lol, I always kinda get the feeling that Brett decided during the offseason that he wanted to come back and play for Minnesota even before the whole mess and figured since GB drafted 2 QBs they would just release him. But when he came back Ted had enough cap room to call his bluff.

(Just a fun little conspiracy I dreamed up not serious)

I believe in the conspiracy. He wanted to play for Minnesota for along time in my view. I believe ever since the Packers said no which wasn't long after the draft. I think he felt Ted would've been stupid enough to do it, but that of course didn't happen.

I also think he manipulated the system this off-season to go and play for Minnesota.

It's not so much Favre though. I think Bus Cook was kind of the puppet master behind all this. He knows what he's doing. So does Favre, but Cook tries to play like the stupid southern country boy and in reality, he's shrewd. I recall reading about it on something Andrew Brandt wrote.

So yeah I thinkt his has been in the works for about two years now.

I dont know if 2 years is how it was..

But I am pretty sure that last year when he asked to be released is the exact moment he wanted to play for Minny

I agree.

Brett was asked why he was making his decision so early. (remember its been said by many that most players want to hang it up just months after the season was over, even Brett said this), yet Brett retires just after the Super Bowl. Why? He says he did it out of respect for Mike and Eric so they could move forward with their next QB. I think he was 100% truthful and was hoping they would draft a QB high which would almost force them to cut/release Brett so he could play for the Vikings.

"There are several things that went into decision but most importantly, the most important thing, was that physically, you know with my shoulder the last half of the year it hampered the way I played, I'm 39, I had several options [to have surgery] and to let it heal. How that would affect me in terms of playing I had no idea and it wasn't something I was going to risk."

Nice touch to convince the Jets he really is done.

This thread is nothing more than a rehashed version of that tattered argument, "If the man wants to play, let him play. He's earned the right to do what he pleases."

I've been holding in my frustration against this argument -- I heard it on Fox Sports Radio again on Friday -- for a long time now, but I'm finally going to let it out.

"If he wants to play, let him play" vastly understates the seriousness of the NFL. In fact, it downright trivializes it. This isn't Pop Warner football, where coaches are supposed to find a way to get every kid playing time. The NFL isn't a feel-good league; it's a big business, a professional league in which very few people -- only about 1500 at any given time -- are good enough to have the privilege to play, and only a fraction of them ever set foot on the field in a given season.

The NFL is a billion-dollar industry comprising teams with $125 million rosters. Last year Brett Favre made approximately $13 million, and I don't see any way he plays for less than $7 million this year. That is a huge investment just coming off surgery at the age of 39 following a less-than-stellar season and a virtually inactive offseason.

You don't just "let the man play." You have to make damn sure he's the right man for your team and that he'll give you a return on your investment. Anything less is irresponsible at best and career ending at worst.

No matter what the maudlin sentimentalists like to think, no one earns a right to play in the NFL. As with any industry, you remain employed only as long as you bring value to the company, and like it or not, once your usefulness has passed, you are replaced as expeditiously as possible.

Let the man play? No. Let the man earn the chance to play.

interesting

"I foresee getting the impulse to play," Favre told Sports Illustrated's Peter King. "But as good as Mike Tannenbaum has been to me, I could never bring myself to do it. I know I won't do it. If I did, I'd be putting the Jets in a tough spot, because I know they can't release me."

Favre said last week he wouldn't ask for his release.

interesting once again

Favre, 39, who retired in February with a torn biceps tendon in his throwing arm, requested his release "some time ago," GM Mike Tannenbaum said. "He has not indicated any desire to return to football and he remains retired. We wish him the best."

Who are you to say what I would do? No one, so don't do it. Dislike me, fine, but putting words in my mouth/assuming what I would say in a degrading way is uncalled for and should not continue.

I was in Brett's court the whole time during the 'will he wont he' crap that the media generated. Players, including Brett have said that all players consider hanging it up the first few months after the season. Brett speaks whats on his mind, thus, when the media would ask him, he gave them what he was thinking, which is what most players think. The media took this as 'omg is Brett retiring or will he play?'. Personally, as I have said MANY times, Brett was under contract, therefore expect him to show up for camp. Plain and simple! Once he retires, THEN you know.

The media knew they could get a story from Brett and used him. In that sense, Brett WAS the victim because of his honesty and the media took advantage of it. Do you see the media going to any other players non stop asking them about retirement? NO, because most players don't speak what is on their mind!

I don't drag Brett through the mud, I drag the media through the mud because they DESERVE it! Any astute reader could pick up on this from my posts.

I actually believe you're more right than you realize. In fact, I'll take it one step farther and speculate that this contingency plan might have been dreamed up well before Favre even retired.

Zero2Cool (4h) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (6h) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (7h) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (11h) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (11h) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.

Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though

dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
