-3 UT and one gap 3-4 DE are basically the same position (and Mike McCarthy has said the DE will be playing one gap) (and yes I know two gap 3-4 DEs are asked to keep containment but that's two gap as much in one gap...)

First off Mike McCarthy said Chillar and Barnett basically are the same player as far as talent... and Chillar is better than Bishop. Don't get me wrong I've said since his rookie year he could start on some teams but Chillar is better. Heck Chillar might be better in the 3-4 than Barnett. In the 3-4 your ILB have to be able to stay off blocks... which Barnett has a problem with. Hawk can pop a blocker and get off... I'm not sure how Chillar does it but he seem to be able to stay off blocks better than any of the LBers... he gave the now former Defensive Coordinator of the Rams the credit for him being able to do it.

Even though it is just training camp the new defense seems to be moving along much faster than I expected it too. That would be incredible if they came out strong to start the season.

Martha Careful (10-May) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (10-May) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
Martha Careful (6-May) : Happy 93rd Birthday to the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time...Willie Mays
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Walter Stanely's son
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : and released CB Anthony Johnson and DL Deandre Johnson and waived/injured WR Thyrick Pitts (thigh-rick).
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
